A superb second-half comeback from Southampton stuns Stamford Bridge and denies Rafa Benitez a much-needed home win. Demba Ba notches a first league goal for the Blues, while strikes for Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon ensure that Gameweek 22’s double was a profitable one. With the FA Cup replays covered in the Scout Notes to follow, here’s the Stock Check on tonight’s league action…

On the Up

Demba Ba
The talk before the game was that the Senegalese striker was unlikely to start two matches in the space of four days but, by naming him in the lineup ahead of Fernando Torres, there is perhaps already a pecking order forming. Ba duly took just 25 minutes to again show his quality with a first league strike for his new club. Ba owners will, however, be concerned on possible rotation ahead of the visit of Arsenal and it’s likely that, week-to-week, that threat will remain with Torres waiting in the wings.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian timed a return to form perfectly to reward double Gameweek investors, scoring for the second consecutive match to take him to six goals for the season. With a seven-point return before bonus, Hazard matched the much-fancied Juan Mata in the Gameweek, despite the Spaniard’s hat-trick of assists at Stoke.

César Azpilicueta
The decision to rest Branislav Ivanovic to the bench and retain the Spaniard at right-back could be seen as a huge vote of confidence. While Ivanovic was perhaps due a break, Azpilicueta has now started the last six and 11 of the last 12 league outings. Keep the role for the visit of Arsenal and we can start to consider him as Rafa Bentiez’s first choice for that position, with Ivanovic perhaps destined to compete for the central defensive roles.

Rickie Lambert
Thirteen consecutive league starts came to an end as Nigel Adkins opted to stat with Guly Do Prado in his side, presumably feeling that Lambert needed to rest his legs for the home clash with Everton. Once again, however, he was not to be denied, cracking his second strike of the Gameweek to repay those who showed faith in the Saints’ hitman. With ten goals for the season, Lambert goes on presenting superb value for his modest price tag.

Jason Puncheon
A first goal in six league starts was worth the wait as the Southampton winger silenced the Chelsea fans with a strike of real quality. Like Lambert, Puncheon remains a hugely popular choice at the budget end of the market and, with doubts mounting on Raheem Sterling’s security of start for Liverpool, tonight’s goal will have boosted Puncheon further in the minds of potential suitors searching for a fifth midfielder in their January wildcard selections.

Nathaniel Clyne
The right-back completes Southampton’s trio of strong budget options having returned his third assist of the season in tonight’s game. With Luke Shaw also impressing on the left flank, Nigel Adkins’ side have two 4.0 options that appear to present an attacking intent that warrants interest.

Going Down

Branislav Ivanovic
We can’t be hasty and start to question Ivanovic’s security of start just yet – particularly given the fact that the Serb has started the last 14 competitive matches for the Blues. He was due a rest at some point and Rafa’s decision could be made with the visit of Arsenal in mind. However, having made glaring errors in the recent Capital One Cup tie, Ivanovic owners are suddenly fidgeting at the prospect of the 7.1 valued defender slipping down the pecking order and competing with the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz for a central defensive role.

Fernando Torres
Does Rafa’s decision to start with Ba once again suggest that, already, the Senegalese striker is in the driving seat for the centre-forward role? The weekend clash with Arsenal will tell us more. Should Torres find himself benched again, it will indicate a pecking order has been established.

David Luiz
Back in defence for the second match running, Luiz owners will now be concerned that Rafa has cooled on the idea of deploying the Brazilian in a midfield role. John Terry’s likely return is set to add to the completion for starts at the back and with Luiz having started the last seven, there will be concern that a rest is also on the horizon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm drafting this WC team post GW24:

    Bego, Bunn
    Gibbs, Davies, Wilson, Demel, Harte
    Bale, Mata, Michu, Fellaini, Puncheon
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

    0.0 ITB

No way I can afford it after the most probable rises of Gibbs and Davies 🙁

Would pull the trigger or play out GW23 and see what can be done?

he didn't say and it's just a bid. Doesn't mean they'll accept but IMO....

The £30m is one of two thing...

      1) Real. And most probably one of three players:
-Cavani (as he is not in Champs League anymore so more attainable) and what a fee commands.
-Gotze who has a release clause around £30m apparantly and we know Wenger is a big fan.
-Fellaini. Someone who we'd need a big amount to tempt and has the power that Wenger has stated on numerous occasions that Arsenal need in midfield.

      2) That this is a PR move by Arsenal to temporarily applease fans. We may have bid but it doesn't mean we'll get. It shows that we 'apparantly' trying and is let out to certain sources (like geoff). I mean it could potentially collapse any deal if found out. Also when have we ever spent huge for a start! lol.

Fellaini - looks a must have, form AND fixtures
Walcott - OOP, in decent form

Michu - would lose TONS of value on him if I sold

Walcott mainly because of his price tag and cloudiness surrounding his future at Arsenal and more important the possibility of returning to the wings. Despite still having pts potential he would have the most cons out of that lot IMO.

Have that midfield plus Puncheon after shipping Bale for Walcott. Does not feel good to be without Bale, and arguably Walcott and Mata have teammates worth considering for a big hitting attacker spot, whereas Bale and Michu are the only ones I'd want from their teams, but I have been looking at Michu and wondering how much longer he can keep this up -- just can't find anyone in my selling price category who comes close to that value.

All of you make decent points!

As long as Walcott starts regularly he's the only one id consider from Arsenal. Thing is, these players represent the best attacking threat in their respective teams IMO.

I'm asking cause I think I may switch to a VP - Aguero - Sturridge front 3, would need to downgrade one MF to be able to.

I don't have Michu right now, and at his current price I think he's solid, rather than spectacular value, so he's the one I'm going without. I agree with Fellaini although I'm a little worried about Anchibe pushing him back and stealing his points. Mata/Walcott are studs but I do worry about rotation (Rest for Mata, Walcott getting pushed out to the wing). So Bale is actually the only one I wouldn't consider selling. He leads all midfielders in shots over the last 4 weeks, even though he missed a match. Copyright: Chris Glover.

After this next GW take out Pod and Downgrade. 3rd striker here can be rotated with 5th midfielder.

Up to you but Sterling or Nolan need to go. Fellaini is looking good for Everton and rising.

Hughes, Lowton, Foster should all be taken out too. See what funds you have and look to a chelsea defender as they are consistent.

Looks like we'll get 1 more day to decide on getting Pod or not then....

    Really torn on this one:

    A) Azpil -> Gibbs. Azpil is perhaps due a rest, and it remains to be seen whether he will he be a rotation risk going forwards now that all the CHE defenders are fit. Also, given I have Szczesny already, is double ARS defence too much? Would also mean benching Davies (STO) this week, which seems a tad wasteful.

    B) Ba -> Podolski. Ironically, Ba starting (let alone scoring) tonight has made this decision much harder. If he is going to start most weeks then I'd want to keep him. On the flip side, Podolski is now rested for the DGW so should play both IMO. On pens with Arteta out, and capable of a higher score than Gibbs. However, was he rested, or was he dropped tonight?....

    C) Save the transfer, stick with 2 ARS & 1 WHU this week, and reassess next week. Perhaps the sensible play, but we have seen how profitable these DGWs can be, so perhaps the biggest mistake of all would be not to pull the trigger?

    SZCZESNY, (Bunn)
    DEMEL, Baines, Davies, (Azpil), (Harte)
    WALCOTT, Mata, Bale, Fellaini, (Marveaux)
    Rvp, Ba, Lambert

Yeah, think this also. Torres put in a pretty poor 15 mins also, and with CHE dropping I think they have to play their best 11 against us this w/e, and that means Ba starts.

Thoughts on Azpil -> Gibbs? At least we know (well, kinda) that Gibbs is a nailed on starter, and he offers a very decent attacking threat for a defender. Azpil could well be rotated from now on in too.

I'd say B. Pod is looking likely for a couple of starts due to his rest tonight, and taking advantage of DGWs can make or break your season.

Re: Ba, I really don't know if he will start every week or not. Nobody does. He might prove to be the Tevez of the second half of the season, and very frustrating to own.

Has anyone looked at Wilshire's stats in the last 6 weeks?

As DM, has the same number of chances created and final third possession as Santi.

If he remains CAM, could be interesting double game week option. 4 shots, 4 shots on target, 1 goal.

Got 7.4 in the bank for one striker. Just used my wildcard so my squad's pretty much settled for the long term, meaning I'll have a free transfer to spend on anything next gameweek. What's best?

    A) Dzeko for this GW, selling him for Berbatov or Lukaku for long term afterwards

    B) Berbatov for long term, saving my free transfer for something else that may crop up

    C) Lukaku for long term, or even just for this GW and then bringing in Berbatov afterwards

Ruiz, but he's having that hamstring problem
Di Santo, if you believe in Wigan's late season over drives
Le Fondre/Pogrebnyak, to free up some fund
Weimann, if you wanna take a punt upon my Benteke-Weimann = Berbatov-Ruiz theory

But Holt indeed is the more assured/less of a punt.

All options, I just quite like having a short term punt on someone, and 3 home games in 4 for a 5.9 striker who will play CF every game isn't a bad option at all.

Am seriously considering him as my 3rd ARS player for the dgw -- he fits in nicely in the budget spot at 5th mid and with Arteta gone I see him starting both matches. I normally hate to react to one goal, esp. in a cup match, but he is positioned well imo as a nice differential. Plus, don't have any doubt about Theo as captain if Podolski and Wilshere are my other two players.

BFS will set his team out to be very defensive at the Emirates imo - fancy we will struggle to break them down (as we so often do), so I'm not so sure it'll be a landslide win. My bet is 1-0 or 2-0.

We also have the best defensive record away from home in the league, so wouldn't rule us out keeping CHE out (unlikely, but possible). Also acts as a slight hedge against a Ba fail.... 😉

What about if he starts again vs ARS and scores?

Podolski 'could' be great this week, but he's more than capable of 2 x 1 pointers as well. On reflection, I'm gonna say just Azpil -> Gibbs regardless of the fact you are WCing next week.

Two 1 pointers?! wow that would be a serious disappointment! I suppose he could be taken off early again but after being rested tonight i fully expect him to play 60 + minutes against Chelsea.

Ba is a tough one. I think he'll start and he's every chance to score again against Arsenal. However i also think Arsenal will have to start scoring heavily soon. They could have had 10 tonight and i reckon they will beat West Ham by 3 no problem. Will Podolski be amongst it? Well he's on pens now (i think) and has done ok for his first few months in a new league. 6 goals, 6 assists and 11 bonus points isn't too bad a return at all

Yeah, it's a tough call. The point hit sways me away from doing both in your situation, but that's not to say it won't work out.

Pod has the higher ceiling, but his gametime does concern me.

WHU could be tricky. Yes they have defensive issues, but BFS knows how to defend against us (Bolton days). I don't see them taking the game to us, so I see a CS for ARS as more probable than a spanking.

Think I'm doing Azpil -> Gibbs myself, but the decision is made a bit easier because it's more long term than yours (I'm not wildcarding any time soon)

Ok, all sound logic. Thanks for the input
