A superb second-half comeback from Southampton stuns Stamford Bridge and denies Rafa Benitez a much-needed home win. Demba Ba notches a first league goal for the Blues, while strikes for Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon ensure that Gameweek 22’s double was a profitable one. With the FA Cup replays covered in the Scout Notes to follow, here’s the Stock Check on tonight’s league action…

On the Up

Demba Ba
The talk before the game was that the Senegalese striker was unlikely to start two matches in the space of four days but, by naming him in the lineup ahead of Fernando Torres, there is perhaps already a pecking order forming. Ba duly took just 25 minutes to again show his quality with a first league strike for his new club. Ba owners will, however, be concerned on possible rotation ahead of the visit of Arsenal and it’s likely that, week-to-week, that threat will remain with Torres waiting in the wings.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian timed a return to form perfectly to reward double Gameweek investors, scoring for the second consecutive match to take him to six goals for the season. With a seven-point return before bonus, Hazard matched the much-fancied Juan Mata in the Gameweek, despite the Spaniard’s hat-trick of assists at Stoke.

César Azpilicueta
The decision to rest Branislav Ivanovic to the bench and retain the Spaniard at right-back could be seen as a huge vote of confidence. While Ivanovic was perhaps due a break, Azpilicueta has now started the last six and 11 of the last 12 league outings. Keep the role for the visit of Arsenal and we can start to consider him as Rafa Bentiez’s first choice for that position, with Ivanovic perhaps destined to compete for the central defensive roles.

Rickie Lambert
Thirteen consecutive league starts came to an end as Nigel Adkins opted to stat with Guly Do Prado in his side, presumably feeling that Lambert needed to rest his legs for the home clash with Everton. Once again, however, he was not to be denied, cracking his second strike of the Gameweek to repay those who showed faith in the Saints’ hitman. With ten goals for the season, Lambert goes on presenting superb value for his modest price tag.

Jason Puncheon
A first goal in six league starts was worth the wait as the Southampton winger silenced the Chelsea fans with a strike of real quality. Like Lambert, Puncheon remains a hugely popular choice at the budget end of the market and, with doubts mounting on Raheem Sterling’s security of start for Liverpool, tonight’s goal will have boosted Puncheon further in the minds of potential suitors searching for a fifth midfielder in their January wildcard selections.

Nathaniel Clyne
The right-back completes Southampton’s trio of strong budget options having returned his third assist of the season in tonight’s game. With Luke Shaw also impressing on the left flank, Nigel Adkins’ side have two 4.0 options that appear to present an attacking intent that warrants interest.

Going Down

Branislav Ivanovic
We can’t be hasty and start to question Ivanovic’s security of start just yet – particularly given the fact that the Serb has started the last 14 competitive matches for the Blues. He was due a rest at some point and Rafa’s decision could be made with the visit of Arsenal in mind. However, having made glaring errors in the recent Capital One Cup tie, Ivanovic owners are suddenly fidgeting at the prospect of the 7.1 valued defender slipping down the pecking order and competing with the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz for a central defensive role.

Fernando Torres
Does Rafa’s decision to start with Ba once again suggest that, already, the Senegalese striker is in the driving seat for the centre-forward role? The weekend clash with Arsenal will tell us more. Should Torres find himself benched again, it will indicate a pecking order has been established.

David Luiz
Back in defence for the second match running, Luiz owners will now be concerned that Rafa has cooled on the idea of deploying the Brazilian in a midfield role. John Terry’s likely return is set to add to the completion for starts at the back and with Luiz having started the last seven, there will be concern that a rest is also on the horizon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well look at that, a fourth straight gameweek rank inside the top 100k. This is probably the best run I've ever been on in this game. Now looking to ruin it all by wildcarding.

Hope you lot did well too, weeks like this one is when us posters and readers on here truly make ground on others I reckon.

Hey Two Clips, and cheers. And to you too Royscalleranne. Feels good to climb the rankings.

Zabaleta is my first pick out of all defenders in the game as things stand, so I would get him in as soon as I could. That said I doubt he'll repay you that -4 in one gameweek. Might as well wait for next I think.

Pick one please? On a WC this GW.

    A) Cazorla + Pogrebnyak (benched) - straight swap for Bale

    B) Podolski + Budget MF (benched) - will require 2 transfers to get Bale + Pog after.

Let me know if you think I'm being silly (I'm not sure if I am or if I'm being perfectly reasonable):

I think it would be a great bit of business if Everton bought Diame for a £6-10m. He's great to have in a sort of CDM role and could easily play in the first XI ahead of Neville - I know, I know, club captain and loved by them but is he really that good? I think he could genuinely make a huge difference to them and give them a great shot at a top 4 or at the very least they should relatively comfortably clinch the dreaded 5th place.

I think Diame is brilliant. He would be a great signing for Everton, especially if it allowed Fellaini to stay up in an advanced role.

He seems a solid enough player but I don't think he's a top 6 PL player.

Also Neville wouldn't start if everyone was fit, Gibson and Osman CM with Mirallas and Pienaar on the wings and Fellaini CAM, I would have thought.

Personally I think Everton have had a good start to the season and that but I can't see them finishing above Spurs and Arsenal, 6th is most likely imo.

We differ in opinion I guess. I think Diame is without a doubt a player with enough quality to slot in a top 6 team. I do think he's better than Gibson too.

Not sure there's a lot in it tbh although I haven't seen a lot of Diame. Gibson does seem injured a lot but he's almost always done a decent job when I've seen him play.

Remember Diame couldn't even get into the Wigan starting 11 in the second half of last season.

To be fair you do make a good point about injuries, no point spending £6m+ if Gibson can put in solid efforts when fit again. I forgot about him lol, had he not been in the squad Diame would have been the perfect solution.

What are people's thoughts on City defensive cover?

I feel pretty safe with Nastasic, whilst appreciating Zabaleta may be a slightly better option.

Getting Nastasic on WC means I can afford Jonny Evans too, so I'm leaning towards him.

I'm warming to the idea of three decent defenders, with the mentioned options all in the range of 5.5 - 6.0m. Could be a better source of points than a similar marginal investment in midfield or attack.

No desire to get in the middle of this. Saw this post earlier but didn't read it until now -- found it helpful, and I learned a bit of UK geography as well.

          Yeah my plan was always to go;

          Silva –> Hazard –> Santi –> Nani –> WC

But now I'm not sure. Hazard is hitting form and Santi just isn't although he has a DGW

Nay. Without being biased I don't see lukaku outscoring Lambert by more than 4pts a very high % of the time this gameweek. Lambert can score against anyone, he has proved that, plus he is on pens and fks. If it was for free it may be worth a gamble but I'd just do ba to pod.

Hmm difficult, I don't particularly fancy pod this week personally. I have Walcott Gibbs and santi so I would prob do hazard to santi but then who do you bench out of Lambert and ba, tough one imo.

Lost at bottom of last page, sorry for the repost.
Have sold Bale, Walker, and Berbatov for Walcott, Zabaleta, and Podolski (-8) as I work my way through my team on a WC. If I just stopped now and saved the Jan WC for a bit longer would it have been worth it for dgw23 to have taken the big hit?
    GW23
    Guzan
    Baines Zabaleta Demel
    Walcott Mata Michu Fellaini

Is Azpilicueta > Gibbs a decent enough free transfer? Would leave me with:

    Foster(AVL)
    Gibbs(che/WHU) Santon(RDG) Demel(QPR/ars)
    Walcott(che/WHU) Sterling(NOR) Bale(MUN) Mata(ARS)
    Suarez(NOR) Van Persie(tot) Ba(ARS)

Bench - Begovic, Taarabt, Nelsen, Hangeland

What ya reckon? Better to invest further up the field in Cazorla or Podolski?
