As it gets to that time of the season where safety-first tactics are likely to disappoint, weโ€™re upped the risk factor when assessing our trio of overlooked alternatives. Injuries to others have afforded a couple of our picks the platform to impress, while our third protagonist is hoping for an upturn in performance after a change of manager:

Gervinho

With seven starts in the opening eight Gameweeks, the Ivorian had looked an integral part of Arsene Wengerโ€™s first-team at the start of the 2012/13 season. Having found the net in just two of those fixtures, though, a lack of consistency afforded Theo Walcott the chance to replace Gervinho on the right hand side and since then, heโ€™s been a peripheral figure for the north London outfit.

Two starts between Gameweek 9 and 30, with a mere 17 minutes between Gameweeks 17-28 highlighted just how fall heโ€™d fallen from favour but an injury to Walcott has suddenly thrust him back into the spotlight again. Climbing off the bench with 20 minutes remaining at Swansea late last month, he grabbed the Gunnersโ€™ second and with Walcott sidelined last weekend, his first-team return resulted in a goal and pair of assists as Wengerโ€™s side hammered Reading 4-1.

As Walcott struggles to recover for the Gunnersโ€™ double Gameweek, Gervinho could be primed to take advantage. With assistant boss Steve Bould revealing Walcott has only โ€œan outside chanceโ€ of making next weekendโ€™s clash against Norwich, Fantasy faith in the Ivorian is likely to flourish โ€“ with the likes of Gareth Bales out injured, many are prepared to take a risk or two and restructure their squads in an attempt to claw back mini league deficits.

Thereโ€™s no doubt his acquisition carries a degree of risk, though. If Walcott recovers in time for next weekend, thereโ€™s every chance Gervinho could be back to bench-warming duties; even if the England winger misses out against the Canaries, he could still come back to threaten Gervinhoโ€™s place against Everton the following Tuesday. Right now, though, the Ivorian is in the driving seat and his flourishing form may well convince Wenger to ease Walcott back into the first-team fold โ€“ at 6.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.6 in the Sky Sports game, he may well just be worth the gamble.

Jobi McAnuff

With eight assists to his name so far, the winger has teed up more goals than any Reading player so far this season. Indeed, McAnuffโ€™s potent source of creativity from the flank has proven superior to the likes of Gareth Bale and Marouane Fellaini, who have seven assists apiece, while Leighton Bainesโ€™ endeavours for Everton have helped him pick up six by comparison.

After a barren spell over spring, the arrival of Nigel Adkins seems to have boosted McAnuffโ€™s potential. A run of five Gameweeks without any returns came to an end in Adkinsโ€™ first match in charge, with McAnuff supplying the assist for Hal Robson-Kanuโ€™s consolation in last Saturdayโ€™s 4-1 defeat at the Emirates. As Adkins attempts to arrest a run of six straight defeats, heโ€™s set to face former club Southampton in his first home match in charge tomorrow lunchtime โ€“ itโ€™s likely that if the home side are to get any joy from their crucial encounter with the Saints, McAnuff, at 4.7 in FPL and 5.0 in the Sky Sports game, will have a major say.

Ryan Bertrand

A hamstring injury to Ashley Cole in Chelseaโ€™s FA Cup Sixth Round replay win over United last Monday brings the cut-price defender onto Fantasy radars. With Cole expected to be sidelined for around a fortnight, Bertrandโ€™s stay in the first-team is likely to be no more than a temporary measure but with a home clash against Sunderland followed by a trip to Fulham, he could still appeal to those on the lookout for a budget option at the back.

This weekend, in particular, affords reason for optimism. Rafa Benitezโ€™s side have conceded just once in their last three at the Bridge and with Sunderland still getting to grips with Paolo Di Canioโ€™s tactics, a home clean sheet could well be on the cards. Coming in at just 3.9 in FPL and 4.8 in the Sky Sports game, Bertrand look guaranteed at least a couple of league fixtures and, depending on Coleโ€™s rehabilitation period, may even benefit beyond his fellow full-backโ€™s predicted time for return.

Seb Bassong is the final defender as Norwich prepare for the visit of Swansea. The Canaries have conceded just twice in their last five home matches and will be confident of another clean sheet at Carrow Road – Swansea have scored just once in their previous five road trips. Bassong has already notched against the Welsh club earlier in the season, with his aerial ability proving crucial in the Canaries’ win at the Liberty.

Bego or Bunn? I've never had such trouble choosing.

My automatic thought is Bego has better odds for a CS.

But Norwich are quite tight at home. My problem is Norwich Swansea before has been a pretty high-scoring game.

What to do? I just can't make up my mind...I have attackers playing both (Michu and Benteke)

Who to bench out of an attacking 8 of
    Sissoko Michu Cazorla Gerard Mata
    Suarez Lambert Berba

    RMT suggests benching Berbatov. Yay/nay?

There always is. But he should play. I have gone with Mata over Cazorla, but its a tough choice.

Will give it a thought tomorrow before I make up my mind. Mata @ the bridge against a shady Sunderland team isn't a dumb choice.

Hi guys, I've haven't been on in a few days, Bale is definitely out right?

This means I need to make an unplanned transfer to field a decent 11 this week... probably Bale out...

    Bego
    Evans Davies Mertesacker (Harte Demel)
    Santi Sissoko Mata Bale* (Walcott)
    Suarez Rooney Benteke

Which looks best? Keep in mind I will probably play him next week too...

    A - Bale > Gerrard - (WHM, rdg)
    B - Bale > Hazard - (SUN, ful)
    C - Bale > Silva - (mun, WIG)

Ok fair enough, I guess it depends if you wanna double up on Chelsea for this week or go Gerrard, if those are your only 3 options, Silva vs Wigan looks tasty too...I really couldn't separate Gerrard and Hazard as punts, both good shouts, Hazard has some great home form but Gerrard has pens...flip a coin

Seriously? I did a pop-up survey on imdb yesterday, which I'd never seen before in years of using that site. Could this have led to a security weakness or was it likely just a wierd glitch here on FFS?

I'm going to sell him, since I have already retained an injured Walcott and need to switch him out for a decent 11 this week...

I can see him falling 0.5-6m over the course of these 2 weeks... so I'll only lose about 0.4 when I buy him back...
