Liverpool maintain their 100% pre-season record with Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas both amongst the goals once again. Shola Ameobi continues to find the net for Newcastle, while Martin Jol admits he’s in the market for a new forward after Fulham fall to defeat at Werder Bremen. Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho gives Fantasy managers plenty to ponder after admitting he may move Juan Mata to the right flank in the season ahead.

Thailand 0 Liverpool 3
Brendan Rodgers was able to recall Kolo Toure and Philippe Coutinho after both missed the previous match with minor knocks. The Reds lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Toure partnering Daniel Agger at centre-half, while Steven Gerrard was the most advanced central midfielder as Joe Allen sat alongside Lucas in front of the back-four. Coutinho and Fabio Borini flanked new boy Iago Aspas in the front three and the Brazilian continued his impressive pre-season form with his third goal in as many appearances after waltzing through the home side’s defence. Coutinho then turned provider for the Reds’ second, teeing up Aspas for his third pre-season strike before the latter laid on the assist for Steven Gerrard to chip home the final goal.

Rodgers made just four changes in the second period – a suggestion, perhaps, that he’s looking to implement a settled line-up with less than three weeks until the season kicks off, albeit with question marks still surrounding the future of Luis Suarez and current fitness of Daniel Sturridge. It’s four wins from four now for the Merseysiders and with a clean sheet accrued in each of those victories, Toure – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – continues to look an enticing option, having started each of the three games he has been available for ahead of Martin Skrtel in the centre of defence.

Blackpool 0 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew trialled a change of formation for yesterday’s narrow win at Bloomfield Road. The Magpies boss moved from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 and selected Mike Williamson alongside Steven Taylor in central defence – Fabricio Coloccini was suspended after receiving his marching orders in the previous friendly, while Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was afforded just nine minutes off the bench late on. With Moussa Sissoko fielded in central midfield, Sylvain Marveaux and Jonas Gutierrez patrolled the flanks, while Yoan Gouffran continued in his recent role up top, with Shola Amoebi also getting the nod. Ameobi was the visitors’ goal hero yet again – he volleyed home a Williamson assist to find the net for the third successive match. Pardew made just four alterations as the match progressed, though Hatem Ben Arfa and Cisse were omitted from the squad as the duo continue to build up their match-fitness.

Werder Bremen 1 Fulham 0
The Cottagers 100% pre-season record came to an end in Germany yesterday afternoon. Martin Jol opted for Kieran Richardson over John Arne Riise at left-back in a defence that also contained new boy Fernando Amorebieta. Derek Boateng and Steve Sidwell were named in central midfield, with Ashkan Dejagah and Alex Kacaniklic handed the wing roles, while Bryan Ruiz and Dimitar Berbatov were once again selected as the front two. Jol’s post-match admission that he’s on the lookout for a new striker may concern the latter’s would-be suitors, though, with a new face up front potentially forcing the Bulgarian into a more withdrawn role, while Ruiz’s versatility could see him shift to the flank. The Cottagers boss also gave an update on Kacaniklic’s injury and indicated he is looking to add to the midfield area before the campaign gets underway:

“Berbatov was good, but he can’t do everything and we needed to get in behind. We will try to get someone up front. We need a few more goals, since Clint [Dempsey] left we do not have enough goals in us, so we are working every day to get someone in. We have some high quality players in consideration and we would like another midfielder as well…Kača has made a lot of big steps and progress with us. But he had to come off with a hamstring injury. Hopefully it is not too bad, but he may be out for a couple of weeks. Mesca came on and looked good, he was probably our best player on the day even though he has only played with us twice. That was positive….Today we looked a bit rusty from the start. But I can forgive the players at this stage as we will go to Austria and work hard, train hard and we will do something in the transfer market and be totally different by the start of the season.”

In Other News
Jose Mourinho hasn’t been short of sound bites for Fantasy managers to mull over this summer and the Chelsea manager offered another intriguing insight for us to consider yesterday. Discussing Juan Mata’s role at Stamford Bridge for the season ahead, Mourinho hinted that he may be set to utilise the Spaniard on the right more often:

“I have my idea about him, about where he produces better and where he has more difficulty. We will try to help him perform better in those situations. I’ve always liked a right-sided player to be left-footed. I started with Robben and Duff, then Pandev at Inter, and Di Maria and Ozil. It’s more than a tendency. I like wingers coming in on the inside for the penetrative movement, for the pass, for the shot. And Juan is the only player we have to do that on the right. On the left we have Hazard, Victor Moses, Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle. Juan is also very comfortable playing as a No10. In between these two positions, he has a lot to give to the team.”

Having rolled out a 4-3-3 system to great effect in the 8-1 win over Indonesia All Stars last week, Mourinho clearly has a viable alternative to the 4-2-3-1 which has been Chelsea’s default formation in recent times. Mata’s role in “the hole” is perhaps not as nailed-on as it has been since his move to the Premier League – Mourinho’s failure to mention Oscar as an alternative for the wide roles suggests the Brazilian could benefit from a more central role this time out. While this may see us reassess Oscar’s potential – particularly with a double Gameweek 1 on his agenda – an occasional shift to 4-3-3 would perhaps be detrimental to his prospects, with the likes of Frank Lampard and Marco Van Ginkel fielded as the most advanced central midfielder, with Mata on the right.

    2 Questions re: Bale

1 - is there anyone who thinks Spurs shouldnt accept the reported £51m cash with Coentrao and Di Maria deal. This looks like a no brainer to me - cant understand why Spurs wouldnt accept if this has been offered

2 - If Bale does stay do people think that his up coming season will be better or worse than his most recent season? Personally I dont feel he will do as well again this season.

      1. Does anyone think this offer has actually been made? These player plus cash deals really seldomly occur compared to the number of them that are reported as possible in the media. Eto'o and Ibra deal is the only one off the top of my head

      2. Better, I think it'll be tight between himself and RVP for top scorer. What's your for thinking his output will decrease?

Yossi - fair point but there have been a few over the years such as when Luiz went to chelsea for Matic and £20m - what I was getting at was that if that offer had been made then I dont think anyone (except maybe Levy) would turn it down. Bale is not worth £80m. Ronaldo was a far better player than him when he was sold for that money imo.

As for next season I just dont feel Bale will be as effective. He scored a lot of long distance goals last season - that will be hard to replicate. Also teams will plan to nullify him more than they did last time.

            couldn't agree more.

85m is mega for spurs.... and not so mega for real, much like beckham, they will recoup a significant chunk on merchandise etc etc, which spurs won't. like levy's inner scrooge though - i'd like them to milk real for €120+ though

also really don't think di maria and coentrao fill the void of £30m.

            cash is king.

personally I would rather get players than Cash as if Spurs were to receive £85million then any player that they then went to purchase would be sold to them at a vastly inflated price eg. Carroll to liverpool.

I think Coentrao and Di Maria for £30m is good value in todays world.

                plus their wage bills?

can't think of many exchanged players who have been worthwhile (in terms of playing records rather than cash). levy should be lining up replacements as we speak. another reason for stalling.

Levy is an extremely shrewd financial operator, with a penchant for brinksmanship. He'll undoubtedly want the price to be driven up further. Considering Real Madrid's financial prowess and the nature of the club as a whole, I'm sure the offers will continue to escalate.

From what I saw of Bale and considering his age, I'd imagine he'd have an even more productive year this year as he appears to be 'on the up'. He doesn't appear to be overly distracted by the rumours.

don't really agree....it's whether the 85m can improve the likes of dawson, rose, defoe, ade etc. lose a bale, improve half the team - long term, makes a bit of sense.....it's highly unlikely he'll ever sign a new contract at spurs - so get top dollar now while you still have him.....

hard to beat - i think Man Utd should aim a little higher than that.

This is a massive season for Utd. If they dont win anything and are out of the title race at "squeaky bum time" then the pressure will be on Moyes.

I also think they will struggle if they dont make some midfield signings.

Disagree, especially if the judgement is based on pre-season; a tactic which is as effective in predicting team performances in the league as rolling a dice. Most teams regard them as part of a physical conditioning program, and not necessarily a team performance one.

If you mean on their performance last year; undoubtedly a team missing their (and the league's) top scorer is bound to suffer. However over the last quarter of a decade they've shown their resilience as a team and proved they have a sufficiently strong squad to cope even when the 'bigger' players go through dry spells or leave.

Is Anelka nailed on? More importantly is he a good option?

He was in my first team and then I moved him out to upgrade to Berbatov.

Ok, so this is the team I'd pretty much decided to go into GW1 with:

    Coleman / Ivanovic / Mertesacker / Shaw / YANGA-MBIWA

    Benteke / Lukaku / Gayle

But IF Bale goes to Real, should I switch Bale and Brady to:

    A) Walcott & Mirallas
    B) Walcott & Pienaar (leaving £0.5m to up Yanga-Mbiwa to a £5.0m def.)
    C) Silva & Kagawa
    D) Silva & Mirallas (leaving £0.5m to up Yanga-Mbiwa to a £5.0m def.)

Thoughts on doubling down on Liverpool defense?

Toure and Mignolet are both fantastic value and I can see them keeping a boat load of clean sheets to start the season.

I was set on this but if I ever wanted to double on Liverpool attack I wouldn't be able to. And I think Migs' save points will dramatically reduce this year meaning budget keepers could give the better value.

All it would take would be to shift Toure out (assuming you'd want to keep Migs) and it's problem solved.

He doesn't, I've just switched over to getting budget keepers. I don't want to lock-out a Liverpool spot in my team.

I thought about this too, but it's really not that big of a deal.

        Look at this example:

        Mignolet - 3 saves, 3 saves, 3 saves
        Foster - 4 saves, 7 saves, 5 saves

Foster gets a total of 1 more save point that Mignolet.

Then you break down the clean sheet totals and based on last season's data, Mignolet cleans the floor with Foster and Boruc. He'll pick up 5 more clean sheets at least imo considering that you'll pick the wrong keeper some weeks and they'll both get a cleanie some weeks.

I think I'm going with Triggerlips' idea of Marshall/Boruc. I really can't spare the additional 0.5m in my current set-up! And long-term Mignolet won't get that much more than a rotation imo.

Good point Camzy, that sixth CS is often just missed. Getting nine prob means conceding 3+ goals, which would mark down a pt for a GK.

But I'm still thinking CHesney/ Merte double, with either Coleman/Toure post DGW.

Manchester City have increased competition for their attacking positions and a new manager. All three lack recent form in the league, considering Aguero didn't have a great season last year, and both Negredo and Jovetic are new to Premier League.

All three will tie up a substantial amount of your funds, which may prove all the more infuriating if they should have a disastrous start to the season, or perhaps less dramatically, an infuriating ten minute cameo while The Engineer looks at his blueprints for the season.

      Best to wait and see.

Signed up to be a FFS member but can't seem to use the RMT feature, therefore I shall ask the wisdom of you on here. (Ignore username, it's to hide my identity as I know many friends are on here and don't want to be giving away my tactics!)

    Boruc
    Kaboul, Luiz, Toure (Collins, Ward)
    Walcott, Bale, Oscar, Silva (Barkley)
    Bony, Lukaku, RvW

I plan to do the following transfers:
Lukaku-->Negredo/Dzeko/Jovetic in GW2/3 depending on who is starting most often
Silva--> Coutinho in GW 2/3 to give me cover of ManC & Liverpool.

Thoughts on this team? I see Kaboul starting with Dawson and then Vert moving to LB, Oscar in 'the hole' would be great and RvW is just a punt.

Vety won't play LB much, battle of the Rose / BAEs. BUt his fitness for early GWs def in doubt. I would think Kaboul will start alongside Daws in which case, but beyond, they'll be fair rotation of all 4 CBs.

Oscar is my darkhorse for DGW too, but trying to squeeze Haz in too, no Lukaku.

I still think Kaboul is a W1 starter and through the season, is better than Dawson in the air and has superior pace, and at only 5m is a bargain!

Not too fussed about Hazard as can't afford him and after the DGW the fixtures (ManU away and blank) aren't good.

    With the annual influx of quality summer players some of which have huge question marks over their gametime, ability to play well in the premiership etc. I have decided to plan for an early wildcard for the following reasons;

    1. Maximise exposue to DGW
    2. Maximise exposure defences with an easy start (Lpool, City, Arsenal)
    3. Capitalise on the price rises for players that explode early. I'll be watching many players like Jovetic, Negredo, Aguero, Kagawa, Zaha, Bony, Aspas etc. for how they fit in to each team, indications of likely gametime etc. Last season gameweek 1-3 was an excellent example of the mixed fortunes of hotly tipped summer signings (compare Kagawa, Michu and Hazard)
    4. To select a team for gameweek 1 (and maybe 2) means that it is unlikely that benched playera will br called upon thus maximising the funds invested in the starting XI.
    5. It looks increasingly likely that bale is going which strengthens the argument for including RVP from gameweek 4 onwards. I see it will be pretty hard maximise thr easy start for the previously mentioned teams, maximise DGW cover AND manage to incorporate RVP after 3 FT. Being 14m it will probably require major restructuring to bring him in.

    With this all in mind I havr come up with the following with a gameweek 1/2 wildcard in mind;

    Mignolet (Given)

    Koscielny Toure Zabaleta (Parr Chester)

    Coutinho Lampard Hazard(c) Walcott Silva

    Benteke Lukaku (Gayle)

Hmm fair point. Remember Tosey doing it last year and really regretting it. Seems a waste when you see the progress that some made around the FA Cup QF DGWs later in the season. I've always gone in first international break but going to try and hold it this year.

That is hilarious. He has scored some cracking right footed goals, I was actually surprised last season how well he strikes a ball with his right.

          Are you a troll?

If you want to watch a one footed player just look at Giggs! Still, didn't hold him back much 🙂

I really don't understand all this hype about Coutinho, yes he is a very good player, but he's not in the same league as Walcott/Mata/Hazard when it comes down to points return

If you want a Liverpool player, go for Sturridge (he will be fit for start of season)

Sturridge has a much greater 'points per game' return than Coutinho, as do the midfielders mentioned above.

I understand he's had a good preseason, but he's not been playing teams that will give such easy opportunities. Sturridge has proven he gets points returns against prem sides

Conversely though, Sturridge has had no pre-season. That's putting me off. We don't know how he fits into the team.

Coutinho is a good pick. Agreed he may not have the same explosive returns up front, but he's proven himself pretty creative and can finish.

Coutinho certainly has ability but he isn't proven like the other mids you name are. For that reason he won't be in my team at the start of the season ahead of the likes of Walcott.

I certainly dont see the Coutinho attraction.

Better Liverpool options imo and I would prefer a liverpool defender over an attacker personally.

Sturridge has proven he can score. But there is no way he can be match fit for the start of the season.

    RMT please 😀

    Mignolet // Davis

    Ivanovic // Mert // Shaw // Collins // Chester

    Bale // Hazard // Walcott // Snodgrass // Mirallas

    Sturridge // JRod // Anelka

If Soldado comes in at 9.0m I will do a straigh swap for Sturridge

    Also
    A) Silva + Koren

    B) Snodgrass + Mirallas
