The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

Registered users can click here to upgrade their account.

New users can click here to sign up.

For further details on the benefits offered by our membership, view this page.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cole if you want two guaranteed starts and no attacking returns.
Luiz if you don't mind that he might not be absolutely nailed on, but will have a great chance of attacking returns.

    RMT DRIVE BY

    Mignolet (4.0)

Cole, PerMert, Coleman (Parr, B Turner)

    Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Coutinho, Snodgrass

    Benteke, Berbatov (Anelka)

i dont think its anything mind blowing. I suppose its the "no bale around, rvp too expensive for my taste team". some pretty safe, reliable names there that i would hope at least wont be a total GW1 dud. plenty of player movement and such will probably result in a redraft but if the season started tomorrow, what do you think? glaring omissions? General feeling is that a City player is probably a must with their first 4 but does anyone think that anyone other than Augero and Silva are nailed on? Is it a viable strategy to take a risk on Augero because, with his value, he best facilitates a move for RVP in GW 4?

Only Augero and Silva in the attacking areas of Man City looked to be nailed on.

Silva was on fire in the first half yesterday, constantly creating chances and as soon as he came off the game kind of just died down.

I like the Mirallas pick but not with Yaya, for the same money you can get Kagawa.

True, but less inclined to until the situation with Rooney clears up. Throw in Kagawa's patchy form from last season and Moyes' tactics then it becomes more difficult to pick him

Here's MT for you all to R:

    Ruddy (Marshall)
    Coleman Luiz Kosc (Rat Clyne)
    Bale Hazard Snodgrass Jarvis (Thomas)
    Lukaku Aguero J-Rod
    + 1.0m in the bank.

DGW exit strategy: Lukaku - Sturridge, Luiz - City defender, bench Hazard.

I'm wondering about my defence - I'll have 3 defenders I could easily start every week, so should I downgrade Rat and Clyne to a couple of 4.0s? Or keep them there for when one of my big 3 has a tricky fixture and rotate one of them in?

Looks like a solid enough team, with a sound exit strategy. Only worries I would have is the rotation in the city strikers, though it may be worth the slight risk as Aguero will most likely get the most game time and has very nice fixtures early on. Switching Clyne and Rat to 4.0 defenders would be helpful as it would bring more budget to upgrade others however leaves no fallback option if there are injuries or suspensions to your squad. You may be better off downgrading one to a 4.0 and keep one as they are as insurance.

Quite defence-heavy - if you've got Mert/Coleman/Evra do you need Toure as well? Also, Jaask is expensive for WHM coverage in defence - you'd be better getting Scezcney or De Gea in goal and downgrading Mert or Evra to a West Ham defence to save some cash for the same coverage.

Fair point, i was looking at Baines, everyone seems quiet on him atm, possibly cos of the cost? So put in Coleman instead, especially if he is going to be fairly attacking. De gea would keep the Man U coverage, something I don't feel i have enough of. I'll have a think n re-jig.

Brouc probably as it stands. Think Marshall will be the top scoring 4.5er over the course of he season, but wouldn't get him with his his start.

Adrian has been playing West Hams friendlies over Jussi, if he is first choice, he'll be a bargain. Likewise Robles at Everton

Im hearing alone of buzz around coleman but what about baines?

Anyone thing the goal/assist baines brings is worth an additional 2.5 mil?

he is the 2nd most chosen defender after Mert.

That 2.5 mil better spent elsewhere IMO. Buzz around Coleman stems from Martinez' propensity to play 352 so Coleman should get forward more in a RWB role.

The thinking is that Coleman will be just like Baines on the other wing. For 2.5m less. But pens/fks are still a big pull for Baines. Remember that corners aren't such a good thing with the new assist rules - a defensive header out before a goal from a corner would mean no assist for the corner taker.

It looks fairly decent although I'm starting to finally realise that there's no need to have RVP from GW1 yet and just to get him around GW4. I'd swap him for Aguero if I were you. Also I prefer Anelka over JRod but that's just personal preference. Plus, try and fit in Walcott 😉

Looks like a strong lineup, 4 players in the DGW, do you plan on using your WC for GW3 or just benching a couple and doing a couple transfers? Can't see too much wrong with this side at all tbh, very strong front 7 and you've still managed to get strong coverage in your defence.
