A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Alex Vidal Schmelzer Alba Demichelis
    Isco Reus Lucho Kroos Feghouli
    Messi Ibra Ronaldo

Any thoughts on my UCL team? Any obvious blunders with regards to players that won't play/be benched etc.?

Doing pretty well so would really appreciated your views.

If you want to make it perfect, ditch the Barca players for Milan 😉

Unnerstall possibly won't play, and even if, Shcalke's defense has been atrocious.

Alex is sure to play next game but someday he might be replace when Silva returns (and Sakho is the second centreback).

Feghouli seems like a strange choice. He rarely scores, and Valencia is very probably out in two matches.

I think Maxwell is the safest bet right now. He can play some attack, too.

I don't play UEFA Fantasy (the site was down so many times, it annoyed me), but I'd play something like this:

          - Bayern players as the strongest option not called "Messi", but it's harder to point out the possible scorers, so maybe go with the defence, Alaba's been fantastic

          - Cristiano should score a lot, less sure about Van Persie

          - Galata has great chance to score on Schalke, but harder to tell who will score - Burak's the best bet. Also, Schalke is weak in attack as well, could be kept to clean sheet even I think.

          - PSG will go through easily, with clean sheets very possible, Sirigu can get save points

          - Borussia-Donetsk, here I think there will be goals. Dortmund looked very tired in the last game and I doubt they can keep it zero at the back, Mkhitaryan a great choice. For Dortmund, Lewandowski is surely the best bet, in the midfield - Goetze.

          - Celtic-Juve, I don't know.

          - Jackson Martinez is another fantastic pick with Malaga's current defensive problems. The guy scores every game, and Porto should go through to 1/4.

Agree on Unnerstall. Hildebrand has played the last 7 since his return from injury. Good chance he'll stay in goal, but Schalke's form is awful: last 10 leagues games read 1-3-6 (W-D-L). Galatasaray with a good chance of success in that tie.

    Bego (fed)
Demel r Martin clyne zab (Davies)
Walcott (c) bale mata puncheon (Gerrard)
    Lambert RVP (Suarez)

Tempted to do Gerrard to sissoko and would leave 4.2m in bank with 4 point hit, will hold off until nearer deadline? Or fellaini one week punt at Norwich?

    Gonna repost this one :
The ironic thing about all today's blab about the Pope resigning before Roman pushed him , Odemwinky arriving at the Vatican in Classic ' Arry style - " The Boy got mixed up , hes really a triffic lad
and the hilarious Sturridge Saga -it's just an international injury / will he pass fitness test ? / what are the tweets,Liverpool Echo saying / Did anyone talk to his mother / is he really driving a Hyundai ? And all that...
We forgot how Unreliable Liverpool are , why did we presume they would win this easy ? It's not like United here winning 21 from 26 , all GJ/Enrique/Gerrard/Henderson(lol)/ Suarez/Studgegate had to do was turn up - more like Graham Taylor style in fact - Turnips !
Tbf I can't say I heard anyone scouts/regulars/lateriser/JK/moi talk up West Brom,
Surely Captain Hindsight has seen it ? Dharma initiative seems to quiet all day and the regulars talked about how 100 was gonna be a 'Decent' score,
Luckily tho we have another bite at the Cherry and maybe Swansea will have an off day or Rodgers can enact a hair dryer episode - all we can do is wait and see.
Well done West Bromich Albion , I salute you and thank you for wrecking most on here game week thus far 😉

Can't see it, though a couple of wins and things can change quickly, the 3 teams above us are very poor also.

Am I right in thinking it was you that earlier today predicted a 2-0 West Brom win?

FPL has to be the most inaccurate injury predictor ever. 75% chance playing for STurridge. LOL

They had George Mccartney on 50% chance of playing for 3 weeks in a row before they red flagged him in december and he is still out till this day with no news on his return.

In short. They suck ar$se at predicting any injury with any remote accuracy and are lazy coonts

Well Sturridge was probably fit enough to play, but the risk of creating a bigger problem was too much of a risk. There are far more reliable places to check injury updates, for those who aren't lazy coonts!

    Rose with 2 points 😆

A point I'd like to make is that tonight is proof that people make predictions based on their FPL team. Liverpool not beaten a top 10 side all season but people expected a walkover.

Didn't watch the game tonight, was it more Liverpool missing chances, Foster brilliance or good defending that led to a CS for WBA?

Yacob and Mulumbu playing together again could lead to a return to the early season CS's maybe?

Suarez© was not in any way mitigated by my rival having Michu©. :(.

That's where the 120-point lead comes in handy, though. 🙂
