Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Trying to decide if he is worth more. Looks better getting forward tbh and his attacking returns have been nicer of late. The £0.3 difference isn't much for my budget so i'm happy paying extra if I can convince myself he is going to get me more points.

Could be a cheeky punt if Rooney is indeed out for 2-3 weeks. Especially with the WC just around the corner. Think I could play with RVP plus two cheapie strikers until then and have 5 big mids across the middle in Mata - Bale - Silva - Walcott - Fellaini

Aren't you going to want Michu as one if them ?

But I've decided the same thing basically... 3-5-2 with Mata, Bale, Cazorla, Michu, Fellaini as the midfield.

RVP Suarez and a cheap striker like Ruiz up front.

RVP makes this game so much less creative and skilful. Just sticking the captaincy on him every week takes so much of the decision making out of the equation.

But a poster called JK a few pages back has convinced me he's essential, so....

Sterling + Rooney >> dirt cheap mid + RVP in

    Feels like defeat 🙁

It kinda is defeat, isn't it, admitting it was obvious that RvP would be a major player from GW1 but you didn't see it. Also it's nothing new. RvP was more or less must have last season and before that there was Ronaldo and once upon a time it was Lamps & Gerrard.

@Granville...Zaba doesn't free up any funds for me which is ideal for me. And there's no Maicon worries if I go Nastasic. I know he's more attacking but if Nasty saves me from a few 'WHERE'S ZABALETA?' on Saturdays would it not be worth it?

Rumors of Maicon wanting out; could be sold immediately in January.

Richards will be back late Feb.

Mancini and Marwood continuously talk up Zabaleta.

Yeah, I know he's brilliant. But Nastasic doesn't seem like he's going to be rotated as things stand. If I did Zaba it wouldn't give me any extra cash which I feel I need for other issues. I would prefer a bit of a downgrade...even if it's only a little.

Zaba's attacking threat is also a little overrated...I know he joins the attack but he averages about a goal and an assist a year at City. And he's already got that goal and assist.

You might also say that he's a poor finisher which might change, or he might get lucky. He gets into loads of good positions, always a chance to luck out then.

Nastasic is most in danger of missing the next game IMO with one of Kolo and Lescott coming in.

Gareth Barry scores the winner last week and he's rewarded with a place on the bench. No one is safe.

He started Toure right back today with Lescott used as a striker for the 2 mins he was on the field. It sounds like Lescott is completely out of favour. With Clichy out and with Toure playing the entire game today...do you really think Nastasic would be dropped for the next game?

Under Mancini's rotation rota he is due. It's just a theory.

Sorry to hijack your post but I reckon Spurs should recall Danny Rose, he's been immense this season. Only issue is his height which means he could be vulnerable at the back stick, but with giants like Cuellar and O'shea around him he's grand.

    Rafa > Davies, Harte
    This week

    Shorey > Sanga/Gibbs
    Next week

Can also afford Luiz for Rafa if that's a good option but he won't be scoring much and Chelsea's run will end soon

    Thoughts? Team linked.

Yep, Berb has nice fixtures and nicer t-shirts. Try Cuellar to O'Brien for DGW or Shorey to other cheap defender who won't play?

Keep Enrique for QPR (away) or get Gibbs (NEW at home) before a 0.1 price rise?

Want Gibbs for the coming fixtures anyway.
