When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Out of interest, do people disagree with me that Spurs don't have great fixtures in their next 6?

Fair point. I think in reality it might be in the middle, perhaps 4 or 5 goals in those 3 away games. I'll be very fortunate to get a Bale blank in all of them, but as long as he doesn't go crazy, I'm happy. I just backed Walcott to score more than Bale in the next 6, that's all.

This is something I have mulling over as well. The thing with Clichy, he has and will get more competition for his place, whilst short term with a rest at the weekend and Kompany's injury Nasty will get an automatic nod at least for a couple of games.

    Wilkinson, Shawcross, Dawson (Clyne, Harte)

    Walcott, Michu, Bale, Gerrard, (Guthrie)

    RVP, Aguero, Fletcher

1.1m in the bank, planning to swap fletcher for Sturridge in 2 gameweeks time, can swap dawson for someone a little bit better with the spare money to have my 3rd defender to go with Wilko and Shawcross

Change Cesar. Is Aguero worth £11m? If not you could get a cheaper striker and upgrade defence.

    Hey there,

I've just been messing around with some really basic stats with a view to finding who has the best chances of keeping a clean sheet this mid-week. I've added a team's average home or away concession rate to their respective oppositions home or away scoring rate to come up with a figure. Here's the top seven's chances based on those results (lowest figure best)...

    LIiverpool 4.37
    Arsenal 3.09
    Chelsea 2.64
    Tottenham 2.63
    Man. United 2.63
    Everton 2.38
    Man. City 1.64

So, despite being away from home, it look's like the City back four will be smoking cigars on Tuesday night while the Liverpool back line will be waking up totally shell-shocked on Thursday morning.

    Questions for the gurus -

Sturridge on 89%, does he have to reach 100% before midnight ( almost impossible to happen)for a price rise to kick in? Then cannot rise before midnight tomorrow as this percent yoke will reset again ? Gonna swap him for Luis but wanna wait til tomorrow night in case of injuries, babies, ball boys, twitter, weather etc 😉

I'm actually surprised that people on here don't work together to try and get a double rise from a player. Remember the the whole Central African Republic push that attracted so many.

If you selected a very low ownership for everyone to pick & get a 0.1 rise before getting rid of. 🙂

The competition element I suppose and wildcards at different times would scupper this anyway i'd say? 🙂

It takes 20m transfers for a price rise. We don't have nearly as many people actively posting / reading on here that would contribute to such an effort.

Also, this would be market manipulation so you may get sanctioned by the FPL IRS. 😀
