Gameweek 18 saw the last sixteen in the Paddy Power Cup go head-to-head, with a place in the Quarter-Finals and the inaugural Fanatsy Football Scout shield at stake. The results saw the top ranked player again make ominous progress, while notable names from the community also found safe passage…

Iyad Zahlan’s “Giavara555” saw off the plucky challenge of legriff to make it into the last eight to become the name that everyone wants to avoid in the draw. He’ll be joined by JMS, placed just 29 places behind him in the overall FPL rankings – another name the rest of the pack will hope to skip in next round. That heavy-hitting pair are joined by ange1range1, Wild Rover, MileHigh, Mr.KK, Ricky smokes let’s go and Tommy Tynan’s left shin pad in the last eight. All those teams now qualify for the draw for the Shield tournament, where they will be facing the final eight in the Members Cup which starts early next year.

The full results from the last sixteen are below with the draw for the Quarter-Finals due on Thursday, ahead of Gameweek 20. Tomorrow’s Gameweek gives our remaining cup participants a brief rest period, then, before the last eight do battle in the matches played out in Gameweek 20 over the December 29 and 30 matches.

Congrats to our last sixteen winners.

If he finds the form he did before he broke his leg, he'll be a very impressive signing. It's sad to see this happen to players though as they very rarely become the same player or go on to better things following an injury like that one, particularly strikers.

He has been Spain's main man for the last 5 years or so and was prolific at Valencia. One of my favourite forwards a couple of years back at the World Cup 2010.

    Begovic
    Nelsen, Davies, Zabaleta
    Mata, Silva, Michu, Puncheon
    Tevez, RVP, Suarez
    :: Foster, Maloney, Shorey, Sagna

Would you say this team would be improved by ditching Maloney and Tevez for Bale and Berbatov? Puncheon would drop to the bench. Really feel I'm down on my knees if I see any kind of rotation for my boys.

Puncheon at least gives you assured starts and good form. Berbatov is the old fixtures vs form debate, he could quite easily score 2 points tomorrow and I expect Villa Spurs to be a lot tighter than most expect. So personally I wouldn't do that transfer.

Anybody have the latest on Rafael's chances of playing tomorrow?

1 FT and have no goalkeeper (jussi and szczesny) as well as 2 doubtfuls in defence - rafael and demel.. tempted to keep my team as it is but not sure.

I got Raphael out last week, mainly as a doubt for this GW too but maybe rotation as well. If you have Davis who will play for sure each week you could hang on as he will still get some good scores in the New Year I think. Maybe go for an Spurs one if not.

Don't spend transfer on keeper, are you on Yellow card watch for a few players? You know you'll probably need 2 transfers soon.

I think i'm going with Michu for captain.

    Reasons:
    a) RVP could be dropped
    b) Hernandez could replace Rooney, so RVP would drop deeper.
    c) I don't have a reason c, i'm just trying to convince myself its a good idea.

I like your thinking and I definitely think Michu will play whilst RVP 'may' be rested. I think that's a critical factor in my decision.

It's one of Berbatov, van Persie and Michu for me. If RVP plays I fancy him to outscore the others, but it's that question mark by Ferguson that is nagging me.

A question... How do other players find their overall rank fluctuate over the course of a season? This is my 4th season and as I recall, I generally start the season quite poorly and then really seem to climb the rankings from January onwards.

I was wondering if other players find something similar? Is this just down to chance or do other factors come into play? I'm thinking about team value, other players dropping off, serious players making greater (relative) scores as they hone their team over the course of a season etc.

That's always how it has happened for me, starting off slowly... but in the past few seasons I would have already started climbing and would have been around 50-100k by this point...

This season is a little more worrying, since I haven't started climbing yet... 😕

I remain hopeful that I'm going to climb as I have done in the past. I don't think that I've ever been as high in the rankings at Christmas as I am now (inside top 100k).

While I've always obsessed over the fpl site, this is the first year I've looked at any outside opinions (on this site) and I'm hoping it's helped in some way.

with united's full compliment of defenders otherwise fit, fergie wont rush rafael back ahead of schedule. With games coming thick and fast, it prob means he wont play against newcastle, esp as Jones has played quite well in his absence. Havent heard any official line yet tho.. His value may continue to drop so may be wise to sell now.

Valencia was taken off at 60 mins last game. Surely guaranteed a start? Kagawa or Welbeck can play out on the left for Young who has played every minute of the last 4 games, coming back from injury. Just a thought

    Sterling -> puncheon / gera ?
I think his price has got to a max and its time to cash in (bought at 4.5 or 4.6), he doesn't really get a big part of liverpool points so he won't be missed to much.

other cheapie is Maloney, could offload him too.

Don't have any other offensive cover from those teams.
They all have 3 away in next 4, would personaly say wba has the best fixtures but gera is not so secure as the rest.

Nice work on the new hall of fame feature, Mark.

I must admit it wouldn’t be useful for those, like me, who have technically ‘played’ a season but didn’t bother with it after a certain time and thus led a ghost ship for the majority of that season. I am referring to last season where for unforeseen circumstances I missed a couple of weeks and hence ‘gave up’.

As a result, I came in at 700,000th+ which would have a big impact on my overall HOF ranking. It’s just one of those things I guess, but had that been ‘N/A’ year, I would have got a slightly greater score given the performances in my other two active seasons (17,000th and 21,000th respectively).

I’d probably suggest requesting that year to go down as ‘N/A’, but then where do you draw the line? i.e. you may then get lots of people claiming the same thing when in fact they just did shit.

The awful truth is that someone *should* score higher than you, for not "giving up" ... it might not mean they're a better manager than you -- but it certainly means they're a better FPL manager than you.

And I say this as someone who's thrown rank away several seasons when just playing for my ML.

I suppose you're right, as a ridiculously competitive person, I'm just conscious that my HoF ranking wouldn't do me justice because last season's performance would knock it down. Certainly, a 'N/A' score would probably represent my season better, since I didn't technically play it - but as I did theoretically - I'm getting a worse ranking than I would do if I hadn't even started the season at all.

The question being, if I hadn't started the season at all, is that better than starting it and stopping at some point throughout, eventually nose-diving to 710,000th or whatever it was? I would argue it's the same.

Good point(s), but - my immediate thought is that - a season ranked lower than half, or three-quarters should about equal a non-season in the algorithm, imo. Otherwise, 1st timers last year who did well would be disproportionally better ranked than 6-year veterans.

But I always do to remember that rank isn't the end-all, be-all of "good" ... I think I'm far better than my rank(s) suggest, so it must be true 😉

Evening guys. Didn't get any advice earlier, I'll see if anyone who is still awake and preferably sober can help!

    Bego (McCarthy)

    Rafael, GJ, Shorey (Clyne, Cuellar)

    Mata, Silva, Michu, Taraabt (Sterling)

    RVP (c), Berbs (vc), Suarez

1 FT and 0.4 in the bank. Can I get away with saving my transfer or is that defence praying that Rafa and Shorey start?

No reason, he'd be a good captain choice IF he starts. If he doesn't you're either relying on them needing him at some point and him coming on for the final 'attacking' 30 minutes or hoping that he doesn't come on for a cameo for 1 point.

I wouldn't risk it personally, the gain isn't worth it for me.

sess has hard short term fixtures but are at home, he is getting in good, positions and sunderland are improving slightly. Sunderland's fixtures then turn great in a few weeks from now if he gets thru the next few games with a few points..Morrison is good but has been played deeper and not returning like he can. Selling sess will give you more money to spend but there are not many alternative at that price bracket

I think Lukaku is a far better player than Long - I don't know why Clarke doesn't start him more often. I'd expect to see him ripping s*** up at Chelsea in the latter half of the season. Incredibly strong, skillful and an awesome finisher. Easily one of the best strikers in the league.

Really not sure what to do, as hes been rubbish recently and has barely played, plus Lukaku is way better, the sooner Clarke realises that the sooner I bring him in

Keep Santi (and play sterling at stoke) or sell for Mata for free ?

I'd keep Santi, he'll be useful in coming weeks. I have Mata though, I'm quite happy with that for now (i.e. until the DGW where I will reassess)

GW20 - GW22, Mata has eve, QPR, sto. I'm thinking getting him out for Santi before the QPR game could be a good plan, as I know which game I'd rest him for.

Evening guys & a belated Merry Christmas to all.

I have a bit of a nightmare... Chesney & Jussi as my keepers. Also have Caz so planning Caz > Bale as my FT to try and maximise attacking points. Should I take the hit to bring in a replacement GK?

See Schwarzer as a good option given strong home fixtures coming up, also rotates well with Jussi until Jan WC.

    any thoughts appreciated!

Michu...., i think 🙂 He is the highest scorer in the game and they are playing the worst team in the league.
