Our weekly look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game swings into action again this afternoon. As always, we assess the top five teams in the Scout League and cast an eye over the frenzied activity in the transfer market ahead of Saturday morning’s deadline:

Scout League Standings

Iyad Zahlan retains his spot at the top of the Scout League after a 69 point haul in Gameweek 16. He loaded up on three Sunderland players for the double Gameweek, with Carlos Cuellar, Steven Fletcher and captain Stephane Sessegnon producing 38 points between them. Michu, Asmir Begovic, Santi Cazorla and Robin Van Persie were also amongst the points as Iyad moved to 1,022 points – third in the overall rankings.

In second place sits El Tri, another non-mover. He chose to overlook the double Gameweek and picked up 52 points, with captain Cazorla, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Begovic and Ryan Shawcross all picking up points. With 993 points, he’s some way behind Iyad, though is 29th overall.

Next up is MP in third position after an 86 point return in Gameweek 16. He also captained Sessegnon and had Cuellar in his defensive ranks, while Jason Puncheon, Michu, Cazorla, Tevez, Van Persie and Begovic all boosted his tally. On 990 points overall, he sits in 37th spot and still has a wildcard in hand.

T.I. slipped down to fourth in the Scout League after a Gameweek 16 score of 59 points. While captain Sessegnon and Cuellar combined for 31 points, only two other players – Cazorla and Van Persie – managed to pick up the points. T.I remains inside the top 50 on 988 points and is another of our main protagonists to have kept their wildcard.

David Jones completes the top five. He produced 63 points despite captain Dimitar Berbatov’s failure to notch against Newcastle – Michu, Rooney, Raheem Sterling, Begovic, Nathaniel Clyne and Thomas Vermaelen all boosted his tally to 988 points overall.

Our top five performers have ensured Fantasy Football Scout remains top of the Best Leagues – an average of 996.2 points is 11.2 ahead of our nearest challenger. Finally, Facer remains top of the Contributors League; he picked up 61 points last time round thanks to the likes of Juan Mata, Michu, Cuellar, Begovic and Van Persie.

Market Trends

Three goals in his last four games have made Seb Bassong this week’s most wanted FPL player. Over 84,000 have transferred in the Norwich centre-half, with his price leaping from 4.7 to 5.0, though he faces a tough run of fixtures after this weekend’s home clash with Wigan.

Michu continues to pick up huge numbers of investors. Another double in last week’s defeat by Norwich has persuaded 67,000 to snap up the Swansea man – he is now up to 8.0 from his original price of 6.5 and is the most popular player in the game, with over 46% ownership. Stoke’s eight clean sheet of the campaign has earned Asmir Begovic and Ryan Shawcross a combined 76,000 new owners, while Geoff Cameron (12,000) and Robert Huth (8,000) have also been subject to plenty trades in.

Elsewhere at the back, Glen Johnson and Rafael have earned 15,000 new owners apiece after producing attacking returns last weekend – the right-backs also have favourable fixtures on the horizon to further their appeal.

Robert Snodgrass’ second double figure haul in the last three weeks has helped him accrue 42,000 new owners heading into a home showdown with Wigan, while Marouane Fellaini continues to climb in ownership. Over 36,000 have snapped up the Belgian this week – he is second most popular FPL pick and currently resides in over 43% of teams.

Santi Cazorla has also picked up in ownership, with over 25,000 Fantasy managers drafting in the Spaniard ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Reading next Monday. Despite both Chelsea and Southampton facing blanks this weekend, Jason Puncheon (15,000) and Juan Mata (12,000) have also proven popular after finding the net in Gameweek 16.

Up top, Luis Suarez has been drafted in by over 44,000 after serving his one-match suspension at West Ham. Back-to-back braces have persuaded 43,000 to invest in Wayne Rooney as Sunderland roll up to Old Trafford, while Jermain Defoe has received 39,000 transfers in as Spurs prepare to welcome Swansea to the Lane. Both Fernando Torres and Carlos Tevez have acquired 20,000 new owners – Torres will be parked on the bench until Gameweek 18, then, with no fixture this time round.

In terms of transfers out, Eden Hazard leads the way. Over 50,000 have sold on the Belgian – his weekend blank no doubt plays a part but one goal since Gameweek 7 is indicative of his fall from favour. The Chelsea exodus has already affected Branislav Ivanovic (34,000), Juan Mata (25,000) and Ashley Cole (20,000), while Southampton’s blank has seen significant sales of Rickie Lambert, with 19,000 moving on the 6.1 priced forward.

Sunderland pair Stephane Sessegnon and Steven Fletcher are quickly being dispensed with after the Black Cats’ double Gameweek – while 17,000 have shipped off Sessegnon, Fletcher has departed from 34,000 teams, substantially more than any other forward.

With doubts remaining over his availability this weekend, Gareth Bale continues to fall in ownership. So far, 39,000 have parted company with the Spurs man – he is down to 9.6, with just 14% ownership.

Considering Enrique / A Hughes / Jaask to Nastasic / Mertesacker / De Gea over the next few weeks.

I think Man Utd's defence will improve with the return of Vidic and it should bolster my overall defence.

I would welcome your thoughts on this.

    Cheers.

Out of all the bandwagons I really don't get the GJ one to this extent.

He's never been consistent in actually scoring. In his career he's never scored more than 3 goals in one season.

    2011/12 - 1 goal 1 assist
    2010/11 - 2 goals 2 assists
    2009/10 - 3 goals 5 assists

I'd be very surprised if he scored more than 2 goals this season.

That is unless you're picking him for a clean sheet in which case I'd suggest Skrtel.

GJ is a far better option than Skrtel imo. If you say him against WHM then you would know why.

Every time i've played him he's got me double figures. Just twice, but still, you can't deny that he looks better than he has been in the past. He is growing in confidence and ability and the Liverpool defence is quite decent as well.

If you're ever going to have him arguably these next few fixtures are the time, I wouldn't expect him to score again though.

He's had his moments over the course of a month or so and I suppose people remember that.

I have Skrtel for his clean sheets, his parsimony in vowels and the intimidating tatooed look he gives to my team.

Factor in the Rodgers effect this season, with Lucas dropping into the back 3 when they attack both wing-backs have the freedom to get forward. That is why he is in demand.

Got to say my eyes do glaze over a bit when I hear chat about how player ownership should affect your decisions, how you should own someone because they're a differential and no one has them, or you shouldn't own someone because everyone has them. If someone's a differential you both benefit more if they succeed and are punished more if they don't. Far beyond that, the only objective of the game is to pick the players with the most points. It doesn't matter if 50% of people own them or 1%, that is the only way to win.

I ignored the fellaini and michu ownership and got them in late a few weeks ago and frankly they saved me. I may get rid in the foreseeable future if a heavy hitter materializes while they falter. But neither decision will be influenced by ownership - just points potential.

    Just my two alcohol-soaked cents.

      ^^this^^^

The real key is to find a differential at the right time, that is pick them when then they hit form. But rejecting a player because 'everyone has them' is madness.

Seeking a differential to player x because you can't afford player x is one thing, doing it for the sake of it is another, I have learnt this the hard way this season

I agree, although if you're deciding between two players you think will get similar points, i think you should get the guy with lower ownership. It's the more aggressive option and less safe, but i think the risk is worth it. Obviously choosing the higher ownership guy will keep you safe from missed explosions.

This is the key. It's kind of like playing the lottery. The numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 have exactly the same chance of coming in as any other set of 6 numbers, but because lots of people pick them your reward would be much lower.

          Agree on both, good example.

All other things being equal I like to live a little.

If I had to choose between Silva and Cazorla I would classify their points potential as similar - certainly recent history suggests that. But Silva would be the one I'd go for.

There is a difference between 'not choosing' a player and seeking a quality differential. The latter is what will get you the high rank.

Yep, you're right. If we were to apply that I might say Tevez had been incredibly popular but there were plenty of attractive differentials and many paid off. Again, the rotation really harmed Tevez points potential going forward - it wasn't ownership that counted against him.

your history for the last two years really does do the talking there. Of course, what we see as the template is always changing, so to have the template team shows some degree of discernment.

Good captain choices, and never taking hits is key in my opinion. They have hardly ever payed off for me, and thats what has screwed my season up this year so far.

I will confess to being happy to take calculated hits, once I work out the upside and downside after transfer cost and assign some probabilities to them. But have to set the bar pretty high. Been both burnt and boosted by them this year - overall a small net gain I think.

The best ones are when you can't field 11. Very little downside. Last week Bale and Walcott went for Sess and Michu, hit. This week I'm on 9 or 10 players and happy to take a calculated hit.

The thing is, if you've already got a decent rank, you don't take hits because your team is performing well, not the other way around.

When you're doing badly, you feel the need to take hits and improve.

Another important point is that combinations of players provide differential also. If you own 3 players at 30% each, a very small % of teams will own all 3 (you do the calculation 😆 ). Taken to the extreme is the fact that your team is likely unique and therefore a differential - placing all your 'differential power' into a single player is mis-placed.

Interesting point, extending further, the squad of 15 you have is likely to be very little owned and hence worries of identicality are misplaced.

Last year Bale+VDV was doing amazing stuff for me and that ought to have been a differential, again, they just looked like the best two options.

To me it all points to choosing your best 15, regardless of who other people own - differential is inherent in your selection being different to everyone else's.

I got 82 points this past GW. Here are my ownership figures:

          4.8%
          5.6% 4.4% 3.7%
          20.3% 43.6% 46.6% 3.9%
          40.1%(c) 37.5% 25.2%

Pretty mainstream team, but I've gone up 45k places, and my GW rank is 33,458 which is in the top 1.5% of scores this week.

I hear you, Isacki. Don't be a sheep and don't be different(ial) just for the sake of it. Focus on who's going to score the most FPL points first and foremost.

Ownership is a factor. If there's a very popular player you don't own it will be much more damaging when they do well than when you miss out on James McClean.

Similar to Isacki's point about ignoring ownership, what do people think about picking players who are facing each other in a given gameweek. Especially attackers vs defenders?

I tend to think you should ignore this as a factor. There are always scenarios where both could score, you're hedging your bets to an extent, whereas not playing a defender because you're playing a striker who's up against him will probably come back to haunt you when your striker draws a blank and your defender's clean sheet is stuck on the bench.

In any given match it is most likely that both teams will score. I always ignore teams playing each other as a factor. If a defensive player keeps a clean sheet you are more or less breaking even and it softens the blow of your attacking player not producing returns. This seems to have faired me well

Its always wise to spread the points out over as many games as possible but inevitably you will have a GW where players in your team face each other, in that case i usually punt on the attacking player myself. Or hope for a 0-0 if its defenders i have. 😉

Actually that reminds me of one of my most prophetic posts ever, when someone said should I play keeper X and defender Y playing against them, and I said "you never know, X might save a penalty and then Y might score an injury time header" and it happened just like I said.

You had to be there, man.

It depends on many fantasy factors. I usually assess the case by players' form and the history between the two teams and then try to work things out and see if it's a good decision to play them both at the same time in a given week.

Davies - Swansea. tricky fixtures for a while and sometimes bench fodder, but solid, Swansea are tight at the back. He is about to rise to 4.1

Torres has scored 5 in 3 games, the first time he's ever scored 3 games in a row for Chelsea. And Mata scored again too.

I'm considering Mata and Torres. Mata has more goal threat than Silva and Torres is less of a rotation risk than Tevez.

I don't think i can risk Sterling and Enrique don't start. It will leave me with 9 players this GW. Sterling and Enrique out > Silva and Hughes in for -8 hit good move? Would leave me money to do Sess > Fellaini next GW.

Well at least wait until tomorrow or as far as possible into Saturday , the Liverpool lineup has been posted quite early in recent weeks, would be silly to take a hit for nothing.
