United extend the gap over City to 15 points but Reading limit the league leaders to a solitary Wayne Rooney strike at Old Trafford. Rotation at the back and another blank from Robin Van Persie leaves most Fantasy managers frustrated, though:

On the Up

Wayne Rooney
An avalanche of goals was expected this evening but it was down to the former Everton man to prove the difference. Rooney took his tally to five in the last six and with a couple of assists also thrown in over that period, he’s proving key to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side at a time where many other attacking options are failing to flourish.

David De Gea
While Sir Alex Ferguson made changes aplenty in the back-four, the Spaniard was handed a fourteenth successive start as United made it five clean sheets on the spin. Drafted in by almost 30,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers last week, De Gea’s consistency of game time looks set to keep the bandwagon rolling over the international break.

Going Down

Robin Van Persie
Saturday’s results were bad enough from a Fantasy perspective before this evening’s match at Old Trafford. Van Persie was heavily backed to deliver but his poor form continued with another blank stretching his run to a single goal in six – runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll and most captained in the FPL game, his failure could prove significant in many a mini league if the likes of Gareth Bale or Juan Mata can produce tomorrow.

Ian Harte
The left-back dropped to the bench for this evening’s visit to Old Trafford, ending a run of 12 consecutive starts for the Royals. While it’s likely that Reading will have a new manager in place by the time they travel to Arsenal in a fortnight’s time, his omission will be a concern, with Nicky Shorey looking back in the mix again.

Adam Le Fondre
Again, it’s perhaps misleading to look too much into Reading’s line-up, with Eamonn Dolan surely set to step aside for a full-time boss before the end of the international break. Despite scoring twice the number of goals than any Royals team mate this season, Le Fondre was afforded just 20 minutes off the bench at Old Trafford as Noel Hunt led the line. With Pavel Pogrebnyak now set to return from a three-game suspension, his chances of securing a regular role look further diminished.

United Back-Four Rotation
Ferguson’s decision to freshen up his back-four proved hugely frustrating to Fantasy managers. Only one player – Nemanja Vidic – kept his place from the side that line up against Norwich in the previous Gameweek; all the more annoying given the Red Devils delivered yet another clean sheet. It remains to be seen just how much more tinkering is on the cards but when the likes of Patrice Evra is rested to the bench for just the second time this term, it’s clear Ferguson has no qualms in utilising his squad options at the back.

The Bap Chap Bonus Predictions

Re-produced with kind permission from the man himself…

Villa 3 QPR 2 – Weimann 3, Agbonlahor 2, Jenas 1 (in the mix Benteke, Lowton)
Southampton 3 Liverpool 1 – Lambert 3, Rodriguez 2, Schneiderlin 1
Stoke 0 West Brom 0 – Odemwingie 3, N’Zonzi 2, Ridgewell 1 (in the mix Shawcross)
Swansea 0 Arsenal 2 – Monreal 3, Gervinho 2, Jenkinson 1 (in the mix Cazorla)
Everton 2 Man City 0 – Osman 3, Fellaini 2, Mucha 1 (in the mix Baines, Coleman)
Man United 1 Reading 0 – Rooney 3, Ferdinand 2, Giggs 1 (in the mix Smalling)

I know it's not gonna happen but please Mr O'Neill is it ok for Carlos to play tomorrow. Since his last game you've only had 2 cleanies in 9 matches, those being home to those away powers of Swansea and W.Ham

    Thanks. Hope you. Ffs regular.

RVP is overrated, I'm not saying he's a bad player but when it came for him to perform he failed against Real and for Holland not to mention infront of goal against Milan last yr.

He'll score in most teams but for Man Utd he doesn't suit their style or play. He's scored all those goals for them but I've watched all the games he's played and he looks out of place. He suits fluent attacking sides like Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool much more.

People will say he's the difference this yr but I don't agree, an Utd would still be infront of City if they didn't have him, City have lacked the fight this yr to go back to back.

the defending has been shocking for a while atleast 3-4 seasons now why do you think they do poorly in europe. all the top teams defenders are ageing and near the end of the careers and havent been replaced thats why.

they have, suarez has 20, ageuro citys other stikers could hit 20 also, the others play in lesser teams so get less chances.

Highest city striker this season is dzeko with 12....be very surprised if any of them hit 20.

                  2010/11- berba, tevez- 20, Rvp-18
                  2011/12- Rvp-30, Rooney-27, aguero- 23
                  12/13- Suarez-22, Rvp-19

So you think Premier League sides perform poorly in Europe. They've had 8 CL finalists in 8 years, that's 5 more than Spain.

Without his goals we would not be where we are. It's his first season and he's still got a chance at Golden Boot, give the guy a break, most players need time to adjust to different systems, look at Kagawa, amazing for Dortmund and still look's out of place half the time.

Other than the obvious ones in Spain, which other strikers are in his league. There isn't one that is nearly as potent in front of goal that i can think of. So which is this available younger striker you are talking about?

I was always in Team Rooney but i still think RVP will get some decent scores over the next few weeks. Although he has only scored 1 in 6, he has gotten assists and baps. I don't think he's worth the price tag myself but his quality will get you points. No need to knee-jerk.

Rooney, however, has returned an impressive amount since he came back from injury. And even in a game where United struggled to break down Reading, he still continued his rich vein of scoring. He is still a great option. The Reading game will put people off United players, but they will be back next week, they always are. It's one gameweek.

I personally think he's playing CF. He said he wanted to set more goals up in one of his United interviews. Its a perfect role since he can dart forward or hit them long range too. But personally I reckon he'll rake in the assists now

Agreed. I am glad I got in Rooney, but I don't think that suddenly he is better than RVP. I think he is a legitimate alternative, but both will score points. Just happy it worked out this week!

One thing negative about rvp is he is not explosive.

He is consistent (in getting pts - well he was) but rarely do I expect a massive haul.

I noticed this season United are a different proposition. They no longer hammer the mid-table/relegation threatended teams like they used to. When they do score lots of goals it is usually in high scoring games where they win 3-2 or 4-3. I remember a united side being ruthless in finishing off mid-table and relegation struggling teams, 4-0, 5-0 was not a rare site v the likes of sunderland/fulham/west brom/ west ham.

This season united have struggled to really make a difference v these teams.

Yeah Ferguson actually said in a presser or interview that he's disappointed United have not been able to kill more games off earlier. That was one reason why I expected this to be a rout today.

Regarding the first point though, that's just viewing it from a different angle. When players get massive hauls mixed with lots of blanks we can say that is a negative too.

There are only 7 mids and strikers this gw that scored more than 6 points each.
Their COMBINED ownership is less than 10% with only shneiderlin reaching the heights of 4% - others much less.
The two highest scoring defenders are owned by 1.9% and 2.7%.
The highest scoring gk so far this gamewek is owned exclusively by his family members (mucha, 0.1%)

            Yeah perhaps.

I actually think Aston Villa as a club has done a much better job than they're credited for under the circumstances. They were left with a ridiculous wagebill and dodgy players and are working their way out of it. They might still go down but in this team will be promoted again if they can keep it I would think, and in a few years some of these younger players should be fairly good at least.
