When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

I could do it if I dropped Suarez, but I can't do it as:

      a) he's too damn good;

Evening lads, who'd you bench this week out of this front 8? Am planning on moving back to a 343 to avoid this dilemma for the remainder of the season.

    Mata Bale Walcott Michu Fellaini
    Hernandez Podolski Aguero

I fancy the chances of my front 3 scoring given minutes, and will be captaining Aguero, so am looking to bench one from my midfield 5.

    Mata - rdg(A)
    - only played one half this weekend so Mata has had some degree of rest.
    Bale - nor(A)
    - Norwich in poor form, but then so is Bale
    Walcott - LIV(H)
    - In a rich vein of form, is probably close to essential at the moment.
    Michu - sun(A)
    - Has not returned double figures in over a month and a half. Have a gut feel he may register against Sunderland.
    Fellaini - WBA(H)
    - On the bench at the minute as Everton are struggling to score, but it's a home game against an out of sorts West Brom team.

Who would you lose out of the 5 this week, and long term? Fellaini?

    Cheers.

I keep reading about Ba's likely rotation...and he will be...but that isn't the same as not playing in some games..I believe Ba will play in just about every game for the rest of the season for all or some part of...not a risk at all...He'll notch plenty..

If you're active with your team (and don't have other pressing transfers), then it should be possible to transfer in a key forward from teams with favourable fixtures, or a striker hitting form for a 'lesser' team for the same money as Ba, and to gain more points than a 1 in 3 goal ratio from Ba?

Ba will be a good punt to play most league games when the Europa league starts as Torres will play in European Games

On my WC, trying to build value. Have the squad as this at present:

    Bego Bunn
    Demel Azpi Davies Harte Gibbs
    Fellaini Bale Michu Mata Walcott
    RVP Suarez Fletcher

No cash left. If I stick with it, it gives me a real bench dilemma. Should I stick? If not, which of those front 8 would you downgrade? I would use the cash to upgrade Gibbs or Azpi to Zabaleta.

Great team but it will always leaving you with a benching problem. There will be times when big points will be left on your bench but if you don't mind this, go ahead. Personally I would downgrade Fletcher to Lambert/Remy and upgrade Gibbs to Zab just for my own peace of mind. Lambert/Remy could also score big but I wouldn't feel as bad as I would never consider starting them.

I'd go Bertrand or Nastatic at the moment.

Out of those 2, I'd say Rafael due to Kompany's injury.

I Want aguero in, but its only possible for me to do with an RVP Aguero Lambert front line, although it leaves me with Guthrie in MF(plus Michu Mata Walcott Gerrard), and a weak backline of Clyne, Harte, Zabaleta, Davies, Demel..

    I have a question.

In my mini leaugue we have a monthly manager competition every month. For january it looks like the minus points for extra transfers has not been withdrawn, and it looks like it is the points from GW 21 who is wrong.

Is this only in my mini league or is this a problem with FPL or somthing a don't understand?

    Zaba, Gibbs, Davies, Cameron, Harte
    Mata, Michu, Fellaini, Walcott, Puncheon
    RVP, Aguero, Fletcher

0.1m left in the bank. Any changes needed? Not sure about my keepers.
