A ding-dong battle produced plenty for neutral but relatively little for Fantasy managers as the Arsenal and Everton attacks failed to breakdown the defences on show. Here’s the Stock Check from Tuesday’s Gameweek 33 encounter…

On the Up

The Everton Defence
A fourth clean sheet in five for David Moyes’ rearguard ensured that owners of Leighton Baines and Sylvain Distin fetched strong returns over the double Gameweek. The latter has offered outstanding value, having also registered an assist in the win over QPR for a value of 5.3. Before Gameweek 30, Everton had kept just three shut-outs: despite such humble defensive returns, Baines is now comfortably the top scoring defender in the FPL on 153 points.

Kieran Gibbs & Bacary Sagna
While Arsene Wenger looks set to continue rotating his centre-backs, he chose to retain both Gibbs and Sagna tonight, despite having the option to bring in Nacho Monreal and Carl Jenkinson. Given that tonight’s starting full-backs played back-to-back 90 minutes in the space of three days, it seems they’re now established as Arsene Wenger’s first choice in their respective positions. That presumably consigns both Monreal and Jenkinson to bit part roles. It remains to be seen if Wenger rotates and hands them opportunity at Fulham this weekend.

Going Down

Santi Cazorla
Back-to-back blanks left thousands of Fantasy managers disgruntled as the Spaniard offered paltry returns from the Gameweek captaincy. It’s just one goal in the last six now for Cazorla, and that came in the home clash with Reading. Given his inconsistency, we may now see significant sales of Cazorla with Gareth Bale likely to be “most-wanted” should he regain fitness in time for Tottenham’s now confirmed double in Gameweek 36. Given Cazorla’s captaincy flop, Robin Van Persie’s performance at West Ham tomorrow night could now be crucial to many a mini-league.

Lukas Fabianski
The Pole missed out with a rib injury this evening and, having seen his compatriot, Wojciech Szczesny, keep a shut-out on this return to the starting lineup, it now remains to be seen if Fabianski can earn an recall on his return to fitness.

Gervinho
As expected, the Ivorian made way for the return of Theo Walcott to the starting lineup. The recent run of starts brought strong returns for Gervinho but it’s clear that he’ll face a uphill struggle to regain a role in Wenger’s starting XI having been unused on the bench tonight. Those who held or invested in Gervinho for the double Gameweek will either look to sell on or hope for heavy rotation for the weekend trip to the Cottage.

Marouane Fellaini
The Belgian put on superb showing for Everton tonight but, having been dropped into a central midfield role, the performance is likely to cause anxiety amongst his Fantasy owners. With Leon Osman sidelined, David Moyes will have been delighted with Fellaini’s showing and, while he will be expected to be restored in a more attacking role on Osman’s return, Felliani could well be deployed in the engine room for the visit to Sunderland this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

RVP(c) coming in today could be bloody brilliant.

Only 1 out of the 10 ahead of me have him. Crucial, crucial game this.

Ta. If all 3 start a century pre-hits is on the cards, but I doubt it post-hits, unless Kagawa does indeed put on a show.

Best o' luck on the charge up the top there. Pressure time! 🙂

To be fair to Ade he was brilliant last season and certainly took us forward (we did actually finish in a champions league spot) - this season he's been dire but has shown slight signs of improvement. Defoe is useless - can't stand him as a player.

Remy and Benteke would be decent but I'm not sure it shows a whole load of ambition.

This week – 33 from 4 with DDG to come.

            Last 4 weeks – 36 from 20

    DDG
    Johnson – Martin – Baines
    Cazorla – Walcott – Fellaini – Sissoko
    RVP – Berba – Suarez

    Rudd – Sagna – Schneiderlin – Wilson

Only 0.2m in the bank to play with, but still with the wildcard

Plan was to save the GW34 transfer and do Berba & Suarez --> Benteke & Aguero in GW35, before wildcarding in GW36... However I have this horrible feeling Michu is gonna go nuts vs Southampton... any thoughts? Thanks

My defence this week is as so:

    Carra(CHE) Clichy(tot) Sagna(ful)

    Not looking great.

Would you do carra to vert (-4) or one of my cheapies (Wilson/Pearce) to Fig/Alcaraz (-4)

Guys need some help please, I asked this before. I can't remember this site I had in my bookmarks, its a basic free football stat site, across most European leagues. The layout is similar to FPL, it shows you top 10 teams home/away, top 10 players home/away. I know for a fact its a popular site and people use it on here. When I asked this before, someone pointed me towards a blog, the site is not a blog.

If anybody could answer this, you'd be a star.

    Thanks, craney.

I keep saying this and no-one says anything back. Maybe I'm off the mark (I frequently am)

As far as I can see, City's only fixture congestion issue is the FA Cup Final. So Aguero almost certainly won't have a DGW, but he won't have a blank either. After Spurs, City's fixtures are great, and he seems to finally have found some form. He could easily outscore a DGW striker over the remainder of the season.

The way I see it is that we may as well just treat City's fixtures as:

tot, WHA, swa, rdg, NOR (ignoring the WBA in GW36 due to the heavy rotation anticipated)

That's pretty decent and carries potential for returns. Whether it's decent enough to justify selling someone on good form who also has 5 games left (e.g. Suarez) is questionable.

My mate has a theory that the reason he is being used sparingly is that WBA know they wont be able to buy him so don't want to build the team around him too much and lose him.

Given that they don't have a lot to play for now that sort of seems like a reasonable theory imo.

His fixtures look great and he certainly has potential, but it is risky due to lack of game time.... I would go for Kone or Berbatov or possibly Benteke/Lambert if you already have one of them... But it could definitely be worth a punt if you are chasing or just looking to live some!

    Hi guys,

Just come on to wish you good luck for the remainder of the season. I decided last night to pack it in for the season and did a load of transfers to prevent me from changing my mind today. I don't regret it.

We all have our thoughts on the luck % but I feel this season it's just been too high (my sister is inside the top 1k and asked me why Thierry Henry never played for England!!).

If Mark has any say on next season's rules, I'd suggest a 1 Wild Card cap, instead of 2. 0 would be better but of course the Premier League don't give a monkey's who's doing well - only how many play the game all season and thus improving any advertising rates etc.

My team to have a laugh at is here:
    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/2474/event-history/33/

At least now I can watch the remaining games without wanting a boring 0-0, or who scores. Instead be a neutral and enjoy the game more.

Hi Granville, in response to your comment about the practice of people intentionally having non-playing players in thier first XI, and then active players on the bench, I only do it because I'm tired of seeing my rank going down at the end of a GW after everyone else gets their autosubs in.

The idea of half points for auto subs is interesting, but I'm not entirely convinced. What would you do for odd numbers?

I see the point, but it reduces the importance of having a strong squad - if you know a player coming off the bench is only likely to get 0 or 1 points - or even 3 if you bench a cheap defender and they pick up an unexpected clean sheet - then it's less worthwhile to have a strong squad, and you might as well pick a strong 11 and then the four cheapest options fir the bench, even if they never play (Shane Ferguson anyone?).

That's no doubt true. But it's just a game and a bit of fun, or that's what it should be. I just think some people take it far too seriously.

Such a big % of this game is down to pure luck (e.g. the amount of injuries you've had this year). You can apply all the logic and reasoning you want, but, imo, the biggest factor between, say, top 1k and top 20k+ is pure luck.

Nah, I'm pleased for my sis, she doesn't even look at it much. It's about not getting any rub of the green vs my rivals and not watching as much football due to wanting cleansheets and that sort of thing.

Shame to work so hard to improve your rank only to throw it away at the peak! But I totally understand that it can take away from the enjoyment of watching football. This is the reason I never play an FF game during an international tournaments, I don't want to stress out about whether the Ghanian right-back is on corners or not.

Could there be anything worse tho? A 0-0 draw and watching for 90 between those teams would almost make me hate the sport 🙂

Ruins some games but makes me more interested in West Ham vs Fulham (or equivalent) which would ordinarily hold little interest.

It's a good talking point down the pub (watching the game) if you're in a fantasy football league with a few mates

Here's me sat at 70K and you're the one moaning. Then again if you can't hack it then you can't hack it. I've got so annoyed at this game at points that it's made me want to quit so I can understand actually.

Take the rough with the smooth - good to see you posting on here with a rank lower than you're happy with... most in a similar position would be long gone... you'll be top 10k next season no bother.

I know exaclty how you feel. The trick is to be pleased when you do well and take it with a pinch of salt if things go badly. Its only a game, so try notto get too invested in it. i find that if i'm not putting as much thought into it, I actually score better too.

This is a bit dramatic. You have managed to play it for 33 weeks out of 38. You must have known before now that things can easily go for or against you and there is alot of randomness involved.

It seems worse chucking away the time you spent in the 33 weeks prior just for the sake of being free of FPL for 5 weeks when the season is almost over anyway and you can forget about it all summer and decide if it's worth returning to next season.

Sorry to hear that. This game isn't for everyone I guess.

The % of luck doesn't really vary between seasons though, that is just a feeling you get when you're on the wrong side of it.

    Guys, any updates on Lukaku?

Saw he was starting consistently, and then didn't start last week?

How do you rate his chances as a starter next few games? Was thinking of getting him in.
