There was a major shock in the Members Cup Fourth Round last weekend, as world number 15 and site regular Evs tasted defeat at the hand of Rodallega Bombs. His conqueror has form, though, and sits just inside the top 1500 so far this term. Elsewhere, former winner Fuzzy Dunlop is still in the mix after winning 62-54, Diz was the round’s highest scorer with 72 points earning him a place inside the top 500 overall, while Paul continues to fly the flag for the Contributors. We’re sorting out the draw for the last 32 behind the scenes and should have that with you tomorrow..

Okay, been busy all day, so only just managed to work out what the DGW announcements mean.

So basically, as far as I can tell, we are all hoping for Chelsea to beat United on April Fools Day and then we can wreck the rest of our team to get a front 3 of Rooney-RVP-Suarez.

    Right?

Keepers are judged on their mistakes though, at least Chez is still young. Needs to work on his concentration.

Back line was strangely good tonight.

So Arsenal go and beat Bayern Munich 2-0. Do they really not even deserve extra-time?

It's about time they scrapped the away goal rule. It often has the opposite effect of what it was it was originally brought in for anyway. Encourages cautionary defending by the home side.

yes I did. Nothing to do with Arsenal really. United have gone out by this rule many times before.

It's a nonsense, based on the way European ties used to be. It's original premise is outdated.

This is a common misconception. Why not give rewards to the team that performs great at home. It often has the opposite effect and makes the home team not take any risks. It's an absurd distortion. Why should making a mistake at home cost more than making the same mistake away?

It depends on the context. Arsenal's performance from a seemingly impossible situation was more impressive than Bayern's performance at the Emirates where the pressure was off.

But you can't just reward teams for being impressive can you? I understand it was sad that Arsenal got nothing for that performance...but you see it time and again, teams achieving success without looking like they really deserve it.

My opinions on this were formed long ago. Whenever I hear the same old arguments about it providing more exciting football, I can make the counter point with examples of games where the opposite has happened.

Removing players from either side every 5 minutes during extra time. Now that is team football, which penalties is not, and the best side will often win.

But I think Bayern were the best side, that's the problem. Arsenal were the best side on one night, tonight. But even then they were pretty dominated all game and Bayern probably would have stepped it up if they actually needed to.

It's not about tonight, it's about every time a team is faced with a situation where they effectively concede two goals if they concede one, and the strange idea that some goals are worth more than other.

We can't say that Arsenal would have gone through if this rule was not there because the premise would have been completely different from the start of leg one.

Think about it, don't you think it's strange to say that some goals matter more than other ones? I'm sure if someone suggested that goals scored in the last 10 minutes of every game weighed more than normal goals we'd find it mental.

The away goal rule was invented to tackle a certain problem, and to me it is highly debatable whether that problem is still big enough to have games decided by anything else than by most goals scored.

I have thought about it. It is where the term "Home Advantage" comes from...because there is one. Everyone in the sport knows this. If you score away from home then that counts for plenty and the away goal rule recognizes that.

After tonight's game you do wish there wasn't such a thing as away goals.

However I do still like to believe the away goals rule adds an incentive for teams to go all out across both legs. Away goals AET should obviously be scrapped though.

By offering a big reward such as an away goal, that would count double, it often has the opposite effect, in that it makes the side who can give one away get all defensive, to avoid it happening.

Almost the same as the 'golden goal' rule. Massive incentive to score, but teams were so frightened of giving one away that it ultimately led to defensive play.

I totally agree! seems unfair that a team can equal the other team's score over the two legs but still lose. even more absurd is in the case of two ties like galatasaray's situation

I'd prefer it if there was no European or International football.

Both are strewn with desperately poor refereeing and gamesmanship (cheating), to the extent that watching it is excruciatingly BORING.

The only football worth watching is British club football.
      (and that ain't saying much 🙂 )

I know it's early, but supposing that United do have a DGW, what cover would we all go for?

I think Arsenal's DGW looks to be the more profitable to be honest, and I'm thinking of doing Mata > Santi sometime soon.

As much as I hate to see him go, I don't enjoy nervously waiting for Chelsea teamsheets and it's only gonna get worse.

Right to be worried but I'd say Chez will be back against Swansea at least. You'd imagine Vermaelen too...but it was an interesting call by Wenger...he obviously pin pointed some weaknesses in the side. And to get a CS in Munich is pretty admirable. Kosc had a good game...looked way more assured than Verm has.

Koscielny has always been our best CB, i don't understand why Wenger has dropped him this season, maybe because he has less of a reputation than Per & Vermaelen. When Koscielny plays regularly, there aren't many better, yes he makes the odd clanger, but in general, is is top class.

I guess so. Vaguely remember him saying it was a WC or an 8 point hit but even so, the potential upside of a DGW WC are so big i'd have been tempted to save it.

Saying that the DGW situation seems to be very much up in the air at the moment, perhaps that played some part in his decision

    Ahh.. Now what?

    Szez, (Federici)

Clark, Johnson, Davies, Martin, ( Demel)

    Walcott, Fellaini, (Ramirez) Bale, Sissoko,

    Suarez, Uncle Fletch, (Sturridge)

    3.7 in account.
Could replace Suarez with RvP but lately Suarez has been amazing..
    Would like to upgrade defence..

What would you do with this lot?
Had a good week last and want to keep it going

    With a few pre-planning financial transfers;

    Coutinho - Guthrie
    Debucey - Jenkinson
    NZog - Cazorla

    My GW33 Squad will be;

    Beg
    Jenkinson - J.Enrique - Dawson
    Cazorla - Walcott - Bale - Sissoko
    RVP - Rooney - Suarez

    Pretty tasty!

Not the best bench if anyone is injured or rested 😉

Besides, United might get through to the FA Cup semi yet, and then it's not worth doubling up on their strikers.

Just watched some YouTube clips and wondering about "the great comeback" of each team. May you please suggest your own favourite? I'd start with my own .. UCL 2005 Final for Liverpool.

I can think of Newcastle 4-4, but not sure if Toon fans have other more favourite.

Also, United vs Bayern in my memory. What's yours?

Yeah, Fulham had a great run, beating Juve was the highlight for them, if I remember.

Steve McLaren just decided to play with 4 strikers for an hour - Viduka, Hasselbaink, Yakubu and Maccarone. Amazingly, it worked. Twice.

Coming back from 0-4 at the San Siro, playing almost the whole game with 10 men - to claim a 3-4 from a Bale hat trick. We didn't win, but by the time Inter Milan came around to WHL, they were petrified.

😀 Yes - Big bucks on offense & mids, and bare cupboard at D and keep. I felt that this strategy would earn me maximum points, but may be wrong.

Hence, the reason to ask all of you FPL vets.

Well, it's not the way that I would go, but then I guess it might pay off! All it takes it a Fellaini suspension and Mata to be rested and you're looking at having to play Britton and Mariappa though.

It's just getting to the point of being ridiculous now. And for instance, it might not be worth planning to get players in who have a DGW, because at this rate, everyone might be playing twice in GW36!
