Our series of β€œSleeper” articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, continues with a look at Norwich City number one, John Ruddy. Despite a twelfth place finish in Paul Lambert’s final term in charge at Carrow Road, Norwich’s defence were particularly culpable and shipped 66 goals over the campaign – given that only the three relegated clubs conceded more, the Canaries backline assets remained in the cut-price bracket when the players lists were rolled out across the Fantasy games last summer:

With the somewhat cautious Chris Hughton installed to the hotseat, Fantasy managers were optimistic of an upturn in defensive potential. Ruddy had delivered a total of three sheets across 2011/12 due to Lambert’s attack-minded brand of football but the Canaries did little to indicate they’d be a source of defensive returns after shipping five to Fulham and Liverpool in the opening six Gameweeks.

As the season unfolded, though, and with the acquisition of centre-half Seb Bassong from Tottenham a key factor, Norwich started to pick up in performance. Between Gameweek 8 and 13, Hughton’s side began to grind out the results and conceded just two goals in six games, with clean sheets accrued against the likes of Arsenal and United, as well as Stoke and Reading.

Ruddy returned a double figure display in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game against United in Gameweek 12 thanks to six saves and a couple of bonus points in a 1-0 home win but just as he was starting to prosper, disaster struck after a thigh injury – sustained in the following match against Everton – ruled out the stopper for a number of months. Sidelined for virtually the rest of the season, Ruddy’s absence saw 4.0 priced deputy Mark Bunn nailed-on between December and April, though the former’s return to the first-team fold in Gameweek 37 proved vital. Finally match-fit after a number of reserve appearances, he helped the Canaries to a 4-0 win over West Brom which not only produced a first clean sheet in eight attempts but, far more crucially, helped the Canaries clinched top-flight survival for yet another season.

The Prospects

While Ruddy’s injury hampered his chances over 2012/13, his overall lack of game time should prove significant when Fantasy games roll out next season’s price lists. With just 15 appearances in Hughton’s first term at the helm, it seems unfeasible Ruddy will increase in cost and should remain accordingly at a budget 4.5 in the FPL game – a scenario that will undoubtedly bring him onto Fantasy radars for the campaign ahead.

The Canaries mustered a total of 10 clean sheets last time round – only one less than West Ham, for example – but while the Hammers delivered six at home and five on the road, Hughton’s side were a lot more predictable, with eight of those clean sheets arriving at home. Certainly, this Carrow Road form bolsters Ruddy’s appeal for 2013/14 – Norwich lack of resilience on the road means finding a budget rotation partner will be key, though it’s worth noting that Ruddy’s heroics between the sticks earned him 13 save points across those 15 appearances; another factor that will heighten his Fantasy potential next time round.

Given that last season’s budget favourites Jussi Jaaskelainen and Asmir Begovic can be expected to move to around the 5.5 mark, our assessment of the goalkeeping landscape is set to shift focus in 2013/14. Providing he can remain injury-free, then, Ruddy seems nailed on under Hughton and if the Canaries can replicate their home displays of last term, he could be a real value option at the back. Bearing in mind that Bassong, Russell Martin and Michael Turner also chipped in with three goals apiece, the Norwich backline look set for a slight upturn in price across the Fantasy games, leaving Ruddy as the standout option amongst Hughton’s defensive charges for the season ahead.

Norwich had hopeless rotation last season but they were still the best value defence. This is when I think the rotation theory prevents people from picking the best defenders.

If he's 4.5 next season Ruddy will be a bargain. Norwich had the best value defence this last season.

Missed your message yesterday failed to reply. Re: places to visit in Canada. All the cities (toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver) are wonderful. Ie in Toronto, Toronto and Montreal are very metropolitan while Calgary is more of a small town vibe. If the outdoors is your pleasure, then Vancouver is defiantly the place to go.

It was Roberts rebellion. Robert lead the uprising against the mad king Aerys.
The Rebellion was fronted by Ned Stark, Robert and Jon Arryn, Roberts lineage made him the most suitable of the three Lords to sit the throne.
Tywin did not have the support, so settled by marrying his daughter Cersei to the newly crowned King.

Jesus what a ball ache, I spent how long trying to get the top of a page for this comment and then they post a new article πŸ™

Anyway this is what I wanted to post to see if there are any discerning Liga followers who might be able to add something.

From my research into Pellegrini his favoured formation has been 4-2-2-2 with two def mids who cover attacking fb's and two attacking mids playing behind two mobile strikers. The idea behind the formation is that either the strikers the attacking mids or the fb's can provide width or a combination of them if there is a chance to overload the opposition fb's.

With this in mind I think he will line up with a front six of:

    yaya fernandinho

    Navas Silva

    Tev Kun

I don't see much room for Rodwell/Garcia/Barry/ here unless they get the odd game in the def mid slots or Nasri/Sinclair unless they get the odd game as attacking mids which should happen as navas will probably need time to bed in. I also read in a few places that he likes the option of a target man but does not start them that often preferring the mobility of the strikers who can drift to provide width (as stated earlier) so Dzeko if he stays is likely to be only a squad player again.

Can anyone tell me if I am getting him right here or not?

Cheers Patrick I wasn't aware of this but the premise is still the same I guess except it looks like city will be signing another mobile striker. Either that or he plays like he did at Real Madrid with the 4-2-3-1 but I still think they will bring in another striker if Tevez leaves.

A bit AB but not really as the attacking mids are not required to do a whole lot of tracking back from what I have read. It seems he likes to press high up the pitch but also likes his attacking players to conserve energy for attacking (I know seems a bit strange, high press and conserve energy) unlike a typical diamond where the wide players require huge stamina as their most important attribute and their is a designated attacking mid in the hole.

So basically no designated mid in the hole as the two behind the strikers alternate with the strikers to fill this (no10) position.

Germany's Peniel Mlapa will miss the rest of the U-21 competition due to his muscle injury.

    http://www.derwesten.de/sport/fussball/gladbach/muskelfaserriss-zwingt-gladbachs-mlapa-zum-fruehen-em-aus-id8044632.html

Mind you, I don't tihnk he would have played that much anyway considering the fact that his manager said after the match that "nothing worked for Mlapa all game. I would have replaced him anyway even he hadn't had muscle problems. So his injury came at the right time."

Hope this means that Germany will line up with the front four that they ended up with. Volland up front, and Herrmann - Holtby - Clemens just behind. That's what I'd suggested in my "wish list" team before the tournament.

49 GKs identified as 'targets'. Sorted by current TM value we have:

          All of the top 15
          23 of the top 25
          31 of the top 40.

The highest value keeper missing from the list is Marchetti at €10m.

I'm still a bit confused as to what the point of this part of the game is.

It's so there is only a set pool of players that you can bid for and not be able to get some obscure player no one has heard of for 1 token for example. Otherwise everyone could get players for 1 token each.

I'll be perfectly OK with someone picking up Andrew Stobie for 1 token. Just fine with me. If they want to pay more than 1 token for him, then even better. (I heard he is getting a big money move to Whitehill Welfare soon, so may be due a massive price rise - hint hint).

And doesn't TMarkt give us a set pool of players by default. The game is about value after all.

I'm sure I'm just suffering from 'game lull' but I still don't see the point of this bit yet.

Yeah, that would be great. Somehow, I get the feeling he'll be £5m though based on the fact that when he was fit, he started and that Norwich were a tidy CS unit last year.

He's probably the best of a bad bunch when it comes to promoted keepers.

Don't forget the optimism we had over Reading's defence last year. If it wasn't for the cult status of Gorkss, Shorey and Harte due to their attacking returns, it would have been a dire set of returns.

There's certainly better value to be had by rotating two cheap keepers and getting the good returns from both, however it's sometimes hard to predict those returns.

I think simple picking a cheapish keeper and sticking with him is the best option. It won't do any harm to have a dirt cheap backup who can fill in for his really bad fixtures (e.g. mun, che, mci, ars, tot) though.

Historically, defensive returns from top teams tend to increase towards the end of the season (I've seen various analyses done), so starting with cheaper keepers is the best option IMO.

        Interesting response.

        So a 4.5m & a 4m = 8.5m, that would save 2m, as opposed to getting Hart.

Well I doubt Hart will be less than £7m for a start, but as I said below, around £9.5m is my budget.

It all depends on pricing of course and if we get some unexpectedly good value somewhere due to a strange pricing decision or a transfer after the prices are released.

      Say 6.5 + 4 = 10.5m

      Or 4.5 + 4.5 = 9m

So you spend 1.5m more, but you are more likely to get more points, as you'd just play Hart all the time. Trying to rotate both cheaper keepers wont always work out, you will bench the higher scoring keeper at least a few times over the season.

you'll be lucky to get a decent 4.5/4.5 rotation, 5/4.5 is more likely (i think ruddy will be 5)

if cech or hart were somehow 6.0 then i'd be tempted by your idea - i reckon hart could be 7 though

        Either the second one, or:

        £5m + £4.5m/£4m

Ruddy being £4.5m might of course mean we can happily get two £4.5m ones and be fairly confident in playing Ruddy every week.

With the 100.0 budget I think you'll find it hard to justify 11 on keepers. There's often some nice middle ground options 5-6 price range that get overlooked. I tend to end up with not so popular keepers

Tough one. I've upgraded Thiago to Isco on my wildcard because I think Isco will do more in the next 2 games. I think I got lucky with Thiago in gameday 1 but I don't see that continuing.

However, I also got Holtby in. He looks essential to me. Germany will score goals and he's likely to be involved in most of them.

I got Insigne today too. Italy could put a serious beat down on Israel tonight.

My dilemma is do I downgrade Rodrigo or have £24m of my budget invested in him and Isco? The numbers suggest keeping Rod will pay dividends but it's a lot of cash that weakens my midfield depth.

    Nyland, Kongshavn,
    Clyne, Biraghi, Bianchetti, Moreno, Ginter

              I won't make a good mod, imo.
I am of the opinion that all kinds of views/comments should be allowed to reach people, it depends on them whether they like/dislike it. No point deleting them.

Some views just don't need to be posted on this site though. There's plenty of other sites for those.
