Chris Hughton continued to add to the Norwich first-team squad yesterday after
signing Nathan Redmond on a four-year deal from Birmingham City. The 19-year-old makes his way Carrow Road in a deal believed to be around ยฃ3m and is the Canariesโ€™ second new face of the summer, following the arrival of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon.

Having been handed his league debut by the former Blues boss back in 2010, the highly-rated teenager โ€“ who was also linked with a move to Swansea โ€“ was delighted to be reunited with Hughton once again…

“I’d probably say I’ve played some of my best football under him so far. He was very influential on my career at Birmingham. He gave me the chance to play and the chance to express myself every time that I stepped on to the field and I feel like on the bigger stage he’ll do exactly the same thing.”

The History

During his debut season, Redmond was tentatively eased into action at St Andrews. Making 19 of his 24 appearances from the bench, he grabbed five goals and a pair of assists as Hughton guided the midlands outfit to the Championship play-offs. Last time out, the youngster managed 22 starts and 16 sub appearances, returning a couple of goals and six assists under new boss Lee Clark. On the international stage, Redmond has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, producing four goals from 38 games.

The Prospects

Speaking to the clubโ€™s official website upon completion of the deal, Hughton admitted Redmondโ€™s versatility is likely to be key over the season ahead. Predominantly right-footed, he also offers an option as an inverted winger on the opposite flank and could be utilised in โ€œthe holeโ€ in the Canaries default 4-4-1-1 formation:

“Nathan is a young and exciting player that I had the pleasure of working with at Birmingham. He’s someone we can bring in to the forward areas and primarily has played on either wing in his career so far, but can also play off the front. He’s very keen to develop his own game, he’s one of these lads that likes to be on the training pitch and is usually one of the last ones off the training pitch. I’m sure the move won’t phase him but this is still a part of his development and one he is very much looking forward to.”

With Van Wolfswinkel looking set to be handed the lone forward role and Robert Snodgrass nailing down the right wing berth, Redmond should offer competition to Anthony Pilkington on the left and Wes Hoolahan as the most advanced midfielder behind Van Wolfswinkel. Bearing in mind his side notched just 41 times last time round, Hughton is in dire need of extra firepower in midfield โ€“ Hoolahan scored three times from 33 appearances (28 starts), while Pilkington was just a little more prolific with five strikes in 25 starts.

In terms of game time, much may also depend on whether the Canaries manage to capture summer target Ola Toivonen โ€“ the Swede would tuck in behind Van Wolfswinkel if he arrives from PSV Eindhoven, forcing Redmond to rely more on appearances from the bench unless he forces Pilkington down the pecking order on the left. Likely to be classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games, Redmond should come in around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) โ€“ potentially, he could be a decent mid-price option though concerns remain as to whether he will nail down a regular role or be tentatively eased into the first-team fold, with appearances as an impact sub late on in games either out wide or through the middle if Norwich move to two up front mid-match.

Hughtonโ€™s line-ups over pre-season should shed more light on the situation but with home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa in the first five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to promoted Hull, the Canaries certainly have the platform to be quick off the mark. Whether Redmond can offer us a viable alternative to Snodgrass over those matches or, indeed, the season ahead is perhaps debatable, with the Scot remaining the most likely source of points in Hughton’s midfield.

Fantasy what? This has gone too far. I've heard it all now.
How does that work if Contador wins then fails the drug test after it? Do they need to review the results until 2016 or something?

With the news that Rooney wont leave, does anyone plan to sign the double figure priced striker who plays half his time in midfield and is no longer on penalties nor the clubs main man and who will probably be at United comw GW1 but will probably be sold by close of the transfer window anyway? ...... I'm considering it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I know. I've always been a bit of a Milan fan too but I hate when Milan sign past it big names on the slide. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Beckham, Vieri. They rake money out and never perform. This is why Milan are now not able to pay such big names.

I know, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho actually played crucial roles for us in the short term but they weren't cheap. Just as big a problem was the long and high wage contracts given to various players that weren't that good around the time of the 2006/07 CL win. Management got a bit carried away with our squad of 'champions' at the time.

Kaka won that tournament himself more or less.
Well, Super Pippo obviously in the final was a god as usual, but Kaka carried that team (then became a fat joke).

The 2005 side was better than 03 and 07 despite not winning. Kaka, Crespo, Shenchenko attack was brilliant.

Kaka was of course the stand out player but some of the others (in particular Seedorf, Pirlo, Gattuso) were immense in he knockouts.

Yeah, the 2005 side was the best. That we won nothing that year really was infuriating.

                  Dida
                  Cafu, Stam, Nesta, Maldini
                  Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf
                  Kaka
                  Crespo, Shevchenko

Immense team, and there were players like Inzaghi, Rui Costa, Tomasson, Ambrosini, Kaladze and an ageing Costacurta in the squad.

Seriously wish I could take over Moyes' brain for a second just to make United into this:

    ..............De Gea

    Rafael Vidic Ferd/Evans Evra

    ........Thiago/Stroot/Carrick

    Valencia.......................Bale

    ..................Kags

    .............RVP & Lewo

Simple: Sell Nani to slightly help fund the Bale move. Sell Rooney for £25m at least by starting a bidding war between the rich clubs and declaring him for sale. Buy Lewo for £30m max as BD apparently rate him at £25m. Forget Baines for now, he's neither a superstar LB or a priority for us, also Bale can't have Baines overlapping his runs because that's just weird.

Next season go for the LB, RM, RB positions as improvement.

    Thoughts?

The girth of an object is the measurement around it. It is sometimes used by postal services and delivery companies as a basis for pricing. For example, Canada Post requires that an item's length plus girth not exceed a maximum allowed value.[1] For a rectangular box, the girth is 2 * (height + width), i.e. the perimeter of a cross section perpendicular to its length.

I am amused how this site has changed since the voting system came in.
Some posters seem to be more attention seeking then Lady Gaga, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Rihanna, Gaza and Joey Barton combined. This has only been accentuated by mentions in the community report section.

There seems to be a new pattern where people make a very, very, longwinded post throw in a couple of numbers with percentages after it.
Then they have a high discussion rating and go green. Or I believe the 'in' term is hulked.. One poster even has the Hulk as his grav.

I miss the good old days of this site where people did not pretend they know what they are talking about and were not needy and attention seeking.

I have some stats to prove it.....:)

Its nice because it usually shows they are more comfortable to post, nobody is being forced in anyway. On your second point I hope that the community will welcome gravless posters because once upon a time we were all a gravless poster when we first found this site. Of course I am aware that there are a small number of posters that can be a tad snobby in that regard.

I don't think people are trying to seek attention at all. I think your view is a very cynical one as it attempts to judge peoples motivation when they put in a bit of effort. My perspective is that people are more willing to post longer and more Informative posts because now they will no longer be lost as soon as the page disappears. The hot topics section can now preserve good posts for a lot longer to the benefit of the whole community. HC has solved the long standing problem of its comments system and as far as I can tell the vast majority of the community see's this as a massive improvement from the old system.

Beyond Chelsea not needing so many midfielders, why do midfielders continue to go there when it is clear that their first-team appearances will not be too numerous? Unless Mourinho promised Van Ginkel that other midfielders will be sold in the next few weeks, I don't see why he would accept such a transfer. All the Chelsea midfield will hope to make their national team squads ahead of the Workd Cup, and sitting on the bench is not the way to go about it.

Van Ginkel's first interview for Chelski. http://youtube.com/watch?v=kbj1DyvpdmM

    Key highlights:
Q: What are your first impressions, especially of the training complex?
A: Uh yes, it's very good, it's very big, a lot of nice "bitches."

Q: Who are you looking forward to working with?
A: Fernando Torres, the striker. He scores a lot of nice goals. And also John Terry.

    In conclusion:
FT9 will be staying at Chelski.
Van Ginkel is not very bright.

Jozy Altidore to join Sunderland. What happens with Fletcher? (assuming he recovers from his injury-not sure how far away he is). Altidore is a proven goal scorer, 38 goals in 67 for AZ; 17 in 60 for the US National team. If this works out, this season will be amazing. We will be spoilt for choice - striker wise

He has improved a LOT since then. Three goals in the last three US qualifiers, and one against Germany as well. He could well be a prolific striker this season, if Sunderland line up a 4-4-2 with Altidore and Fletcher up top.

I think 6.0 will be right price for him. But then, it will important to see what formation PDC has in mind, 4-5-1 with Sessegnon in the hole, or 4-4-2 with Ses on the right. I'll be looking at the pre-season properly before I think about having him.

      Chelsea's list of first-team midfielders:

      1. Juan Mata
      2. Eden Hazard
      3. Oscar

      5. Kevin de Bruyne

      11. Oriol Romeu
      12. Michael Essien

        Mata
        Hazard
        Oscar
        Schurrle
        Bruyne

        (DM)
        Lampard
        Ramires
        v Ginkel
        Essien

That's good and enough cover I guess. Lampard and Essien are old players, v Ginkel and Ramires pairing is good.

Oscar is a good player who is not made for the EPL. He plays well when he plays for Brazil or in European matches for Chelski but struggles when he plays against English teams.

Chelsea will have to sell some of them or put some out on loan. 13 is just too many.

I know. And sometimes there can be too much depth. There isn't much point having a player like Marin who is only going to sit on the bench the entire season. He should at least go out on loan.

        14. Gael Kakuta (loaned again to Vitesse, July 4th). i can't believe he's still there. currently he's 22 yo. i think he's not needed anymore seeing Chelsea midfielders list now. permanent move is a good solution for him.

Big 18 hours in the TWS game coming up. Forwards like Ronaldo & Messi will be the prime candidates. Plenty of bargains in the rest perhaps?
