[sbu_large_image] Suspensions

A raft of weekend bookings saw as many as five Premier League protagonists clamber onto the Suspension Tightrope after receiving their ninth caution of the campaign. One more yellow for any of our quintet triggers an automatic two-match ban now – bearing in mind the curfew is up to and including the Sunday April 14 (Gameweek 33), there’s every chance at least a couple could succumb to suspension.

The five guilty parties are Marouane Fellaini, David Luiz, Gary Caldwell, Craig Gardner and Matthew Lowton, with the first two the obvious concern for Fantasy managers. With Everton looking forward to a double Gameweek 33 (QPR, ars), Fellaini will be a clear target for investment but, in order to avoid the ban, has to engineer four league matches without falling foul of the referee – a Gameweek 31 home clash with Stoke, where he comes face to face with Ryan Shawcross once again, is likely to test his temperament. The frustrating thing for those looking to draft him in for the double is that even if Fellaini manages to go the next three without receiving a yellow, a booking in the first match of the double (at home to QPR on Saturday April 13) would take him over the 10-card limit and leave him unavailable for the second match of the Gameweek, away to Arsenal three days later.

Luiz will potentially teeter on the Tightrope for five games. The Chelsea defender currently has four league games and an FA Cup Sixth Round replay against United also set to take place before Gameweek 33 – depending on the result of that match, he will subsequently have either three league fixtures and a Semi-Final on his agenda or four league games, should United knock the Blues out. There’s also the somewhat unlikely scenario of a sixth game, though. If Rafa Benitez’s side are knocked out of both the FA Cup and Europa League, the Premier League could theoretically reschedule their trip to Fulham, initially set for last weekend, to a date prior to Gameweek 33.

While Gardner, Lowton and Caldwell all have four games apiece before the deadline, the latter could have five matches to prevail. Wigan’s trip to City, initially scheduled for Gameweek 29, has yet to be given a new date – although both sides are through to the Semi-Finals, City’s lack of European action may yet see the match take place before Gameweek 33, affording both clubs a double and adding an extra fixture for Caldwell to navigate.

In terms of those already on the sidelines, both Pavel Pogrebnyak and Robert Huth are set to serve the last of their respective three-match bans for serious foul play and violent conduct respectively, this weekend. Villa’s Fabian Delph sits out the second of a two-match ban – he was the first player to break through the 10 card barrier earlier this month.

It seems this forum just can't stomach a little imagination. Nor can the status quo be challenged too far without the brave challenger getting shot down.

Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
    Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!

I know many won't agree with Rooney over RVP and to be honest I don't really want them too as I'm taking a massive risk and the less people that follow the better off I'll be if it works. I guess thats why most people post when they plan to go against the grain. They want some kinda confirmation that its not too crazy.

      Brave challenger 🙄

There's nothing wrong with your argument, just the way you framed it.

There's not doubt you have a point that Rooney's performance has been better than RVPs but you can't just conveniently pretend that RVP didn't score 10 goals in 10 games previous to your sample range of 5 games (along with 4 assists and a hat-full of bonus points).

He scored those goals without Rooney. RVP's PPG does drop when Rooney plays, that's a fact.

        Did I pretend? No

Did I say 'Imagine this'? Yes

I implied you should use your imagination and ask yourself, if this was the first 5 games of the season, who would look like the better option?

And I think you'd find if it was then a lot would be singing Rooney's praises right now and considering him very seriously. Instead there is this pack mentality of 'well, yeah but RVP is a no brainer!!!!!'

It's not a no brainer, in fact it's quite an interesting dilemma, which is the better option right now?

I framed it that way because I thought it would be interesting and spark a bit of a discussion. Instead I just get shot down by yourself and others with 'this is a ridiculous post/this makes no sense' etc

I think you'll find my comments about it being pointless/making no sense etc. were tongue in cheek (I hope the winks conveyed this.)

My point still stands about the sample size.

Whether or not Rooney is a better option for the next 5 isn't what I was getting at.

My personal opinion is that, given the same game-time, they will score similarly well and I would be happy owning either.

I understand you wanna get a discussion but its obv now that most are not interested and have already made their minds up on RVP which is better for us who are looking to get Rooney.

A model which is use quite often tells me they should be close for the next 8 weeks( it assumes they will both see similar mins) and the price difference will allow much better upgrades in my team. For this is the no brainer.

By the way I just ran the stats for GW24-28 and RVP had 2 more shots on target with slightly less game-time. Rooney managed more shots in the box though.

So not only is your argument badly framed but based on poor foundations.

I wish you the best of luck with Rooney. I'll be keeping RVP myself and will be hoping he can continue his good goal threat, which will hopefully convert into FPL returns.

It's obviously a risk ... but what will the score be? They might win 4-1, and RVP, Rooney, Giggs and Welbeck might get the goals. I'm only really fearing 8-0 and an RVP haul.

That said, it's not even guaranteed to be 4. We all thought Man City v Reading would be a cricket score too.

My point exactly CS. I'd rather avoid the fixture and the forthcoming blank.

People go wild with predictions when it's a top v bottom clash, I remember last season, people went crazy doubling up on Aguero and Tevez against Wolves, and that only ended 2-0 as well.

Top v bottom clashes are rarely goalfests. Reading aren't idiots, they know that they have to set their stall out to defend. Granted, they're not the best defence around to do this, but I'd predict a 2-0 over an 8-0.

Before anyone thinks I'm crazy, of course I'd like to have RVP or Rooney at home to Reading. But if I can think of a better long term plan, then I might just do it.

Another argument is that there are other players in form, who have a good fixture, who can get just as many points, especially as a captain choice.

So the quarter final replay is pencilled in for 2nd April

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/chelsea-face-three-matches-five-1757131

Chelsea may ask for the Southampton game to be postponed, but there is no guarantee that request - likely to be opposed by the relegation-fighting Saints - would be approved.

This is what I've been saying. The Boro Chelsea potential replay was similarly penned to fit between the PL weekend and Thursday EL games.

Can't they ask PL to move the sot game to Saturday, giving them an extra rest day?

They could do, but it's due to be televised. I don't imagine they'll be happy that United would have an extra day between the games.

Makes it sound like they are all suffering battle fatigue after two years of war ffs.

Use some of the rest of the squad for the Sunderland game. There you go, that wasn't too onerous a problem to sort out.

Because Chelsea played the Super Cup, the games in Japan, didn't get through their CL group and have to play an extra round in the Europa League. All this compounded by their progress in the FA Cup and now their 2nd replay.

Chelsea could have played 70 competitive games by the end of this season. Crazy.

Not to mention the internationals, and a mid-season tournament for Mikel and Moses.

They don't have a very big squad really, I think they only have 20 players. They will have to rotate loads and it totally puts me off their players.

When you consider that Marin and Bertrand will probably have to be played in midfield at some point, it doesn't show much strength in depth. Having said that, it might be worth holding on to Bertrand, I sense he could even get a game on Saturday for me.

    D) Any others

For the Villa nah. Only the big games generate an atmosphere these days. The others just have too many day trippers who don't sing. OT has lost it's soul sadly. The derby will be different though. Have you been to OT before?

I remember when Villa were challenging us for the league. The atmosphere at Old Trafford that day was amazing. I can't remember who scored for us that day, but I remember their equalizer, a rocket shot from Staunton which I was right behind.
