Liverpool fall flat in the first match of their double Gameweek after a smash-and-grab performance by West Brom at Anfield. Steven Gerrard misses a spot-kick, while Daniel Sturridge misses out entirely in a night to forget for the home side and Fantasy managers alike. Elsewhere, Hatem Ben Arfa could be set to return for Newcastle’s next league game, while Michu plays down fears of an ankle problem and insists he’ll be ready for next weekend.

Reds Attack Draws Blanks
With Daniel Sturridge ruled out with a thigh injury, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez carried the hopes of many heading into last night’s match. Gerrard had been acquired by over 160,000 Fantasy managers after scoring or assisting in 10 of his previous 12 and had racked up 45 points in his last four at Anfield. Suarez had been picked up by more than 146,000 after racking up 33 points in his last three home clashes – with both players transferred in for the likes of Gareth Bale and Robin Van Persie by many, plenty was riding on their displays. Gerrard fluffed the chance of producing points for both, missing a spot-kick late on after Suarez was felled in the box; a double blow for those who had both and left Gerrard without a single point. Fantasy owners of the pair can only take solace in their abovementioned form and hope the weekend won’t bring about another dire display in a double Gameweek that has the potential to go down as one of the biggest disappointments in memory.

Reds Defence Capitulates
Again, the same applies to Brendan Rodgers’ backline. Liverpool were subject to significant investment going into the weekend and with every reason, too – they had conceded four goals and registered seven clean sheets in their previous seven games at Anfield. With 10 minutes left on the clock, their backline looked like affording us the one crumb of comfort; Steve Clarke’s side didn’t have a single shot on target until Gareth McAuley opened the scoring with nine minutes remaining. Owners of the likes of Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique will be buoyed by the fact that Swansea have failed to score in five of their last six away matches, though given last night’s result, we clearly won’t be counting our chickens.

Baggies Resilience
With a single clean sheet in their previous 15, it’s fair to say that Fantasy faith in West Brom’s assets was hardly sky-high heading into last night’s match. Given that all five of their clean sheets had arrived at the Hawthorns, Clarke’s outfit seemed incapable of keeping out the Reds but thanks to the heroics of Ben Foster, they registered a crucial win to arrest a run of form which had harvested a single point in the previous six Gameweeks. While Foster’s spot-kick save and two bonus points helped deliver a 14 point FPL haul, Gareth McAuley’s second goal of the season earned the centre-half 15 points as the Baggies turned in a defiant display. With home games against Sunderland and Swansea in the next three, they’ll be hoping to maintain their winning ways.

Lukaku’s Consistency
A run of five straight starts came to an end for the giant Belgian as he dropped to the bench, with fit-again Shane Long leading the line once more. Lukaku highlighted his capabilities as a late sub, though, notching for the third time from the bench this season to take his tally to 10 goals overall. Lukaku has now scored or assisted in five of the last six, despite his side’s recent toils – although last night’s 17 minute cameo served a reminder of his potential for points from the bench, Lukaku has been far more reliable as part of the first XI. He has produced attacking returns in eight of his 11 starts – Long has produced in eight of his 17 starts by comparison.

In Other News
Newcastle are hoping to have both Yoan Gouffran and Hatem Ben Arfa back in contention for their Gameweek 27 home clash with Southampton on February 24. Scans on the former’s leg problem, sustained in the weekend loss at Spurs, have proved particularly optimistic, while his compatriot could also be set for a return, having played once since Gameweek 12 due to a hamstring injury. Speaking to the press yesterday, Alan Pardew revealed:

“You’d like to think with him (Gouffran) on one side, Ben Arfa on the other side and Sissoko and Cissé – blimey, that’s mouthwatering for us. I think there’s a possibility Hatem will be back for the next home game.”

Judging by Pardew’s comments, it also seems he plans to keeps Sissoko in the advanced central role that has harvested two assists and a couple of goals in his first three appearances. With a hugely enticing run of fixtures on the horizon including home games against Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland in the next eight, plenty of investment looks to be heading the Magpies’ way, with yesterday’s news merely boosting their potential as Pardew looks to engineer a climb up the table.

Michu has played down any fears over the ankle knock that forced him off towards the end of last weekend’s 4-1 win over QPR:

“I am feeling good right now. I had problems Monday, Tuesday and did not train – but I trained the rest of the week and was OK to play. I felt fine in the game but then with 10 minutes left I had a bang on my ankle. The game was finished so I asked to come off. There’s no problem it was just a precaution. It will not be a problem especially with Dubai to look forward to with good weather and a lot of sun; it will be good to relax, to train and to think about Liverpool and Wembley.”

With another five days before Swansea’s trip to Anfield, the Spaniard certainly has plenty of time to recuperate before another week-long rest take him to the Capital One Cup Final against Bradford. Given Liverpool’s display last night, his Fantasy owners will be confident of further points to come in the Gameweek as Michu looks to add to his current 18 point tally next Sunday afternoon.

        Very nice.
Have siad before I'm not sure of Feghouli after ACON exploits, but he should start anyway (played 90 vs Celta) and racked up the points before.

Yilmaz is a cracker. I'm still eying up that move (currently Ibra), as I can't see Drogba in from the start having only arrived this week. Yilmaz on fire for Gala - and Schalke is woeful form. As a result I'd look to replace Howedes. He isn't scoring pens every week, so I'd take the money and run. Maybe push Huntelaar up the price bracket with the funds of a cheap defender (I've gone for Mangala and Nounkeu, boht 4.0m)

Anyone think that ultimately the FPL haven't got the prices quite right this year?

This was the year they went for big prices for the strikers; RVP, Aguero, Rooney the only ones well over 10 million, where in previous years players like Fabregas and Lampard would have been there as well.

And then with the exception of RVP all the top scoring players in the game are midfielders. Discuss.

      no
theres very few bargains, and very few constant bandwagons - only Michu and Van Persie
the prices are almost SO right, that indentkit teams could be seen from around GW7-8 - very early

and the only strikers starting on over 10.0 were Aguero, Rooney and RVP - and those have all still got serious investment in them

you could argue its Premier League managers playing only 1 up front pretty much across the board that makes the mids out wide and in the hole more attractive

Identikit teams are a sign things HAVEN'T gone quite right, aren't they? The unrealisable dream situation is that EVERY player will be an option because they're at an intriguing price.

The thing is, I thought they were great when I first saw them because I thought RVP, Rooney and Aguero were the clear best options, so I would have made the mistake as well.

price rise depends on FPL managers, not on FPL itself. If many mangers buy a certain player, he will rise. It's just as simple as that imo. 😀
For example, even though Lambert is third highest scorer, not many people brought him in so his price did not rise enough.

All defenders prices have to be reduced next season unless they change the scoring rules. When they developed the scoring 7 years ago, there were far more clean sheets than there are today and each year it seems it's got worse.

I seriously think they should develop the game further than just rewarding goals, assists and cleanies. There are other areas of the game which they almost completely ignore, tackles, clearances, passes etc. Generating points for those attributes would go a long way to differentiating between players.

Agree with this entirely. The recovered balls in UCL (and other games) has really brough more options into play.

I'd back the half score bench points from the ACON game too.

It's very much captain hinsight of course, but the big decision was to reduce prices across the board for midfielders compared to previous years, and now we have a situation where all the midfielders seem good value is comparison with strikers.

You could increase the mids by a million each, or reduce the strikers by a million each, and it would get more interesting.

Thought they were good when I first saw them though, so I'm not being too critical.

Tactically the FPL formation doesnt match what we see in the Premier League
          75% managers playing 4-2-3-1

This means that there are less starting strikers to pick from and very few nailed on with good form and a good team behind them - hence why RVP has almost 50% ownership

Actually I'd say that they brought the variance of player prices down, particularly midfielders and strikers. As a result, players became more interchangeable instead of having such well defined brackets, and as a result I think there's been more variability in teams (less identikit teams).

Bayern attacking dilemma on my mind (UCL):

Does it make sense to take Gomez in my team? I know that Mandzukic and Muller are playing the majority of games now, but Gomez was injured, the weekend game was his 1st full game since return. He scored and assisted. He is proven UCL player (was stuck with Mandzukic throughout the group stage and he did absolutely nothing).

So, do you think Gomez is the prefered choice for next week or should i gamble with Muller (maybe even Kroos, but he's also been quiet lately and everybody has him).

    Thanks.

I wouldnt take Gomez. Mandzukic has been a 1st choice so far, but with Gomez back it may be a Ba-Torres kind of issue. If you dont want to gamble, from FCB consider Muller, Kroos, Alaba, Ribery.

Whatever double gameweeks come up after the 29 blank I guess. If I'm really lucky there'll be two in a row because a extra wildcard has so much value in that situation.

Then it'll be a team of differentials for death or glory until the finish.

The thing is, I can get away with slightly dodgy cheap defenders, because my other defenders are Baines, Azpil and Enrique. You don't have that luxury.

But I would still advise that you hold tight, and use it on the doubles. This is the one where we'll be able to get more/different double gameweekers to other people at the top.

Although it might seem a good idea to use your WC, have a look at the others around you - are they in a similar position - loads of non-players for GW27. If so, then maybe you can hold off with your WC. How ambitious are you - are you going to go all out for victory or opt for a safer, more conservative approach?f

For those of you still doing Champions League gubbins, neither Kevin Großkreutz nor İlkay Gündogan flew out with the Dortmund squad to the Ukraine for the Donetsk match.

Contrary to reports yesterday, Marcel Schmelzer should be fit to play on Wednesday according to Jürgen Klopp, and Neven Subotić is also a candidate to start in defence after recovering from a muscle tear.

Liverpool's combined 16-point haul from their players last night doesn't even make the top 15 lowest points hauls this season.

It is however their joint lowest points haul of the season, matching their Gameweek 1 loss (coincidentally also against West Brom).

The lowest combined points haul by a team this season is 9 points, shared jointly by Fulham (away to Liverpool in gameweek 18) and Stoke (home v Chelsea in gameweek 22). Both games were lost 4-0.

Anyone going with Sneijder and/or Drogs? Really tempting, Schalke looked horrible at the weekend...

Great price. Galatasaray are a dark horse this year. Noone wants an away tie in Istanbul and they have real quality in their side.

Schalke missed loads of players through injury with Huntelaar, Afellay to name a few.
      Farfan suffered jet-lag.
