634x258 Great Expectations

Snapped up from Olympiakos towards the end of last year’s summer transfer window, Kevin Mirallas arrived at Everton on the back of an eye-catching campaign. With his final season in Greece harvesting 20 goals from 25 league games, the Belgian looked a canny acquisition by David Moyes but a role on the Toffees right flank, combined with an ongoing hamstring complaint, limited his Fantasy potential.

His classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game hardly helped either. While Marouane Fellaini benefitted from his advanced central berth behind a lone forward, Mirallas suffered as a reverse out of position performer – despite being stuck on the wing in Moyes’ preferred 4-4-1-1 system, he chipped in with six goals, five assists and 13 bonus points from 24 starts. With Moyes taking up the reins at Manchester United, however, the installation of Roberto Martinez to the Goodison hotseat may be set to promote Mirallas as a significant Fantasy performer for the season ahead.

Key Factors

  • Martinez’s penchant for a 3-4-3 formation seems tailor-made for Mirallas. With the former Wigan boss expected to field Seamus Coleman on the right of the midfield four, the Belgian looks likely to be shifted further forward, affording him greater license to thrive as an attacking prospect. While such a system would diminish Fellaini’s potential, with a move to central midfield on the cards, Mirallas should rise in the Fantasy pecking order under Martinez’s guidance.

  • Last season’s spot on the flank should now benefit Mirallas. A midfield classification across the Fantasy games may apply, affording us a real out of position prospect with a keen eye for goal. Price-wise, his debut campaign suggests a drop from last term’s initial 7.5 price tag could be on offer – Fellaini and Steven Pienaar both started the previous campaign at 6.5 and, given that Mirallas ultimately returned a total of 96 points, such a cost would be a fair reflection of his contribution last time out.

  • The hamstring issue which hampered his game time now finally seem to be behind him. Mirallas limped out of the Gameweek 11 clash with Sunderland after less than half an hour and lasted just 45 minutes of the Gameweek 16 home match with Tottenham before succumbing to the same problem. Moyes courted caution with the problem, easing him back into the Toffees first-team, but a fully-fit Mirallas started each of his side’s last 11 league games and proved an increasingly instrumental figure for the Merseysiders.

  • Further analysis of Mirallas’ form highlights a definite upturn in performance over those final few months of the season. Devoid of injury and finally accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, he produced five goals, an assist and 13 bonus points over those final 11 fixtures, compared to a single goal and four assists across his first 16 appearances. Even if – as some suspect – Martinez begins with last season’s formation until the players get to grips with his tactics, Mirallas’ potential still looks to be strong.

  • The opening fixture list has been relatively kind to Martinez’s troops. Three of their first four home games hold plenty appeal (WBA, NEW, HUL) and with trips to Norwich and Cardiff also on their agenda, Everton face just two of last season’s top eight in the first eight Gameweeks, with a home game against Chelsea and visit to City in Gameweeks 4 and 7 respectively.

As far as I know, Chelsea have seven attacking midfielders in their senior squad right now - Mata, Hazard,Moses, Oscar, Schurrle, Marin and de Bruyne.

Is the Chelsea midfield going to be a rotation minefield this year (like the way Mourinho rotated his midfielders at Real Madrid last year), or is he going to stick to the tried and tested options over here?

I rather hope 2 of them, because unless Chelsea sign a good striker, we can't even predict whether Torres/Lukaku/Ba starts up top. So, 1 defender + 2 midfielders will probably be the way to go.

I remember when Jose was here last time out, he had a team of untouchables. Meaning he played these guys in every match they were fit in. So we might get 1 or 2 completely nailed on here. I can't see Marin, De Bruyne and Moses getting too much game time tbh. I still think Hazard, Mata and Oscar are going to be the ones that'll see a lot of game time.

Hazard is someone I've pencilled in for GW1, already.

Mata is another top guy, but Mourinho's supposed dislike for Mata ( that's what I read in news) makes me sceptical.

And Oscar, even if he plays, I'm not completely sure about his Fantasy potential.

I don't know where these rumors about Mourinho disliking Mata have emerged from. He was our best player last season, and by a mile. I don't think there are doubts over his game time if Mourinho plays the same formation we did last year. (4-2-3-1)

Mata is probably essential for Chelsea right now, but then, Mourinho has his own ideas.

Otherwise, which other manager would have dared to keep Kaka on the bench for two long years?

Trigger. I was just wondering there about something you were on about the other day. At the start, do you bring in players who are rising regardless of fixtures to catch it. I mean, scoring high means they're gonna get brought in by the masses so do you count that as form or do you just bring em in to increase TV regardless?

Following on from SABG's post above (+1), how are and how do regs intend to view the forums (i.e. leave it based on timestamp, or do more intend to view it based on voting/hot topics). I think if most regs were to switch and use it by the ratings and actively used the upvote more frequently it will lead to a natural filter of the Gravless' RMTs , etc.

I hadn't thought about it too much before now, but even now there does seem to be quite a low percentage of upvoting. Personally I think it's at the quieter times when good productive posts are garnered, that we should be supporting the regs and actually giving the +1 instead of waiting for opinions and posts that directly help us.

Not sure if I've got my point across exactly, but what's pls thoughts on this?

Always manic from about 9am onwards on a Saturday, I log on read the articles and post some advice where I can (grav, a reg or not!).

I will probably leave the settings on time, and skim through the posts but now under HC will be paying particular attention to the Hot Topic and Stickies.

Hopefully if us Mods, Jonty & co are up to the mark, well be able to cherry pick the 'gems' or little nugget that will help all posters with their last minute decisions on match days e.g. Team news, injuries, form guides etc.

let's think about this for a minute:

chance to stay at home and be closer to family (his brother is in the Barca B team) vs having to move to a new country

chance to remain with his boyhood club vs moving elsewhere

chance to be surrounded by fellow Spainiards vs just DDG

chance to play with Messi + Neymar vs chance to play with RVP and Rooney(?)

chance to play with and be mentored by Xavi, Iniesta, and Fabregas vs chance to play with Carrick, Anderson, and Cleverly

able to play in a system that is very suited to him and is also quite similar to the style used by the national team which he wants to play on vs learning a new style and different league

just some factors he might be considering. the two factors that swing in United's favorite are higher wages and regular playing time. though with Xavi getting older, especially with the WC this year, I can see him being rested more to keep him at optimal fitness which will then allow more playing time for Thiago

      Hi Jinswick!

"Here’s a brief summary of what HomeCrowd means to the average Fantasy Football Scout visitor…

In terms of what you’ll see and experience, this should hopefully be business as usual with a few more bells and whistles.

You can now vote for comments and this will give a rating boost or penalty to the comment, the weighting of which depends on your reputation which is maintained behind the scenes. You earn reputation by earning votes and generally posting good stuff that gets recognition from the community and us contributors and moderators.

So voting adds rating and you can now sort an entire thread of comments by that rating. This allows you to quickly catch up on the days most valuable, significant, informative or perhaps entertaining discussions.

You can also go straight to the key stuff by viewing Hot Topics. You’ll see a new tab on the recent comments widget – click this and you’ll view the last ten Hot Topics. These are discussions singled out by mods and staff members because we feel there’s value in reading them or perhaps they include information that we want visitors to take in.

You can also view another user’s profile and your own profile by clicking a username or gravatar.

For now, that’s all that you’ll notice that’s different, aside from a few badges and the general design changes."

It's the new comment system. Means we can draw out posts that are interesting and make them a hot topic or a sticky. People can then use the widget at the side or search option above to find them. Helps make it easier to find the good posts. You can also vote for posts you like.., and search by comment rating as well.

Rooney's as good as gone. Who else is going to do the business up fromt for Utd in this new regime?

                  Gotta be RVP and Bale.

Whichever one turns out to be lesser than the other; sold off for a small loss, but you wouldn't go without him.

Except for the ghost Higuain, there's nothing much else up front

How about this.... I've been trying to think of ideas for about ten minutes and I think I've got one. On an arranged date, every regular changes their grav to a picture of their favourite player of all time, and every time a non legend grav user posts something, you must reply with an explanation of why your player is best. Takers?

Why? I don't mean it in an elitist way? Maybe there could just be a day when we all change grabs to a favourite player??

That's because they are more suited to a T20 game which is how this is panning out

Duckworth Lewis would favour England, reduced overs favours India
