The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

Registered users can click here to upgrade their account.

New users can click here to sign up.

For further details on the benefits offered by our membership, view this page.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Wandering if I should add more Chelsea/Villa players to take advantage of the double game week?
    Squad is as follows

    GK: Guzan and Foster
DEF: Bains, Koscielny, Collins, Clyne, Parr
MID: Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Snodgrass, Schneiderlin
    FWD: Aguero, Lambert, Anelka

    Any advice?

Not too hard to add him in if he stays in the country and gets off to a flyer. Downgrade Bains or Aguero and trade one of my three expensive mids for him.

Hazard and lukaku. Hazard is a keeper for the start of the season, see how mourinho lines up chelsea before deciding to stick or twist on lukaku. Struggling with benteke - he might be an option but im expecting liverpool to do well in the first few games so im going with sturridge instead.

Wouldn't take much changing to swap out lambert for Lukaku. But massive hit if he doesn't get the nod over Torres, Ba or potentially Rooney.

Given massive Chelsea ownership are we going to see the price of their players plummet after the DGW?

i seem to remember a similar occasion when price rises/fallers were suspended for a day or two to stop the prices all going out of kilter. Am imagining this or did it happen? If it dosent then some of the Chelsea boys could drop upto half a million before GW4

Foster and boruc gives great fixtures. Cant promise clean sheets tho.

Another option for the same price is mignolet + a keeper for 4.0. The 4.0 wont start, but you get a quality keeper who should. Some people hate this strategy, so think before you choose it. Good luck.

Ive stuck with silva and sturridge, and went for two heavy hitters at the back. But i like your team. It has a great balance and if pellegrini doesnt tinker with strikers then i think youre on to a winner.

One other thing - gk + clyne => you might be doubling up in defence occasionally, particularly with sunderlands rough opening fixtures.

I think they already started spending the money with Soldado. Paulinho, Soldado, Chadli, and then getting in return Contrao and Di Mario = Bale approximately.

Long time player, but not as expert as many on this site? Understand the 343 tendencies, but am struggling with the following. I'm not going rvp so will have 3 big MFs (bale, hazard and Wally like most). But feel like mirallas and snoddy are super, super value and don't want to pass on either - particularly as compared to mid-priced strikers that seem risky to me (RvW, jrod, Kone, etc). Am I crazy to use a 352 out of the gate ( I like gayle as my bench fodder or does 343 usually win?). Thanks everyone

No man, dont worry about the formation , just pick the players you think will score better. If you prefer an extra mid over a fwd then just go for it. I agree on Snoddy but not mirallas cos 7.5 seems expensive to me.
But as I said, just pull the trigger.

Nope. Not crazy at all. Good thinkin. I am going 3-4-3 but only because i have 4 heavy hitters and a throwaway mid. I'm finding it tough to pass on anelka as value upfront tho. Palace lost 3-0 to Crawley tonight i think, and im sure gayle played. Anelka has bagged a brace, set up goals in pre season and got man of the match tonight. At 0.5 extra he seems worth it if you can find it.

For what its worth, i had gayle until a few nights ago.

Funny, just saw the palace score and had the same thought !! You're going throwaway mid AND Anelka? Means you are tarting one of those two every week and not just for home games against bottom table teams? That seems risky to me...

I think it really depends on the players. you just need to compare the differences so maybe it's mirallas + gayle vs kone + thomas or something like that.....

and I think that 352 can be viable though it's difficult because a cheap forward is often more than a cheap mid. also I may be wrong but it seems to me that 352 usually works better over a shorter time period whereas 343 is a better long term option. I may be totally wrong on that though

That's exactly the comparison I'm doing (although might prefer Koren over thomas personally) kone feels riskier to me than mirallas, rather wait and see the action go through him. Last year year the MFs ar everton and Wigan were friskier than the strikers, not sure Kone is good enough to change that....

already have van persie(fixture proof) bale aguero walcott hazard

you may say defense is weak but there is every possibily that someone like aguero can score a hatrick against newcomers cardiff n hull

The graphs in that post are awesome, the conclusions are not.

Yes, people in the top50K and the top100 play their wildcards mostly in the same weeks in the same proportions. But the general similarity between graphs 1-4 only just shows that the wildcard timing is not the most important factor in this game. If you play your WC at the wrong time, when nobody else does it's not the end of the world and you still have a chance to break into the top 10K/ the top 1K/ the top 100. That's what the similarity is all about.

Now let's take a deeper look at graph 5. This graph is the most important. Look at it and compare the dark blue line (1st wildcard for top 50000) and the pink line (first wildcard for top 100) for the January window (GW 22 till GW26). Approximate values:
    GW22: 11% vs 24%
    GW23: 4% vs 6%
    GW24: 5% vs 8%
    GW25: 3% vs 5%
GW26: both lines go to zero

    TOTAL: 23% vs 43%

    It means that
    - within the top 100, 43% of players played kept their Wildcard at least till the January window
    - within the top 50000, 23% of players played kept their Wildcard at least till the January window
    i.e. there is a 20% difference

During the first half of the season, there were only two GWs when the pink line is higher than other lines: GW4 and GW8 (by around 2%). These were the international breaks.

Conclusion: last season, playing the wildcard in the second part of the season or during the international breaks increased the chances to break from the top50K into the top100. Comparing the top 50 K and the top 100, the percentage of those who played their wildcard in these gameweeks was almost 25% more within the top100 than within the top 50K.

This just confirms that it's a good idea to either play your wildcard during the international breaks or to keep it as long as possible. It slightly increases your chances to break into the top 100. But it's definitely not the decision that will determine your whole season.

I dont see any sense in any of this.
Its all described as if 'when' you play your WC is the most important thing and mentions nothing of who you bring in, take out, captain etc.

Its having the right players at the right time that counts. You dont 'need' a WC to do this.
The WC increases the options you can make to reach this nirvana but its also as likely that you can make a bad transfer as a good one.

Play the WC whenever you want, just make the right transfers

I think you underestimate the power the WC can have. If you closely read what Smarty Pants wrote you would see that he actually says that the WC is not the only thing that determines your success in FPL, but rather he is describing how playing it at the right time, namely the international break or the DGW's at the end of the season can greatly improve your chances of a higher rank.

        Nice post SP

I read the post mate but I dont agree is all.
For example most people agree that a good start is crucial.
Those who start well dont WC in GW 3. Those that start poorly do WC early.
The success after GW 3 then is NOT because some WC'd and others didnt. I could WC in GW3 and have the same team as someone who didnt. Its about having the right players

If I'm still not getting it then please explain to me how 'when' I WC will make my season in 2013-14.

Then perhaps it is a reflection that the top players in the game tend to get off to a better start therefore don't need to WC in the first half of the season.

There is no decision that will make your season. The season is made by all of your decisions. The time of playing your wildcard is only one of them.

You might have a point here though. The higher percentage of those who wait among the very best players may be a result of a good start and the lack of necessity to play their WC early.

The higher percentage during international breaks is definitely a result of planning and the one that apparently slightly helps to become the best.

No, just look at the last sentence or the first paragraph.

'mentions nothing of who you bring in, take out, captain etc'
Yes, this whole post is only about the timing of playing the wildcard.

'Play the WC whenever you want, just make the right transfers'
I'm comparing the difference between the best players (the top 100) and the good players (the top 50K) with respect to the time when they prefer to play their WC. This difference is rather significant. So, to a very limited extent, but it matters.

Who will be this season's Carl Jenkinson? Before you fall off your chair laughing, the young right-back picked up a few clean sheets and rose a fair amount in value. His cheap price and starting-status cleared up some valuable cash to splurge on other options.

Jenkinson was a replacement for a normally starting yet pricier option (Sagna). There aren't many Jenkinson-esque options at present, but if injuries do emerge before the season begins, picking up a short-term cheapie DF from a top team can pay off.

Jenkinson himself could be a possibility. Sagna to lose his place this season? Bertrand could push Cole a bit as well. Although in both circumstances they won't get enough game time to justify a punt. It would require an injury to their senior team mates.
