With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

Different from the templates teams i have seen.. Either it will hit jackpot or horrible spells casting on your team....

Speroni and Stekelenburg are a bit hmmmmm kind.... not that great

Don't put heavy price on defenders.... spread in other areas.

    Hi,

What is your big hitter strategy?

I am thinking of just going with RVP and Bale. I can use Lambert as my other obvious captain choice.

It gives me these fixtures for those three captains:

cpl, SWA, Nor, CPL, cdf, WBA, SWA, SOU, HULL, ful, HULL, cdf, tot, AST, NEW, ast, W'HAM, hull, STO

This is up to, and including, GW19.

There is only difficult fixture there. I also have Mirallias and van Wolfswinkel (or whoever is in form at that price) to cover.

You will not change the front line uptil GW19 😯

Either you go for RVP or for Bale.... i dun't see working when they are both in the team. You will start panicking if they misfire in starting gameweeks.

I am only confident in Bale, he is a master-class. But i doubt they he will go in Madrid.

You can't predetermine captain choices. it all depends on the form a certain player is in or the defensive instability of the team that he is going play.

I dun't observe pre-season matches before 10 days of PL start :D. It's simple as you can't predict the player from the one month gap. I am not saying that pre-seasons matches are bad observation of choosing players before PL starts.

But you have seen in last couple of seasons, some players are bound to start bad in start of premier league matches where they were playing excellent in pre-season matches.

Someone posted an interesting comment a few days ago about how Moyes ruins his strikers by over-'working' them... Singled Welbeck out for praise as 'hard working' after match the other day deliberately as that's the quality he likes to see in a forward. Could be a worry for RVP owners if his training methods make him more injury prone...

      Lampard & Sissoko

Jose loves him so I can't see any way Frank misses out against Hull on opening day or UTD because it's a big game. I'm tempted to give him the C on opening day.

Sissoko I just have the feeling might do well in the number 10 role and be an early season bandwagon who then gets sold for a profit once his form drops off

Even if Bale goes to Madrid I'm not sure I will get RVP...

Having RVP gets you Snoddy and Jarvis
Having Berb instead as an example gets you Walcott and Coutinho

    Far from straightforward imo

Rvp will be the main man for United this season, if they don't sign forwards line.

Anything United scores will go through Rvp someway or the other... so i won't miss that for sure. The only thing that will restrict him will be Kagawa Form and Position in Moyes team but that depends if Bale goes to Madrid.

If he goes, then i am going for Rvp 99%.... 🙂

So what's the guarantee that Berb will score every week or even get assists, unlike Rvp who will get atleast gets Bonus..

It's fair that while going with RVP i will have £8 less... but you will not have to worry every week... And if in worst case scenario If RVP doesn't get anything you can downgrade him easily. But thing other way around, if you want him you will have to take hits to bring him in.,

So your giving example : I will take a downgrade on defence and get RVP walcott and get Sturridge instead of Coutinho

      Front 8 of:

      Bale Hazard Coutinho Snodgrass Thomas

      Aguero Giroud Berbatov

If Bale leaves then I would get Walcott in for Bale and then use the 2.5m to either upgrade Snodgrass to Silva or improve my defence. What would you do with the extra cash?

Ian Holloway's teams go all out attack so I'd expect them to score goals - unlike QPR. I might still start off with Campaña as my 5th mid and downgrade to 4.5 if necessary.

He might prove to be. - but at the start of season it's probably best to start off with players who are proven performers in the premiership and then transfer to players like Cornelius if he suddenly starts racking up the points... JRod was performing well at the end of last year under the new manager and has looked good in pre-season too... Safer bet for now anyway.

Been thinking about this ... 'Down' arrows - are they necessary?
I understand the need for Homecrowd, and the new system for dealing with trolls etc, but am wondering if the down vote arrows are really needed. Whilst I'm sure the new system is being respected by the majority of community and casual posters, there is still significant abuse of the down vote.
If it is just a question of establishing 'reputation' and the reliability of posts, the up arrow alone will do that job, since people who are considered the most reliable posters will naturally receive more up votes than others.
Since none of us outside of admin can see this 'reputation' anyway until whatever count is reached to take them to a level higher (level 2, 3, whatever), the usefulness of the system as a guide for readers of posts is only marginal at best, whereas the down-side we are seeing - trolls and other idiots abusing the system to down vote perfectly normal posts - is outweighing the benefit IMO.
In any case, the 'Report' button is in place to take care of any really offensive posts or complete time-wasters.
Up votes are fine, and a confidence-booster for regular useful posters to continue the effort - down votes, I would argue, are redundant and could have the opposite effect of demoralising people new to posting, and in the worst case may put people off membership of the site altogether.
    What do you think?

I would argue that if you can't see the level numbers, what is the use of up/down reputation 😉

Not the level numbers, i.e. 2 for me, 1 for you. I am taking about the post score +/-.
I can tell you the whole voting, rep level etc is being looked into thoroughly atm.

make it a tool for admin only you mean? Maybe. Although I have no problem with seeing the vote count, it is a useful indication sometimes for quality posts, I just don't see the need for the minus option since poor posts will naturally just receive a score of 0 ... does that make sense?

Perhaps it can be changed to stay at 0 even if downvoted. No more negative scoring posts. It seems a bored few have decided to see who can get the lowest score. It all makes sense. 🙂

that might work . . . but taking the down arrow away might have a more positive psychological effect? Anyway, I'm glad to hear the issue is being debated and thanks for taking the time to reply

I think that could be a good idea, so it would take away the visible aspect of downvoting and make it a much less satisfying thing for people to do if they're doing it for the wrong reasons. Also some people (naming no names) appear to be thriving on the negative votes - they're troll-feed in a way.

My only concern is as Fantacity points out, the plus votes can be a good incentive to quality posting. To counteract this you could either:
        (a) Have 0 as the minimum score
        (b) Don't show a number at all, but come up with some other way of acknowledging a post which has got a lot of upvotes. Something similar to the stickying maybe?
        (c) Don't make the scores for individual posts at all, but make it easier to obtain a higher 'level' and make this more visible. There are a lot of posters who are at level one whose general standard of posting warrants some kind of visible rep, in my opinion. (On this thread I'd suggest Triggerlips and Holy See as examples.)

Great points Jonny. Will pass this thread onto Mark/Jonty to add to our discussion. A likely change probably to occur before the season starts.

This is a fair point actually. Not all posts are worthy of being reported but would certainly be worthy of a down vote.

Couldn't agree more. Well, I could but I may get down voted if I do! From what I've seen, people's sensible & reasoned opinions getting down voted, which is hardly fair, while a team sheet or a score line getting an up vote. Madness! Down with down voting! Fine post Fanta.

Why does Ramirez only average 68 minutes a match? Is this likely to change?

He's still nicknamed 'sick note' in my mind... Despite his undoubted abilities - i won't be picking him in my team. He seemed very fragile and kept picking up injuries/illness/flying back to South America all of last season...

Wait to see the results of the scan first. If not consider an alternative. Metersacker at 5.5 would save you some money to use elsewhere.
