Our final look at Gameweek 17 earns a tip of the hat for Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, while Villa’s thriving form and the midfield fallout from the Marouane Fellaini ban both feature in our thoughts…

The Player

Prior to last night’s win at Reading, Santi Cazorla had produced a single assist in his previous four matches. With the Gunners’ morale rock-bottom after a Capital One Cup exit at the hands of Bradford, confidence in their ability to produce had taken a real dent but a sensational 23 point haul propelled the former Malaga man up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and onto many a radar.

There’s no doubt he can be a frustrating Fantasy player at times – he has nine blanks over the first 17 Gameweeks but with seven goals and six assists, Cazorla’s role in “the hole” at Arsenal means he’s more than capable of overshadowing the most prolific of forwards over the course of the campaign. Only Robin Van Persie and Michu have returned more points than the little maestro – a clear sign of his importance in a stunning debut season, yet heading into last night’s match, only one of the top five FPL managers had him in their side. As a result, that manager – Iyad Zahlan – has returned to the top of the standings.

With a trip to Wigan up next, Cazorla seems primed for points. The Latics have conceded at least twice in each of their last seven and their patched-up three-man backline could be swept aside by Arsenal’s pace up top, bringing Theo Walcott into our thoughts. Handed a first start through the middle, Walcott’s goal vindicated Arsene Wenger’s decision to select him at the expense of Olivier Giroud but with doubts remaining over the Gunners’ Boxing Day match with West Ham due to the tube strike, the pair could yet be facing a blank Gameweek 19. While that’s enough to deter most from investing, the prospect of another away rout would more than make up for any potential blank, should Arsenal decide to call their game against the Hammers off. A decision from the club is expected later today and is likely to influence many Fantasy managers’ tactics heading into the weekend deadline.

The Team

Back-to-back defeats against both Manchester clubs in Gameweeks 11 and 12 seem to have been the making of Aston Villa. Paul Lambert’s side have licked their wounds after shipping eight goals over that pair of matches and last weekend the midlands outfit stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a sensational victory at Liverpool.

Over those five matches, Villa have produced three clean sheets, conceding just twice – despite the fact that summer signing Ron Vlaar has been sidelined at the back for all but 50 minutes of that run. In defence, Matthew Lowton and Ciaran Clark have climbed to 56 and 51 FPL points respectively as Villa begin to offer us real cut-price alternatives at the back, with Lowton’s move to the right of a five-man midfield affording him an out of position berth of late.

Indeed, it has been Lambert’s switch to a 3-5-2 that seems to have bolstered Villa’s ability to rack up the goals. They put four past Norwich in the midweek Capital One Cup match to end the Canaries’ long unbeaten run, while the 3-1 Anfield win was Liverpool’s first home loss since Gameweek 5 and was the first time this term Villa have scored more than twice in the league.

Once again, Christian Benteke proved pivotal to their fortunes. Two goals and an assist returned a 15 point haul and highlighted his importance to the Villa cause – since making his debut in Gameweek 4, he has played a part in eight of his side’s 13 goals, with five strikes and a trio of assists. Coming in at 6.6 in FPL, he faces a tricky trip to Chelsea but with three home games in the following four, the Belgian has the fixtures and stunning form to suggest he could be a real contender over the Christmas period. As Villa go from strength to strength and belatedly settle under their new manager, they are beginning to appeal further with every passing game – Clark’s 2.5% ownership is the highest of any outfield player amongst Lambert’s side; an indication of their differential worth right now.

The Talking Point

The madness of Marouane Fellaini in Everton’s draw at Stoke has already had severe repercussions. As the Belgian’s three-match ban sinks in, Fantasy managers have been quick to react, with over 156,000 in the FPL game selling him on so far. With Fellaini set to miss games against West Ham, Wigan and Chelsea, the frantic scramble to replace the second most popular FPL player over the festive period has led many to acquire the similarly priced Yaya Toure – the Ivorian has notched in back-to-back Gameweeks and now welcomes Reading to the Etihad this Saturday afternoon.

With alternatives such as Michu, Kevin Nolan, Gareth Bale and Adel Taarabt all sitting on four yellows apiece, just one booking away from an automatic one-match ban, a transfer in for any of that quartet doesn’t come without risk. Some are opting for a points hit in order to acquire premium priced options such as Cazorla, David Silva or Juan Mata – with strong fixtures to follow, the trio of Spanish playmakers all seem primed for points and have picked up in ownership as a result of Fellaini’s indiscretion.

Fellaini’s price is set to plummet over the next fortnight as substantial sales continue to snowball, though with the festive schedule picking up pace, the Everton man will be available in just over a fortnight’s time – a trip to Newcastle on January 2. In the meantime, his absence will at least break up the template midfields doing the rounds and allow us to freshen up our squads ahead of the winter wildcards starting in Gameweek 22. We’ll have more on this hot topic later today, with a “Fellaini Exit Route” feature set to follow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How do i squeeze Sterling (FUL) into this week's team?

    Foster (NOR)
Gibbs (wig) | Davies (MUN) | Enrique (FUL)
Santi (wig) | Silva (RDG) | Michu (SWA) | Puncheon (SUN)
Defoe (STK) | RVP (swa) | Suarez (FUL)

Captain and vice captain votes would be useful as well.

anyone planning to get Bale over Silva this week?

Tott's fixtures look too good to ignore him surely?

I have Silva and I'm looking at Bale or Mata. Rather Bale, but he'll need to be 100% confirmed fit before i pull the trigger. Bale's the 2nd player after RVP I always want in my team.

Yea it's going to be really useful in that the board will become effectively self moderating, but I was thinking the other day that actually the current crop of regular posters are by and large really nice, and knowledgable and friendly. I hear a lot of "oh it was so much better back in the day" but I think it's probably just human nature to exalt the past and the future at the expense of the present, I'm sure in a year or two the regulars who are still here then will look fondly back at the board as it is now.

I agree that would be a bad thing, but I'm sure Mark's thought it all through. I really don't know a huge amount about it but the impression I get is that the reputation system is effectively invisible - and if there is collusion and abuse it'll be very obvious. Plus since it's bespoke we can tweak it as we go.

Tevez's underlying stats are much better, even over the last 6 where Aguero has played more, but thats the thing...Aguero will play more.

    Enrique, ShawX, Demel
    Cazorla, McAnuff, Michu, Bale
    RVP (VC), Suarez, Ba (C)

    Federici, Nelsen, Clark, Fellaini

Obviously want to get rid of Fellaini so I don't have to play McAnuff, thinking of a West Brom player. My main ML rival has Morrison but I want Brunt #explosionimminent I've seen a few people on here saying that Brunt is a very frustrating player to own. Also has he been injured recently?

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE
    1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitch-hiking .
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.
We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......
    WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video/DVD, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits/legal from these accidents .
We played with worms(well most boys did) and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!
And if YOU are one of them!
    CONGRATULATIONS!

share it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!
PS -The BIG type is because your eyes are shot at your age!

We used to play demolition derby with our bikes.
My dad bought me a 2 pair of 6oz boxing gloves when I was 8.
      What fun
Once when swimming on an Atlantic Florida Vacation I was grabbed by the riptide and dragged across the bottom 1/2 a mile out to sea. No big deal, cut up I swam back in and had lunch.

I think Pilko works better as an 'every week' player. His price is more of a 4th mid price. I'm thinking of doing Sterling > Pilkington in a few weeks. I opted for Puncheon based on value and it allows me to have a new 5th mid once I ship Sterling.

Puncheon works as a 5th mid at that price but offers a huge amount of upside and should probably be worth 6m+

Pilkington is 5.7m and definitely cheaper than he should be. He's a forward playing winger if I recall and although Norwich's fixtures are tough he has 3 home games in 4 to do something. I think he's very much a bargain too and I think he could improve on last year's eight goals.

Well, that is interesting I must say. And not having the stats to hand makes it hard for me to come to any conclusions. But Snod's set pieces and better creativity would immediately stick out to me as reasons why he could be a better choice.

What I would say in praise of Pilks though is he has more of a striker's instinct about him. A bit more of a Kevin Nolan about him...from what I've seen. He seems to be in the right places at the right times. So maybe less assist potential but stronger in the goals department potentially?

According to the stats, more of both. More shots, more in the box, more chances created. And all by significant margins.

But heed my warning: zig when I zag

This is my exact conundrum, who to get for Fellaini! Its between Snod, Pilk and Punch! Norwich for being slightly better and nice FA Cup fixtures, Punch cause he is v cheap and would give me money to burn in January!

Can't reply to your post for some reason ... weird.

I play TFF so it is a starting 11 and no subs. So they would need to play every week! Fellaini replacement needs to be budget, as Fellaini is budget and prices do not change in TFF. So choices have been between the above three, and also considered Pienaar.

Better to say- I was hoping to bring in Gibbs for Riise as he has tough fixtures coming up and selling Riise would free up some more cash.
With Gibbs a doubt for the Stephens day clash what are other options... for my defence

But Riise doesn't have tough fixtures coming up. Fulham probably have the best fixture list outside of the top clubs. Gibbs is a good option but seems a waste of a transfer. And Im not sure the Boxing Day game will get called off anyway. Tube strikes are often averted close to the time.

Which goalie has the best fixtures right now+rotate with Bego? I've got Howard since GW5 but he's a goner. No CS since god knows when.

If both stay fit and are nailed on, whose the better fantasy prospect? and why?

I think it might be similar to Hazard (Walcott) and Mata (Carzola) but then again I'm sure I'm wrong....

Cazorla looked a different player to what he was the past month and a bit bt whether that is down to a decent enough rest (no midweek games for 2 weeks), Walcott being up front or Reading being Reading remains to he seen. Walcotts assists/goals per minute in all competitions this season is excellent and at 1M + cheaper I am going to go for him after the probable postponement.

Has to be Theo, especially if he continues upfront every other game or so. 1m price difference is a lot too. Cazorla will continue to do well but I doubt he will score too often. Its assists vs. goals in the long term.

Lets not forget that last night was against Reading too. Not many teams would concede a headed goal by Cazorla.

Indeed. All 3 of his goals were Christmas gifts from the Reading defence. Although he could have had more points too.

After last night i would have said Theo.

However, yesterdays match was the first time we saw Caz really pressing the box and attacking with regularity. If Wenger gives him this license, he could be best prospect in the game. If it continues, i might shift my thinking to Caz. Wait one more game to decide.

imo....Theo's Oop will not last with any regularity.

Theo as long as he continues to play in attack 🙂
The 1.1m saved is also appealing to ones budget.

Most would have said Theo because of his position but Cazorla seemed to be given a freer role last night and if that happens more often than not then I think he could be scarily good as an FPL player.

I know Reading are really poor but Cazorla's performance last night was simply breathtaking...I'm lost for words 🙂
