Another Wayne Rooney goal, another Robin Van Persie blank – United’s hard-fought victory at the Cottage added further fuel to the fire for Fantasy managers. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Wayne Rooney
Despite being moved to the left midway through the second-half, the former Everton man secured the points with a calm finish. Having grabbed a double last time out against Southampton, Rooney is staking a real case for consideration either as an alternative or partner for Robin Van Persie in our forward lines and looks a real differential with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership under 7%. His consistency of late has been staggering – tonight’s goal made it eight in the last six league starts.

Jonny Evans
His return to the starting lineup made an immediate difference at the Cottage. United had registered clean sheets in each of Evans’ previous two appearances – given they had conceded in the last three without him, his calming influence at the back looks to be a major factor. With the assist for Rooney’s goal, Evans looks set to earn FPL bonus points to cap another assured display.

Going Down

Robin Van Persie
The Dutchman has now registered back-to-back blanks – coinciding with Rooney’s return to the starting XI. The Dutchman had produced in each of his previous ten and while there’s no doubting his consistency over the season, many are now contemplating a switch as mini-leagues start to heat up with the quest for differentials becoming a key factor. With a favourable run of fixtures ahead, Van Persie’s owners will be confident of a return to form but Rooney’s kinder 11.8 FPL price tag liberates budget to be utilised elsewhere.

Antonio Valencia
Handed a start on the right in a 4-4-2, the former Wigan man disappointed yet again and was hauled off on 65 minutes. It’s a single assist in 11 appearances now for Valencia and with Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa pushing for game time, he could well return to the periphery once more. Fantasy managers have been deprived of an assured midfield asset in the United squad all season: there is little sign of that situation changing.

Brede Hangeland
Owned by more than 6% of the Fantasy Premier League player base, Hangeland has been a major disappointment so far this season: yet again he’s without a goal and, with just three clean sheets, his return have failed to live up to a pre-season billing which hailed him as a potential bargain. Tonight the Norwegian suffered his latest setback, withdrawn at half-time with a knock, rumoured to be an Achilles problem, which may now make him a doubt for Fulham’s next outing at Norwich.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

He is a great pick but bad defensively as you can see from the results. So I think he will go back to being a rotation risk once Luiz and Mikel are back.

    Pulis interview was spot on!

Interviewer: "Do you feel your tactics were justified?"
Pulis: "What tactics are them? If you compare the two clubs [Arsenal and Stoke City] in respect of resources, what he's spent and what we've spent and where they've come from and where we've come from, it's not a level playing field.

"So you have to really, really dig in and come to these places and work very hard and that's what we've done and every time we come to Arsenal we do that, we make it very, very difficult for them, and a lot of their supporters and managers, and other people, they don't like it when you work very, very hard and you deny them space and time, but that's part and parcel of the game."

"I wish I had his squad, I wish I had his resources, then you play a bit more open and you take more chances; but we are who we are and we're very proud of what we've got and what we've done."

Pretty much sums up why people don't like us. First and foremost, they forget that football is actually a sport, rather than an entertainment. The majority of those that slag us off are casual fans that have scarcely been to a game in their lives. It also highlights why these sort of games are so boring, non-competitive and pointless.

So you're saying we should be better than them? Also read what he says with regard to "Where they've come from."

The justification that Arsene Wenger has over-achieved in the last few years is completely and utterly flawed. It's not just the players on the pitch that we're talking about, it's the backroom resources available to them that are able to give them that extra 5% on a match day.

Of course, Stoke can go out and buy a Santi Cazorla like Arsenal, can't they?

We try. We're Stoke though. Think about the bigger picture rather than imagining the buying and selling and players to be as easy as clicking a few buttons on Football Manager.

It would be great if it was like that, but it's not. There's numerous factors that come into play and I think one of the biggest ones is the location and stature of the club.

Football at the highest level is a spectator sport first and foremost. Negative tactics are not entertaining to the masses. I've been watching football a long time and at a far worse level than Stoke are at but the Premiership is followed world wide and if more sides or the majority of sides were as awful to watch as Stoke it wouldn't be.

I'm not denying that and if I was a Stoke supporter I'd be chuffed to bits, I'm not though and I like watching entertaining football. I rarely find Stoke entertaining and would enjoy the Premiership more if they weren't in it, I figure a lot of people feel the same.

People forget football is attack and defence. If one team can defend better than the other team can attack, then good on them. There's a lot of skill in good defending but many people don't recognise it

Haven't Stoke spent more on transfers than Arsenal? Not on wages though obviously.

        See above.

Your second point is valid, Soccernomics found that the position of teams in the Premier League was typically, though not exhaustively, correlated with wage spend.

Get off your high horse. We all know good defensive football when we see it. Problem with Stoke's undeniably good defensive football is that they can be really dirty at times. Pulis loves to pull that "resources" card too. Stoke have the liberty to invite investment into their club any time they want. Enough with the bs

What he's saying is Stoke haven't got the resources to beat these sorts of teams by playing an open, expansive passing game, so they have to adapt their style. Harry Redknapp is doing the same at QPR but it seems to have gone largely unnoticed so far (presumably because it is Redknapp, rather than Pulis).

I think in terms of our wage spend, we're overachieving or just about achieving as we should be. Transfer funds are irrelevant.

Their style of play reflects Pulis' vision of his team. Their are clubs with lesser resources than Stoke who don't resort to the kind of tactics Stoke do. Hate their football, have no desire to ever watch them even if I can appreciate certain aspects of their game - it's not all bad.

Okay I've decided on my moves: (-4 hit)

Azpilicueta, Dempsey, RVP ➡ Johnson, Gerrard, Suarez (with Michu and Davies)

Then I can either do Johnson --> Sagna and play with 10 men in GW27, or take a -4 hit to do Johnson + Suarez --> Sagna + RVP with 11 men in GW27
