Demba Ba bags a brace before limping off as Newcastle register their first win since Gameweek 9. Alan Pardew is optimistic over his side’s injury woes, while Wigan are facing a defensive crisis this weekend, with Gary Caldwell and Maynor Figueroa both set to sit out the home clash against QPR due to suspension…

Ba Back On Track
Alan Pardew chose to roll out a 4-3-3 last night but unlike last season, it was Papiss Cisse who moved to the flank, shifted to the right as his compatriot kept the central role up top. Ba repaid his manager’s faith with a deadly double ending a run of four straight defeats for the Magpies and taking his tally to 10 for the season already – with a couple of assists also thrown in, he has played a part on 12 of Newcastle’s 16 goals this season, an incredible contribution. With the maximum FPL bonus also in the bag, he now sits on 90 points – only Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have produced more as forwards.

While Ba’s guaranteed game time and kind 8.2 price tag had looked set to see his current 26% ownership take a rise, he was then forced off with a knock with four minutes left on the clock – Alan Pardew seemed optimistic post-match, however, that the problem is just stiffness, with Ba now afforded a few days before the trip to Fulham next Monday. If he fails to make it for that one, however, Newcastle then have City, United, Arsenal and Everton amongst their following five fixtures – enough to perhaps persuade Fantasy owners to think twice over potential acquisition.

Further Worries for Pardew
With first-team regulars such as Hatem Ben Arfa, Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye already on the sidelines through injury, Alan Pardew has more concerns to consider ahead of the weekend. In addition to Ba’s problem, Cheick Tiote was subbed off at the break after picking up an injury while Davide Santon lasted five minutes of the second-half before limping off with what appeared to be a hip problem. Post-match, though, the Newcastle boss remained confident of their availability…

“I told the players not to take any risks. The three who came off are precautionary – we think all three will make Fulham.”

With little to no room for rest and rotation ahead of the busy festive period – it may well be a case of “if you’re fit, you’ll play” as the Gameweeks come thick and fast over December. Any possible absence for Ba may afford Papiss Cisse a chance to be fielded through the centre in the 4-3-3 that saw him rack up 13 goals in the second half of last season; with a goal and assist over his last two, he may be finally starting to pick up in performance after a hugely disappointing second season on Tyneside.

Suspension Worries for Wigan
Gary Caldwell shook off a hamstring injury to appear for the first time since Gameweek 12 but the Wigan skipper fell foul of the referee and picked up his fifth caution of the season – earning him an automatic one-match ban for Saturday’s visit of basement-dwellers QPR. Roberto Martinez will also be without another defensive regular after Maynor Figueroa received his marching orders for denying Papiss Cisse a goalscoring opportunity – his challenge led to the Magpies first goal, with Ba resultantly slotting home from the spot. With fellow centre-halves Antolin Alcaraz and Ivan Ramis currently injured, Wigan have a real defensive headache on the horizon – Martinez may decide to revert to four at the back at the weekend unless the current situation eases off. According to reports this morning, Wigan are considering an appeal against Figueroa’s dismissal.

Wigan’s Travel Sickness Continues
A clean sheet for the hosts seemed a little unlikely last night, given their recent defensive woes. Newcastle headed into last night’s match have kept out their opponents just once in the first 14 Gameweeks but their visitors’ woeful away form ensured Tim Krul remained unbeaten. The Latics have now scored just twice in their last six road trips, collecting three points – a real worry for Martinez as he looks to steer his side clear of the drop zone.

        I'd prefer Ba at Liverpool

Arsenal, with Dem Ba2, would have too many strikers to try and keep happy: Podolski, Giroud, Walcott, Chamakh... although it doesn't seem that there's any attempt to keep the latter happy!

Is Shorey really so valuable for the DGW with two away matches? It's Reading, this club is hardly one known for clean sheets.

Basically hoping for clean sheets and attacking returns from a defender.

Think the hype is way too big here. right now. At least he is real cheap but do you want to be stuck with Shorey over the next 5 game weeks or so?

He's a good 4th or 5th defender. Anyone on corners for a relegation threatened team is always a chance for an assist off a set piece.

I wouldn't worry about your attack for now. Berba has decent fixtures and Fulham should come good. Your defence is a bit heavy though with 4 players over 5m. Try and reduce two of them, then I'd do Cazorla > Fellaini (a no-brainer really). Then with whatever you save in defence use to upgrade fletcher after the double.

I would downgrade Ivanovic, switch Tevez to Suarez (after this week ofc), keep Berbatov, Caz to Fellaini, and look to switch Fletcher after DGW.

I'm thinking about a punt on A. Johnson for this week (Silva out). Other option is Michu in, but kinda hoping he will get his fifth yellow this weekend. Is Johnson above Michu this week madness?

    2 questions:

    1) If both Silva and Walcott don't play then I can't field 11. Worth a hit to punt on Sess(C)?
    2) Anyone think a massive punt on Ade is worthwhile soon? Stats-wise he scored about 6 goals per 90mins against Arsenal 😉

    Morning all 🙂

Sorry if this has already been discussed a lot (it has, I know :P), but I thought it might be useful for some if I compiled a kind of list of 'nailed-on' players as we approach the festive season. I looked at the potentially desirable players from midfield and attack, the areas that are rotated most, and got the following -

MIDFIELDERS - Michu, Fellaini, Bale, Cazorla, Nolan, Sterling, Yaya, McAnuff, Lallana, Sessegnon

FORWARDS - Suarez, Ba, Fletcher, Lambert, Crouch, Berbatov, Kone, Jelavic

Obviously this list is up for a lot of debate, but it's a rough guideline.

    SJTWP's top tips 😉 -

    - probably not a good idea to have more than two non nailed-on attacking players
    - probably a good idea to have RVP as one of them!
    - don't go near City strikers
    - Chelsea's midfield could be a bit of a mine-field
    - West Brom, Reading, Villa, Chelsea, United and City have rotation-minded managers while Stoke, Sunderland, West Ham, Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle definitely don't.

This is mostly very obvious stuff but I hope it's of use to some anyway!

Taka Yaya out, maybe nailed on (until ACN), but his fantasy returns are very poor.

Also Bale is injured for an unspecified period of time.

Lallana isn't nailed on. RVP isn't in your nailed on list. I would probably add Rooney. No Fletcher? Mata will probably becomed nailed on imho. Why no nailed on defenders list?

Yeah but when Bale's back he's ideal! Always plays and potentially explosive.

Lallana has started every game this season and if I'm not mistaken is captain; I'd say he's pretty nailed on.

I know RVP is not in my list, I was saying it's a good idea to have him anyway

        Fletcher is on my list!

I did say, defenders are less rotated, there'd be masses of them, and frankly, I can't be arsed.

I'd go as far to say that Defoe is looking pretty nailed-on at the moment

At this moment in time I'd value Rooney's services over RVP's, espescially with Roo on penalties which Man Ure get surplus of.

Five injuries is a bit tough. Would think Crouch would be back this week, hasn't he only lost a few teeth? Gorkkss + Sagna > Shorey + Gardner for DGW, gets you enough men playing and even if for a hit should guarantee this back, then look to shift Gardner next week? Kanaklic is apparently due back for Newcastle game too...
