He may always be amongst the priciest defenders on offer across the Fantasy games but when it comes to consistency, there’s few, if any, backline options that can justify their hefty price quite like Leighton Baines. With set-piece and spot-kick duties in his locker, the argument for acquiring the Toffees raiding left-back has always been a strong one in many Fantasy managers’ eyes.

Once again, Baines delivered with a series of superb displays in David Moyes’ final season in charge at Goodison Park. The only outfield player to feature in every minute of the 2012/13 campaign, his propensity for picking up returns at both ends of the pitch saw him comfortably finish 25 points ahead of his nearest defensive challenger in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with a total of 177 points just a single point shy of his best ever showing.

The Statistics

Starting the season at 7.0 in FPL (7.1 in the Sky Sports game), Baines signalled his intent immediately, returning a clean sheet and maximum FPL bonus points in a Gameweek 1 home win over United. By the time Gameweek 9 has finished, he’d already plundered two goals, three assists and 11 bonus points – somewhat atoning for the fact he’d added just one more clean sheet to his tally over the period, courtesy of a Gameweek 5 away win at Swansea which delivered the first of three sets of double figures over the FPL campaign.

A run of 16 matches without a single clean sheet between the Gameweek 6 home clash against Southampton and Gameweek 21 trip to Newcastle saw him rely on attacking intent alone but, from the St James’ Park showdown onwards, Baines’ consistency was incredible. With the Toffees embarking on their customary strong finish under Moyes, Baines produced a goal, assist or clean sheet in 14 of the last 18 Gameweeks.

He ended joint-top scorer for defenders, finding the net on five occasions, produced more assists (seven) than any backline option and, along with 11 clean sheets, delivered 24 bonus points in the FPL game – again, a greater tally than any defender. Eventually rising to 7.8, the Everton man found his way into 23% of FPL teams, second only to Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross.

The Prospects

With Moyes now off to Old Trafford to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, Fantasy managers will approach Everton’s assets a little more tentatively in the new season. Much depends on who takes up the Goodison reins, of course, though a Toffees side under the likes of Roberto Martinez, for example, may struggle to mirror the steely resilience instilled by Moyes.

Baines’ success across the Fantasy games is likely to earn him a price hike, with a cost of 7.5 looking the likeliest scenario in FPL – as we attempt to cut corners at the back and seek out cut-price options to help balance the budget, Baines may well be a luxury many choose to overlook until the Merseysiders settle under the new man in charge.

There’s also the possibility of Baines following his former manager to Old Trafford. United have been linked with the left-back in seasons gone by and as Moyes looks to put his own stamp on the champions, he could well turn to one of his most trusted charges as he begins to rebuild at the back. A move to United would surely see Baines lose spot-kicks to Robin Van Persie, though, while the Dutchman would be likely to edge him out for corners and free-kicks, too – a real concern, given how key they have been to the left-back’s returns over the years at Everton. Although Baines would benefit from increased defensive returns at Old Trafford, then, a reliance on attacking points from open play could see him struggle to justify his premium price.

In addition, it would also have a knock-on effect on Patrice Evra. The Frenchman has delivered his most impressive season in terms of finding the net and was second only to Baines for defenders in FPL – the latter’s potential arrival would raise real question marks over the 32-year-old’s future, with Moyes unlikely to use the duo as a rotation pairing. Ultimately, then, Ferguson’s departure from Old Trafford is not just a bitter blow to United fans, it’s a decision that could snowball onto our Fantasy plans for the season ahead and potentially raises real concerns over a couple of left-backs that have offered a rarely-matched source of consistency over the last few seasons in the Premier League.

The assistant manager in UCL Fantasy is pretty stupid... My GKs are Neuer and Weidenfeller...

And he says, "Both your goalkeepers are due to play on the first day of the forthcoming matchday. You'll give yourself more flexibility if you replace one of them with a player whose team will play their game on the second day of the matchday. Why not make a transfer now?"

Where can I get another team to play another UCL final on another day to make a transfer?

    REPOST:
i was wondering about another thing:

do u guys really think that if Mourinho does come to Chelsea he’ll let Lukaku out on loan???
the man who brought Drogba for 24m would let a similar player who has had a great season be loaned out whereas he can play him regularly or when his other strikers are not performing well !!!

I'd personally take Lukaku over either Torres or Ba, but I don't think they'll want to shift either - Ba is still a new signing, and Torres is rediscovering some form. I also anticipate that they will bring in a top striker (Falcao obviously being the prime target). Therefore, I can see another Lukaku loan as a possibility, but it isn't one I'd want if I was a Chelsea fan.

Lesson was learned with Pique and Cesc - letting clear talents go to other clubs too early. He is widely regarded as the future of Barca's midfield, his brother is a starlet for the reserve team, his dad is involved - he isn't going anywhere.

Götze being out isn't that huge a blow for Dortmund, I don't think. Reus is more important.

    Two options:
    1) Reus replaces him centrally, with Großkreutz on the left.
    2) İlkay Gündoğan moves forward into the Götze position, with Bender and Kehl playing double defensive midfield.

Both are possible, the first is the more likely from previous selections.

Genuinely don't think that Götze's absence is as massive a blow as people think.

Playing Großkreutz on the left would mean more defensive cover for Schmelzer, who has looked dodgy this season against Robben and Lahm, and always seemed to be the weak link defensively.

But at the same time it gives robben more time to roam forward as the Dortmund lose reus on the left. I agree it could be worst for Dortmund as they have a few players in that position and I think reus and the big pole ae more integral because to Dortmund because of this fact. But still, Dortmund will lose a lot in term of creativity in the middle of the parck.

He's a bit of a knobber, but fair play for this:

Lawrenson says: "It's meant to be a bit of fun, although I've lost count of the number of times a fan has stopped me outside a ground to say 'your predictions are rubbish'.

"I respond by saying 'if I could successfully predict all the results, do you really think I'd be here? I'd be on a yacht in the Caribbean drinking a gin and tonic'."

Nah I follow ligue 1 to and pastore has been a disappointment I think, he can turn up and set the match alight, for example when he first joined.

If they where to play the final (and playing at their strengths) then the team above would be the one they pick.

              Il second the Matuidi comment.

No. It's pure speculation from L'Équipe that it might mean Zlatan's departure as they'd have two world-class strikers, but to be honest there's not much solid fact in the article at all.

Money aside playing in Ligue 1 won't do enough for his development.

Ronaldinho spent 2 years at PSG around the same age so a year or two seems more logical. He needs to play in a better league at some point for sure.

          That was the old psg.

If Monaco continue in the manner they have started then I generally believ French league football will kick off dramatically. With better player people will be more intrested, bigger tv deals etc etc. they see the champions league as the trophy. No doit moura will leave, but not in two (unless something happens which is our of the ordinary)

Romelu Lukaku believes he has proven his worth to Chelsea after a successful loan spell at West Brom.

After failing to score for Chelsea in his debut campaign he joined West Brom on loan and racked up 17 goals, and now Lukaku hopes to shine for the Blues just as he has done for the Baggies.

"I've had a great season and now I want to do better," he told reporters.

"After last year, a lot of people doubted me, but I kept believing in my qualities and worked hard.

"With the help of the fans and this club, I just couldn't fail here. From day one I have felt at home - like I was back in Brussels. That's why I have performed so well.

"They have helped me through the good and the bad days. I was really convinced the team would have a good season.

"It's been wonderful to be here."

The 20-year-old became only the third player, after Dirk Kuyt and David Bentley, to score a Premier League hat-trick against Manchester United, as the Baggies drew 5-5 with the Red Devils on the final day of the season.

yeah...and sadly that might impact on his tally as well...I'm convinced that he is already a 30 goal a season striker given the sort of minutes afforded to RVP/Michu/Benteke and the like...It'll be nice to see if Mourinho agrees (?)...
