[sbu_large_image] The Stock Check

Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any better options in the 8m bracket?

same story here. Thinking either Ba (helped me a lot a month ago) or Torres (if you can downgrade someone else).

Imo, below 8.4 only fletcher is worthy. Berba sucks and benteke plays for a very weak side.

far from a totttenham fan, but disagree completely with the above. Has been itching to give Dawson the armband and now has it. if he loved gallas duff, he would have played today! 2 day backup show that dawson is first choice right centre half going forward

Dawson has been captain all season and it hasn't made much difference. Gallas has played a few times over Dawson when both have been fit. And he's not first choice, Caulker will play lots and rightly so because he's immense.

Gallas is also our captain (go figure).

Not sure why Dawson hasn't been playing, but if I have it my way, Dawson will be nailed on and Gallas shipped of down the Thames, where he can cause calamities at Loftus instead. They can also match his wage.

      The ODD Check?!

      ON THE UP

      David Silva

The assist for Aguero’s penalty took Silva to four in his last five starts with three bonus points. He was also subbed off at 55 minutes away to Norwich. Snap him up whilst he's still HOT!

      GOING DOWN

      Theo Walcott

The assist for Puncheon’s own goal took Walcott to four goals, four assists & six bonus in his last four starts. He has produced the highest score of any Arsenal player for the second game in a row, has set pieces in his locker & is playing OOP. Avoid like the plague! Wouldn't touch with a barge-pole.

It doesn't try to predict how many points a player WILL get each game because a player can never get 4.5 points for example. It predicts how many points a player would get on average if we could imagine the game being played 1000s of times. This includes the chance that a player won't play in some matches, which often makes the numbers seem lower than people intuitively think.

In fact RvP is predicted 6.2 for gw 24, which makes him the best captaincy choice for that week. Here's a nice illustration of what the we mean by an average or expected score): if we imagine the game being played 10 times, he could well get 12 points or 2 points or 1 point or 6 points or 10 points or 5 points or 0 points or 7 points or 2 points or 17 points. In other words an average of 6.2 points. Obviously the maths behind the numbers is more systematic than this but this example will hopefully give you a better understanding of what the numbers 'mean'.

No, I think there are many regular players who don't own him. They missed the boat and he's a bugger to get in at his price now so they make do with rotation-risk City strikers or cheaper alternatives like Berbs, Ba, Rooney, etc. You can get away with it for a while but not having RVP in the long run will kill your chances of moving up the rankings. He's a beast!

Missed out on yet more points through not captaining RVP, when will I learn.
