We roll out our regular look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, analysing the top five contenders in the Scout League, tipping our hat to our FFS Members league and checking out the hectic transfer activity as bandwagons accelerate ahead of the double Gameweek.

Kelvin Travers keeps his spot at the top of the Scout League after a 70 point performance in Gameweek 25. Despite handing Robin Van Persie the armband, he still kept ahead of the chasing pack thanks to contributions from Sergio Aguero and Rickie Lambert up top, while Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata done the business in midfield. At the back, Michael Dawson and Jussi Jaaskelainen chipped in with a clean sheet apiece to help Kelvin onto 1654 points – second in the overall standings.

Site regular T.I. is a non-mover in second after registering 61 points at the weekend. He also captained Van Persie and despite the frustration of Demba Ba’s broken nose withdrawal at former club Newcastle, was helped by Walcott, Bale and Marouane Fellaini. At the back, Ian Harte and Leighton Baines both provided an assist apiece as TI moved to fourth overall, on 1636 points.

Bigo1 is a new entry at number three. He chose to hand Bale the armband and was rewarded with 22 points from the Welshman, while Fellaini, Walcott, Lambert and Wojciech Szczesny all produced as he finished the Gameweek with 72 points; seventh overall, on 1626 points.

Climbing to number four is Paul O’Gorman, after a 78 point haul. Fellaini landed him a 30 point armband haul alone, with Bale, Mata, Walcott and Lambert all producing attacking returns as Paul moved to 1614 points – fourteenth in the overall standings.

Finally, Dan Jones remains in fifth. He racked up 70 points last weekend, with Walcott, Fellaini, Lambert, Baines and Szczesny joined by the likes of Frank Lampard, Lukas Podolski and Jose Enrique in picking up the points. Dan sits on 1613 points, fifteenth overall.

Thanks to our top five, Fantasy Football Scout remains top of the best leagues. Our FFS Members league is in second spot, just 3.8 points behind, and has the world number one Julian Zipparo leading the way, with T.I. sitting in second. Julian returned to the top of the overall standings after an 85 point haul in Gameweek 25 – his decision to captain Fellaini proved pivotal, while Bale, Mata, Lambert, Szczesny and Patrice Evra were his other key performers.

For contributors, Mark remains on top after 71 points last weekend. Fellaini, Walcott and Mata chipped in from midfield, while Podolski and Edin Dzeko both notched up top. At the back, Szczesny, Baines and Harte helped Mark up to 625th in the overall standings.

Market Trends

Given their relatively lowly ownerships, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge lead the way for transfers in ahead of Liverpool’s impending double. Both have been acquired by over 86,000 FPL managers, while Luis Suarez is around the 80,000 mark – by some distance, the trio are the most popular acquisitions for the double this week.

Ben Davies leads the way for defenders with 31,000+ new owners, while Glen Johnson is slightly ahead of Jose Enrique, by 24,000 to 22,000, in spite of the latter’s cheaper price tag. Jonathan de Guzman’s mid-price appeal has persuaded over 24,000 to jump aboard the bandwagon – with Michu fielded up top for the last two, the Dutchman could well retain his advanced midfield role for Swansea’s pair of fixtures. Michu has almost 20,000 new owners since last weekend as his ownership climbs beyond 49%, despite a single goal in his last eight appearances.

Aside from Liverpool and Swansea assets, then, Moussa Sissoko is by far the most popular transfer in. Over 74,000 have snapped up the Newcastle new boy in light of two goals and an assist in his first couple of appearances; a 6.0 price tag looks set to escalate soon. Christian Benteke is also generating plenty interest following his Goodison brace – the Villa forward has received almost 60,000 transfers in, while Rickie Lambert, Lukas Podolski and Adam Le Fondre have made their way into 20,000+ teams this week. In midfield, big hitters such as Juan Mata, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale have all earned 12,000+ new owners, as has Marouane Fellaini after his double against Villa.

In terms of transfers out, Demba Ba is again suffering. While the broken nose sustained at former club Newcastle has undoubtedly contributed, the lack of consistent game time under Rafa Benitez has persuaded over 126,000 to pull the plug – Ba has dropped to 8.2 from 8.9 in Gameweek 23. Elsewhere, injured north London pair Jermain Defoe and Kieran Gibbs have been transferred out by 55,000 and 31,000 respectively, while Santi Cazorla has been given the elbow by over 40,000 as midfields are reshaped.

Carlos Tevez has been moved on by over 37,000 after he dropped to the bench last weekend, while Robin Van Persie’s back-to-back blanks have seen over 27,000 give up on the Dutchman. Strangely, both Fellaini and Walcott have been given the elbow by over 22,000 Fantasy managers despite their recent exploits, though the strangest trades out involve Michu – over 23,000 have parted company with the Spaniard ahead of Swansea’s double Gameweek.

I don't like this whole half profit thing with purchase/selling prices. If Chelsea/Everton/Arsenal have a blank GW I'll have to sell Mata for a week purely because I'd lose too much on Fellaini/Walcott..having already lost 0.5 on Mata earlier in the season when it looked like he'd be rotated too much until I got him back 3 GW's later. At least it makes the game more challenging, but damn.

I hate DGWs. In the Chelsea one I went Ba over Mata because it was a hassle getting Mata. In Sunderland one I went Fletcher over Sess because it was a hassle getting Fletch. Now I got both Suarez and Sturridge and I'll probably pick the wrong one again 😀

    Sissoko price rise

So Fiso has no transfer in and his name blacked out
Presuming as he has only just signed ,...so invites a couple of questions

When will be 'opened' up to start price rising / dropping ?

And from that date will he start from 0 transfers ...or will the 75k odd he had apparently got in all count instantly , so he raises straight away ?

Am getting next week (all being well) for De Guzman

I believe his price is held at it's original starting point for ten days from when he was added to the FPL site. (This would end any day now presumably.)

His NTI will start at zero at that point. So all the transfers to this point will not count. Expect the first rise to be Sunday or Monday night.

Check Game Status, it will show you the deadline times for each day of the GW. Either they end this one as normal and start the next one early or they extend this one.

Inspired by AB and Dogba on the last post, this post looks at how Sturridge has affected Suarez and Gerrard's goal involvement...

Last 11 goals before Sturridge was in the team:

    Gerrard - 7 (2G, 5A)
    Suarez - 7 (5G, 2A)

First 10 goals with Sturridge in the team:

    Sturridge - 4 (3G, 1A)
    Gerrard - 4 (2G, 2A)
    Suarez - 2 (2G, 0A)

With Sturridge chipping in with his fair share of goals, there's no doubt that both players have suffered a reduction in attacking output, but it is quite clear that Suarez is the most affected here...

I'm still convinced, even though the stats don't yet suggest it, that Gerrard and Suarez will have increased assist potential with Sturridge in the team... although I am slightly concerned about Suarez' goal threat... having been reduced from 412, in the 4 games before Sturridge, to 228 in the 4 games since Sturridge has been playing... a quick look at the comparison between those weeks shows quite a disparity...

With an eye on these stats, I feel a little more comfortable with my Gerrard (c) punt...

I know people will disagree, but since Sturridge has come in there is no doubt in my mind Stevie G has been playing deeper, in favour of either Suarez as per Norwich/City or Henderson in the Arsenal game. Yes, I know he's been chipping in with the points still, and he still will with set-pieces and penalties, but I don't expect him to keep up what he's been doing.
Just my opinion of course. Sturridge/Suarez over Gerrard for (c) I reckon.

Thing with Gerrard is he has a quality quality shot on him. So he will require lesser chances.
Also, these two games in particular, i see both SWA and WBA sitting deep. Which means lesser counter attacks. Which means 4-5 liverool players + the full backs attacking. Points could very easily be split amongst all the players.

I see potential early goals for Liverpool, meaning the other team will have to push up. On all set pieces Sturridge will typically be the one left up top, much more likely to be involved on any counter-attack than Gerrard and Suarez.

I agree that if the other teams drop deep and Liverpool have to start grinding, it's likely that goals and assist will be split broadly.

I have a shit rank this year, so I think there is more to be gained from a successful Gerrard (c) punt, than a Suarez (c) pick...

Obviously, it could go wrong and I could drop further with the greater % of Suarez ownership, but even if Gerrard doesn't go mental, I still think he'll return something... I can't see Suarez going mental with Sturridge in the team, since he's has 4 games to so it, and it hasn't happened... (obviously the tougher fixtures have to be considered here, but still)

The advantage we all have is that any goal Suarez scores will often involve an assist from Sturridge or Gerrard. It's the same vice versa, so no one will go empty handed over the 2 games.

Fantastic analysis Zep, appreciate the effort there lad! I reckon Pool are a more rounded side with Sturridge, gives them depth and I think any team with multiple regular goal scorers is better off. Look at Spurs... Gareth or nothing, and that hurts

This was my intention, create some debate around it. Great post Zep. I changed my captain to Sturridge half an hour ago, after comparing Suarez and Sturr's stats since Sturr arrived. Will see if I dare to stick with it.

I really like that he's guaranteed not to travel or be in involved with Europa in any way. Both the stats, and IMO from watching the games, he's looked more threatning than Suarez.

Having gone for the expensive options, I'm hoping that Sturridge has a relatively quiet game...

In terms of value and Pts per pound, though, I imagine he will outscore both Suarez and Gerrard...

    Current team for DGW.

    3.4 banked & 1FT

    Bego
    Azpil Zaba Davies
    Michu Felaini Walcott Mata
    RVP Suarez Sturidge

Currently going with the cautious approach for now and carrying 2FT’s in to GW27, but I can’t stop getting drawn in by the temptation to do Felaini>Gerrard or Azpil>Johnson.

Thoughts? Do I stick with my current team or punt on another DGW’er?

Sanity check peoples for my team for the weekend:

    Bego (Andersen)
    Zabaleta Rafael Davies* (Dawson Pearce)
    Michu*(vc) Mata Walcott Felliani (Guthrie)
    RVP Suarez*(c) Sturridge*

    1FT. 3.4m in the bank.

4 DGW players seems plenty. Anyone who has both going Studge over Suarez for cpt?

The vc seems abit redundant this week if I go Suarez, less so with Sturridge as cpt if he misses both gmaes through injury.

        Cheers LTR12.

Yeah, for me it's Studge if you're chasing a lead, and Suarez for safety if you're generally sitting pretty in your ML's.

Plus having both players is kinda no-lose situation anyway, with the price rises an added bonus when I sell one next week for Aguero.

        +1

Power 5ers are profiting right now, but if another mid priced striker gets going it'll be tough.

That being said, right now Bale is probably more essential than Michu after DGW

Its Swansea's form more than Michu. Laudrup will obviously have noticed the goals not coming in. They still are a quality team. I fancy them to turn the corner. If they do, keep.

There aren't many better OOP players in the league. He's scored 13 goals.

Things change, don't cling onto old cliches. In that price range, do you really think he will pick up the most points? Fellaini or Sissoko/Barfa will get more imo.

      I've thought about this too, but look at the fixtures;

*blank* NEW wba ARS TOT nor wig SOT che MCI mun FUL

There's not really a run of good fixtures there that will make you think "I have to get Michu back for the next few weeks"

nor wig SOT looks good on paper but Swansea have 2 goals in their last 6 away games (the game Michu happened to miss) and that includes games against Fulham, West Ham and Reading who ship goals most weeks, and even Sunderland/Everton who aren't all that defensively.

Funnily enough, I don't think it depends on who they play, I think it depends on how they play... if you get my meaning...

He will score more goals, I just don't think he will score enough to justify his price tag... (even if you bought him at 6.5)

    ROONEY vs RVP Debate...

Pros and Cons of owning Rooney:

    Pros:

    -Price difference
Money saved can be spent upgrading other areas of your team. Typically 4th, 5th mids, and 2nd, 3rd defenders. The difference between 4.5m, and 6.0m players in these positions is worth a lot of points.

    -Rotation (lack thereof)
With the number of games Rooney has missed already this season, he is unlikely to be rotated. This being confirmed by Fergie who states that Wayne needs to play in every game.
With Utd still in the Champs League, RVP could be benched for the odd game with midweek European fixtures returning.

    -Positioning
Although Rooney is playing SLIGHTLY deeper than RVP, this often means he is able to pick up the ball in more space, with defenders reluctant to be dragged out of position to close him down, and fear leaving space for RVP to exploit.

    -History/Pedigree
When given the chances, Rooney is a prolific goalscorer! He has delivered season after season for Utd, especially in tough fixtures, evidenced by his brace against Man City earlier in the campaign.

How does this team look for the long term after the DGW? I'm sick of City and Silva (in my team atm).

    Team (Nothing in bank):

Mignolet, Cerny (Don't like rotating keepers)

Davies, Zaba, Evra, Samba, Dawson/Cuellar/Pearce (depending on money)

    Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, Bale, Kebe

    Cisse, Rooney, Sturridge
