Fantasy managers were handed the first injury of the international period to consider this afternoon – before a ball has even been kicked. Theo Walcott has been ruled out of England’s upcoming fixtures against San Marino and Montenegro after reportedly injuring a groin in training last night:

At present, Arsenal have yet to comment on the situation but according to The Mirror, although the injury “is not too serious” Walcott could be set to miss next weekend’s home game with Reading. Press Association sources have also indicated he could be out “for seven to 10 days”, placing major question marks against his availability.

The news is a real concern for Fantasy managers. Walcott was hugely fancied as an armband choice for the Gameweek 31 Emirates showdown and was also rated as number one option for next weekend by Rate My Team – he will remain firmly in our thoughts, though, with a double Gameweek 33 just around the corner.

In all likelihood, his owners will hold until further news develops, with contingency plans made should be miss out. Santi Cazorla has already accrued more transfers in than any other player in the Gameweek but his appeal will surely now escalate. Indeed, transfer plans could be brought forward to snap up the Spaniard once his own pair of internationals is over – while Arsene Wenger could turn to Gervinho or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to fill the breach on the right, their respective lack of returns holds far less promise by comparison. With the double Gameweek still three weeks away, though, there’s plenty reason for optimism that Walcott will be back in the fold and firing once again as Wenger turns the heat up on Tottenham in the race for fourth.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This is a classic example of why making value saving transfers at the start of a 2 week international break in GW31 is a very bad strategy.

This particular example is magnified by Walcott's appalling injury record with England. His caps to injuries record with the national team must be approaching his strike rate. That was about as high risk one of those transfers as you could do.

I will probaly lose 1.0 mil over this international break on players like Fellaini, Walcott, Michu, Debuchy.

However I really don't care as it's GW31 and I would rather use my 2 FT's after the BPL Friday pressers when we find out if players like Cazorla are fit and ready to play rather than trying to save 0.2 bringing him in whilst watching MOTD last Saturday and transferring in players with triple AIDS of the Metatarsal.

Exactly. I've gambled on it once or twice - where there is a player or combo of players I know for sure will be priced out of my reach if I wait. I've got away with it, but it's not sensible.

Scraped thru to Euros thanks to favourable draw v Estonia. Destroyed at the Euros by (granted) better teams. Scraped past the mighty Kazakhs last year and pummeled by the Germans at home. 'Solid' generally when playing poor opposition. & only solid defensively. Against, generally, weaker opposition. Tonight's possibly the first time he's playing the better players. Good to see.

my original plan was to wc GW32, get the players I want then save in 33, but the fixtures aren't great for some in GW32. This tempted me to wc in GW33, but if I go in 32 I can sell Theo to Caz, take a 1 week punt on Siss or Michu for someone with a decent fixture (like Coutinho) then wc Theo back in for GW32 without a problem and probably for less than I sold him for. But if I go in 33 I'll likely have to keep him.
