With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

Yeah, I think he could do fairly well at that price range. Another one to consider would be Dembele if he plays CAM, but West Ham have friendly opening fixtures ^_^

Of all the players linked to other clubs Bale is the one I can't see going because Daniel Levy is one of the most stubborn club directors in the premier league. It feels like a similar situation to Modric a couple of years ago. Bale will go when Daniel Levi is ready to let him go...

At 9.0 he seems like to much of a risk. For an extra 0.5 you could have Walcott or Hazard. Or for 1.0 less Lampard who maybe risked to rotation but takes set pieces.

There is still some decision-making to do. But if I have my way, every single league spot will be open all over again. A lot of regulars come and go, so it's easiest to start all over again. You ultimately want as many active members as much as possible.

But even if we don't open up all spots, there will definitely be at least a few new spots for sure. I can guarantee you will get at least one of them, as even though I have hardly come here during the summers it clear you have been pretty active 🙂

Unknown with Neg's and Kone and Benteke a good punt in an improving Villa side.

Don't get me wrong, I think one of the City strikers will do much better than him. But it's so unpredictable, it could be any one of the four.

I will stick with Silva, and then jump on the correct bandwagon if needed later. With Silva, at least the 5,6 points will hopefully keep rolling in.

    Feedback please chaps:

    Boruc I Mignolet

    Cuellar I Coleman I Clyne I Collins I Chester

    Snodgrass I Bale I Hazard I Mirallas I Thomas

    Negredo I Giroud I Aspas

    2.5 Mil in bank.

Thinking to upgrade Snodgrass to Kagawa but Snoddy got some good early fixtures and being on set pieces definitely one to look for. Happy with defence bar maybe Cuellar can downgrade him to like Parr or Ward. Happy with attack but is unknowns surrounding Negredo & Aspas. Feel that Neg's will play with Aguero in behind but difficult to tell....Aspas a good punt with Suarez out & Sturridge possibly underdone.

    Dissect please.

How much first hand knowledge do you really have of negredo and aspas? If they flop you will only find yourself blaming people on here for recommending them. Better to go with players you know IMO .

I'd also be worried about cuellar. The whole of the Sunderland team is an unknown at the minute

    Morning all!

Im satisfied with my team except a bit worried about my strikers.

    I have Aguero / Anelka / Aspas

Aspas at 7 seems to me as good value, but would it be worth downgrading both and getting RVP?

Aguero has the fixture so I want him but there are cheaper city options.

On a side note, was also considering Gayle.

Gayle will be in the Palace team right now. However they are considering some players which might push him down the order a little. Aspas worth a punt with no Suarez and possibly no Sturridge and has been scoring in pre-season. Anelka's interesting, always scores whoever he plays for but think he might be prone to rotation - maybe track his progress through the pre-season. I have Negredo myself for City cover but with the talent they got always a problem trying to see how they going to play all these good players together, they all rotation risks but think Aguero will play.

        Sissoko: Raw score: 3.96 pts/game, 3.45 BPS/game,
        Snodgrass: Raw score: 3.8 pts/game, 3.74 BPS/game

Have to favour snoddy even over the 0.5mil price

Not much between them expect a lot of sissokos scores came from playing 'in the hole' many predict he will follow suit from later in the season where he dropped a little deeper.

I'm not sure i trust him as a consistent fpl performer. Had him when he first exploded onto the scene at Newcastle but he faded very fast after that and kept hold of him for too long hoping he'd re-find first 2 GW form. Not for me this season unless something changes dramatically...

    Mignolet

    hello all.

good to be back for another season of pain and suffering. i am leery of spending too much time on the boards preseason, persuasion is rampant in these parts. want to avoid the trappings of the dreaded template.

but i cant resist coming here to review and discuss the latest transfers and prospects. so i am in the process now of training myself to scroll past RMTs with clinical precision.

otherwise, i have much to catch up on. outside of Spurs camp, i'm pretty much in the dark on everything outside of the major headlines. makes me a bit peevish to participate in discussions. nothing is more annoying than a group discussion where one bloke clearly isnt up to speed on the topic at hand yet feels compelled to throw his blatantly uneducated opinion into the fray.

no sir, not me. i plan to stay quiet for a spell, soaking in all the knowledge i can, then regurgitating it at a later date, playing it off like i knew it all along. this builds credibility.

im saying all of this because the truth is, last season was a DISASTER. a Sharknado, if you will.
If Ygritte (sp?) from Game of Thrones was here right now, she would say to me, "You know NOTHING, Fuzzy Warbles." and she would be right. and i would then give her the old in-out in-out, proper.

and there you have it. now then.....educate me.

The green block of comments (usually with stats, interesting questions) are called sticky questions.

When you write something amazing (bunch of needless stats 😉 ) , or if the mods really like you, then your topic becomes hot 😉

Not certain of pens yet but if he gets them he is my tip to be Holloway's adam this season. Garvan has always been mentioned as a possible premier league player and Irish international with only his professionalism and athleticism being questioned. I think he will be one of those players that actually look better playing at a higher standard.

That said I'm not getting him myself currently as I prefer gayle as my gamble/punt this year. Could change if confirmed garvan has pens.
