Lukas Podolski returns to full training ahead of Arsenal’s home game with West Ham this evening. Ryan Nelsen will play his final match for QPR against City next Tuesday evening, Benoit Assou-Ekotto is confident of winning back his left-back role, Newcastle snap up a new centre-half, while Villa are dumped out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of Bradford.

Arsene Wenger rolled out an injury update yesterday ahead of this evening’s home clash with West Ham. Speaking to the Arsenal website, Wenger revealed that Francis Coquelin is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while he will “have to check” on Abou Diaby after the Frenchman played four back-to-back games following a three-month absence. More positively for Fantasy managers, though, the Gunners boss also admitted that Lukas Podolski could make a return for this evening’s encounter…

“We could have Podolski back in the squad because he is back to full training today. Yes he’s better. He was sick. And maybe Oxlade-Chamberlain back in the squad because he has been sick. Maybe he will go out today and practise again.”

Certainly, both players were later pictured in a series of stills taken from training, suggesting they could well be set to return against the Hammers. Not only will the news afford a little more optimism to the 35,000+ FPL managers who transferred in Podolski for the double, the knock-on effect of the injury situation could see Wenger reshuffle his side. With Coquelin out, Mikel Arteta still sidelined and question marks hanging over Diaby, the Gunners may field Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey in the double-pivot tomorrow. Wilshere’s return to a deeper role would allow Santi Cazorla to revert to the role in “the hole”, with Podolski back on the left, while Oxlade-Chamberlain’s comeback would also afford Wenger the chance to shift Theo Walcott to the lone forward role – Walcott had played there in each of the last five prior to Sunday’s trip to Chelsea but the spate of injuries meant Olivier Giroud was handed a chance through the middle instead. Given Giroud’s poor display, it’d be little surprise if Wenger chose to shuffle his pack as he attempts to recover from the weekend loss at the Bridge.

Reports have confirmed Ryan Nelsen is set to play his final match for QPR next Tuesday evening before taking up the reins at MLS club Toronto FC. The news is a bitter blow for Harry Redknapp after a recent upturn in defensive resilience saw the R’s concede just once in the last three – Nelsen has featured in all but one match under the new boss, having missed the Gameweek 19 clash with West Brom due to a flu virus. Coming in at just 4.1 in FPL, Nelsen has thrived as a cut-price option since the dismissal of Mark Hughes – he has averaged 4.3 points per game under Redknapp, compared to a previous average of just 2.4 ppg. His 7.3% owners will now be scouring the market for an alternative; Nedum Onouha is similarly priced and has now played the last four at right-back, while Clint Hill has played every minute under Redknapp and comes in at 4.3. Anton Ferdinand looks to remain out of the picture – reports this morning stated that he is on his way to Bursaspor on loan. It must be stated that confidence in QPR’s ability to keep up their recent defensive displays is likely to take a turn for the worse after Nelsen’s departure, though, forcing his owners to perhaps look elsewhere for alternatives.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto seems more than confident of reclaiming his left-back berth from Kyle Naughton over the coming weeks. After climbing off the bench against United on Sunday to play a part in his side’s late equaliser, the Cameroon international was in a buoyant mood…

“I’m not worried because obviously I can do stuff with my left foot that he [Naughton] can’t do. He’s not a real left-back and I don’t think he has the same left foot as me, so I’m not worried about that. To come back in the Premier League is quite hard because it’s high-tempo, but sometimes it’s easier to play against Man United than against a team in the bottom half, so I think it was a good game for me to come back in.”

Sidelined since Gameweek 3 due to a knee injury, Sunday was Assou-Ekotto’s first taste of league action as he continues to build up his match-fitness after the lengthy lay-off. Having featured from the start in the recent FA Cup Third Round win over Coventry, he’s likely to get the nod for this weekend’s Fourth Round trip to Leeds and is clearly edging towards a starting berth in the league once again. While Naughton has now featured in the first XI in the last five Gameweeks, his limitations as a left-back were exposed against United – he continually cut inside onto his favoured right foot and resultantly slowed down his side’s attacks. As a natural left-footer, Assou-Ekotto offers a better balance at the back and his cross from deep eventually led to Clint Dempsey’s leveller, via a poor attempted punch by David De Gea. Priced at 4.2 in FPL, Naughton has recently acquired a steady stream of owners but his security of starts looks less certain by the week; while Assou-Ekotto’s 6.0 price tag is hardly appetising by comparison, a return of two goals and five assists last season serves a reminder of his attacking capabilities from deep.

Villa were left licking their wounds last night after exiting the Capital One Cup at the hands of Bradford. Paul Lambert made three changes from the side that drew at West Brom on Saturday evening, with Brad Guzan, Ashley Westwood and Nathan Baker replaced by Shay Given, Stephen Ireland and Barry Bannan for the second leg of the semi-final but despite a 2-1 win, the midlands outfit were sent packing 4-3 on aggregate. Joe Bennett supplied the assist for Christian Benteke’s opener before subs Darren Bent and Andreas Weimann combined for the latter to slot home late on but it was too little, too late for Lambert’s side as their dire run of form continued. They now face a trip to Millwall in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup at the weekend before resuming league duties on Tuesday with a crucial home clash against fellow strugglers Newcastle.

The Magpies have strengthened their squad ahead of that clash. Alan Pardew continued his winter shopping spree yesterday by acquiring centre-half Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier. The defender follows on the heels of Mathieu Debuchy as the Newcastle boss looks to address his side’s woeful displays at the back this term – they have registered just four clean sheets and shipped 41 goals, only 10 less than their total for the previous campaign. The move looks to be edging Fabricio Coloccini towards the exit door – the centre-half is reportedly unsettled on Tyneside and is set on moving back to his native Argentina before the window closes. Pardew’s business is unlikely to end there, either – reports yesterday suggest the Magpies are closing in on a deal for midfielder Moussa Sissoko, while forward Yoan Gouffran is also close to completing a deal. We’ll have a Scout Report on Yanga-Mbiwa with you later today and will roll out articles on the other two if the deals are indeed completed.

Good posters around, and pages aren't running too, apt time to ask.

Those who don't know, I'm looking to go RVP-less from now on. But I'd need to calculate it properly. So this is what I think I'll do.

Gibbs to Evra AND RVP to Aguero this week (GW24).

Dzeko to Fletcher (GW25, where City play Liverpool and Sunderland play Reading)

Fellaini to Bale (Everton play United and Bale gets Newcastle)

Luiz to G Johnson (Chelsea play City, and GJ's fixtures cool down a bit)

Yeah I know I'm probably thinking a bit too much already, but I think we all need to at least focus on it, so that we keep away from kneejerking.

    Thoughts much appreciated.

Yeah and I thought of that, but I have a strong case for not having RVP. I'd be having the 3 most attacking defenders in the league in Baines, Johnson and Evra, 3 heavy mids that can produce good scores week in week out with Bale, Mata, Walcott, and Michu's there ofcourse. Sturridge, Aguero and Fletcher. I can't see a reason why I shouldn't be tempted, the only thing is the captaincy though. If I could work it out, it'll do wonders..

Decent blog by Le Grove today:

First up, Arsene Wenger had a bit of a nightmare in the press conference yesterday. His first clanger was when he suggested the current player might be more committed than Big T and TH.

“These players care as much [as the likes of Adams, Henry], maybe even more.”

Ouch. Arsene, the only players with commitment levels on those levels are Jack Wilshere, Jack Wilshere and Jack Wilshere. Don’t give me they care the same as two of our greatest servants, because it’s quite clear they don’t. Thierry Henry might have acted like a princess on occasions, but the man cared for the club deeply and put his all in even during the darker days. Tony Adams… well… jeez… he has a statue outside the stadium. Nobody complained about that happening. Why? Because the man bled Arsenal in every game. 100% commitment to the cause, immense pride to wear the shirt and a drive so determined, we’d be lucky to see it again.

People say that Arsene was pushed into a corner with that question… perhaps he should have just ignored it? Or turned it on its head? I mean, the guy is a bit long in the tooth to get drawn into making ridiculously inflammatory comments that upset the fans. No sooner had he said that, he was slamming the players commitment in the big games…

“You want to win your big games and turn up with a committed attitude,”

“Last year we could win big games and on Sunday you come out of the game and think ‘what is happening?’ They want to do well and are focused, but maybe a bit too respectful in the big games with other teams.’

What the hell does ‘too respectful’ mean? That’s a cop out. Since when does playing with no heart equate to too much respect? Those boys don’t show enough respect for the shirt they’re wearing and the job they’re supposed to be doing. Anyway, you said two minutes ago they were as committed if not more than Tony Adams and Thierry Henry? What happened? Those guys turned up for the big games.

This next quote is the one that really gets me…

“It was a fantastic opportunity this season,”

“To catch Manchester United is out of sight at the moment. We have to get closer to the people in front of us before we can think that. United is far, but there is no untouchable team in the country.”

Firstly, it was only last week that he admitted to Amy Lawrence he knew he was giving the title to United when he sold them Robin Van Persie. Blame the players all you want, but giving the second best team in the country your best striker, then blaming the players for not catching them is a bit rich. I understand why we sold him to the only team who bid for him, but actually, the second mistake was assuming you could replace him on a budget. If you sell the best striker in the world, you need to replace him with someone who has the ingredients to be world class. That, or bring in world class. Which is expensive, but you wouldn’t have gone far wrong with Cavani, Demba Ba (£7.5m is outrageously cheap) or even someone like Lewandowski.

The point is, we finished a million miles away from the top last year, sold our two best performers, bought in a few potentially good players… and expected to make up a 20 point gap? What planet does Arsene live on where he thinks he can constantly defy the laws of the transfer market by buying cheap players to replace top, top quality. Sure, you can get away with it sometimes, but you can’t pull off miracles every summer. United finished level points with City, then went out and spent £50million. Bayern finished second and remedied that by spending £70million. How arrogant do you have to be to finish third and think you can catch the teams ahead turning in a transfer surplus?

If anyone is at fault for the shocking season we’ve had, it’s Arsene.

Tonight, we’re in trouble again. Coquelin and Arteta both miss the game through injury. There are also late fitness tests for Podolski, Chamberlain… and you guessed it…ABOU DIABY.

I mean honestly, what a joke. Two games back from injury and we’re already talking about him being out or needing a rest. Wenger knew this could happen, in fact, he didn’t just know, it was a straight up guarantee, yet he’s still not done anything about replacing him? He’s talking about Diame, which is positive, but I feel he’s only looking at him because he’s available for £3.5m (and the unsettle him). It’s price tags before usefulness everytime with Arsene Wenger. Fellaini is available for £22million. Arguably, a far better player who is in much better form. Why aren’t we looking at him? Why aren’t we knocking down the doors of every major club that has financial difficulties in Europe and seeing what we can muster up? Sevilla are in massive trouble, Valencia have defaulted on a loan… that can’t be the last of the clubs dying on their ass. What about the Italian league? What about the Dutch league? This lack of action when Europe is suffering the rainiest year of all time is truly illuminating.

Yesterday’s scouting mission wasn’t about those guys being right… it was about an amateur spending 10 minutes on the internet and identifying a 27 year old capped Spanish striker who has bagged 96 goals in 4 seasons currently playing for a club that is being bankrolled by a local council. It was finding an Argentinian international midfielder with caps who can control games, pass the ball and get stuck in. I’m not a paid scout, but I can name plenty of players we could pick off. What is our scouting network doing? Why have they returned zero this month? It’s startling. Our manager says he hasn’t been shown anyone who can improve our squad.

    Are you joking?

It took a number of years to get to this point, but finally, the curtain of excused have been ripped down. What’s left? An Arsene Wenger totally exposed. He has money, the players are available… and he’s still not making moves. Do people think this has been the first year he’s had cash available? I hope not. He’s had funds available for at least 4 seasons now, it’s only this year it’s become obvious that he’s banked £200m without reinvesting in the squad. Now he’s in trouble, but Stan owes him credit points, so we might have to suffer another 18months of this.

Anyway, let’s hope Arsenal magic up three points so we don’t lose sight of Spurs this evening.

Cavani would have taken 45m+(out of picture)

Lewandowski like Kagawa and Sahin will go to a club which will have immediate
silverware(not necessarily Lewnadowski doing well though)

Only possibility was Ba but we know how good Arsenal are at maintaining players
who might just have an injury riddled future

Agree that they were all unlikely signings (apart from Ba). My biggest problem with Arsene is the constant lies. He's never straight with the fans, if he was, maybe they'd be more understanding of the current situation.

Form over fixture, so toss up between Fletcher / Benteke. Since AV v NEW is more of a 6 pointer and therefore a draw does'nt really alleviate each teams pressure, I would go with Benteke even though iI

Very very similar to what Ive been looking at (as we were comparing rmt scores suggests!).

If you stick in a midfield of Mata/Bale/Walcott/Fellaini/Silva and forgo Aguero (this is the part I potentially disagree with!) and have a frontline of RVP/Ruiz/Fletcher you can actually get a better set of numbers and enables you to bench Fellaini in gwk 26/29 away at Ars and Utd.

Hell, the model even suggests dropping Mata away to City for Ruiz at home to Stoke in gwk27, which i dont think I could bring myself to do!

It depends entirely on fixtures. At the time, all 5 had good fixtures and form and there were no obvious striker picks:

          Rooney - Injured
          Aguero - Injured
          Suarez - 3 tough games

It made sense, and still does as i can still afford RVP & Aguero uptop.

IMO I've got the power 5.

There's a common misconception of who is in it, that's all.

      Haha... I like this.

The power 5 is a load of rubbish anyway... there's about 8-9 midfielders who are performing well, all worthy of inclusion. Nobody is essential. Nobody is a must have.

I think they'll surely sign Butland if they let Reina go though. Still, it'd be excellent without a doubt, as I don't think even Butland's price would be too high.

My WC team looks pretty generic with only aguero and de Guzman/ruiz as my differentials

    Szcezny bunn

    Zabaleta Dawson Davies demel Harte

    Walcott bale mata fellaini deGuzman

    Rvp Ruiz aguero

Is swapping Walcott + mata > gerrard + hazard worth the risk?

Hazard is only 10pts behind mata with less time and 0.5 cheaper. Also his you'd think half the 25% that own him are ghost players that started with him

I wanted Gerrard but was afraid of Bale. I chose Gerrard eventually because I was worried that Spurs v United would be called off.

Ba and Aguero only getting 20 minutes between them was annoying.

In hindsight my only real regret on the wildcard was keeping Puncheon instead of getting Jole. It would have meant a Michu benching, which I decided against.
