Liverpool maintain their 100% pre-season record with Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas both amongst the goals once again. Shola Ameobi continues to find the net for Newcastle, while Martin Jol admits he’s in the market for a new forward after Fulham fall to defeat at Werder Bremen. Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho gives Fantasy managers plenty to ponder after admitting he may move Juan Mata to the right flank in the season ahead.

Thailand 0 Liverpool 3
Brendan Rodgers was able to recall Kolo Toure and Philippe Coutinho after both missed the previous match with minor knocks. The Reds lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Toure partnering Daniel Agger at centre-half, while Steven Gerrard was the most advanced central midfielder as Joe Allen sat alongside Lucas in front of the back-four. Coutinho and Fabio Borini flanked new boy Iago Aspas in the front three and the Brazilian continued his impressive pre-season form with his third goal in as many appearances after waltzing through the home side’s defence. Coutinho then turned provider for the Reds’ second, teeing up Aspas for his third pre-season strike before the latter laid on the assist for Steven Gerrard to chip home the final goal.

Rodgers made just four changes in the second period – a suggestion, perhaps, that he’s looking to implement a settled line-up with less than three weeks until the season kicks off, albeit with question marks still surrounding the future of Luis Suarez and current fitness of Daniel Sturridge. It’s four wins from four now for the Merseysiders and with a clean sheet accrued in each of those victories, Toure – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – continues to look an enticing option, having started each of the three games he has been available for ahead of Martin Skrtel in the centre of defence.

Blackpool 0 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew trialled a change of formation for yesterday’s narrow win at Bloomfield Road. The Magpies boss moved from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 and selected Mike Williamson alongside Steven Taylor in central defence – Fabricio Coloccini was suspended after receiving his marching orders in the previous friendly, while Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was afforded just nine minutes off the bench late on. With Moussa Sissoko fielded in central midfield, Sylvain Marveaux and Jonas Gutierrez patrolled the flanks, while Yoan Gouffran continued in his recent role up top, with Shola Amoebi also getting the nod. Ameobi was the visitors’ goal hero yet again – he volleyed home a Williamson assist to find the net for the third successive match. Pardew made just four alterations as the match progressed, though Hatem Ben Arfa and Cisse were omitted from the squad as the duo continue to build up their match-fitness.

Werder Bremen 1 Fulham 0
The Cottagers 100% pre-season record came to an end in Germany yesterday afternoon. Martin Jol opted for Kieran Richardson over John Arne Riise at left-back in a defence that also contained new boy Fernando Amorebieta. Derek Boateng and Steve Sidwell were named in central midfield, with Ashkan Dejagah and Alex Kacaniklic handed the wing roles, while Bryan Ruiz and Dimitar Berbatov were once again selected as the front two. Jol’s post-match admission that he’s on the lookout for a new striker may concern the latter’s would-be suitors, though, with a new face up front potentially forcing the Bulgarian into a more withdrawn role, while Ruiz’s versatility could see him shift to the flank. The Cottagers boss also gave an update on Kacaniklic’s injury and indicated he is looking to add to the midfield area before the campaign gets underway:

“Berbatov was good, but he can’t do everything and we needed to get in behind. We will try to get someone up front. We need a few more goals, since Clint [Dempsey] left we do not have enough goals in us, so we are working every day to get someone in. We have some high quality players in consideration and we would like another midfielder as well…Kača has made a lot of big steps and progress with us. But he had to come off with a hamstring injury. Hopefully it is not too bad, but he may be out for a couple of weeks. Mesca came on and looked good, he was probably our best player on the day even though he has only played with us twice. That was positive….Today we looked a bit rusty from the start. But I can forgive the players at this stage as we will go to Austria and work hard, train hard and we will do something in the transfer market and be totally different by the start of the season.”

In Other News
Jose Mourinho hasn’t been short of sound bites for Fantasy managers to mull over this summer and the Chelsea manager offered another intriguing insight for us to consider yesterday. Discussing Juan Mata’s role at Stamford Bridge for the season ahead, Mourinho hinted that he may be set to utilise the Spaniard on the right more often:

“I have my idea about him, about where he produces better and where he has more difficulty. We will try to help him perform better in those situations. I’ve always liked a right-sided player to be left-footed. I started with Robben and Duff, then Pandev at Inter, and Di Maria and Ozil. It’s more than a tendency. I like wingers coming in on the inside for the penetrative movement, for the pass, for the shot. And Juan is the only player we have to do that on the right. On the left we have Hazard, Victor Moses, Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle. Juan is also very comfortable playing as a No10. In between these two positions, he has a lot to give to the team.”

Having rolled out a 4-3-3 system to great effect in the 8-1 win over Indonesia All Stars last week, Mourinho clearly has a viable alternative to the 4-2-3-1 which has been Chelsea’s default formation in recent times. Mata’s role in “the hole” is perhaps not as nailed-on as it has been since his move to the Premier League – Mourinho’s failure to mention Oscar as an alternative for the wide roles suggests the Brazilian could benefit from a more central role this time out. While this may see us reassess Oscar’s potential – particularly with a double Gameweek 1 on his agenda – an occasional shift to 4-3-3 would perhaps be detrimental to his prospects, with the likes of Frank Lampard and Marco Van Ginkel fielded as the most advanced central midfielder, with Mata on the right.

    Hi guys,

I’ve put together some data from last season and prepared a small comparison tool where one can see the performance of specific group of players and compare them based on certain criteria.

The excel file can be found here:

    http://wikisend.com/download/919080/pirate's FPL Comparison Tool.xlsx

    That criteria are the below:

    - Price (specific or range)
    - Gameweek (specific or range)
    - Position
    - Tom 10 teams’ players
    - Top 5 teams’ players
    - Bottom 10 teams’ players
    - Minutes Played (per match) [if 45 minutes chosen for instance, it means that the performance of somebody who played less than that in a game will not be taken into account in the results]
    - Top Scoring 100 players
    - Home/Away

    It looks as below:
    http://s12.postimg.org/hperocnt9/Tool1.jpg

So there three main things to do:
    1) Change the criteria on the grey cells

    2) See the box and whisker plot.
    a. In the example above we see that between the two selections the only difference is the Home/Away performance. For the top ones(Home)
    i. the lowest 25% of performances received up to 2 points.
ii. The next 25% (the pink box) was from 2 to 3 points. (So, 50% of the players that cost that money performed to a max of 3 points at Home)
iii. The next 25% is the green box goes from 3 to 6.
iv. Finally 25% of the players scored from 6 to 15.
    v. Their average points was 4.2 with a standard deviation (st.dev.) of 3
vi. The average bonus points were 0.5.
vii. 122 records were used that came from 14 unique players

    b. For the away performances:
    i. the lowest 25% of performances received up to 2 points.
ii. The next 25% (the pink box which is not even visible) was again up to 2 points. So at least 25% of them scored just 2 points. Aggregated, 50% of them scored up to 2 points. Slightly lower than when played home.
iii. The next 25% bucket (from 50% to 75%) the score goes from 2 to 5. Again a bit lower than home.
iv. The best 25% away performances received a score between 5 and 18.
    v. The average points were also lower=3.8 but had a similar st. deviation (of 3)
vi. The average bonus was 0.4
vii. Total of 121 records with 14 unique players as well.

As you can see you can change things in the criteria to make this more meaningful for your own observations. For instance you might want to look only at top 5 sides when you look at expensive defenders etc…

    3) Next to that there are is another graph where you can see the average points per gameweek. Gives a nice quick picture of the seasonal volatility.

There are two more tabs with some tables that show the difference of performance between home and away just for you to take a quick look.

*2012-13 data used. Note that the prices used in every calculation were dynamic and were then rounded to 0.5. So if a player cost 5.0 for 2 gameweeks and 5.3 for the rest 36. His performance when he used to cost 5.0 will be in that group, while the other 36 will be grouped under the 5.5 one.
** For those not familiar with the box & whisker plot and the median logic, I suggest you take a look somewhere (e.g. wiki) before you start playing around with the tool.
*** Use Microsoft Office 2010 (2003/2007 will NOT work properly)

Let me know if anything is unclear.

    Cheers,
    pirate

My two cents about how many DGW players one should start with.

I have seen many on here saying that 3 is the absolute max that they will have, while others have said 2 is enough.

The way I am looking at it is I think 4 players is the way to go (3 Chelsea and Benteke). This gives us the best opportunity I feel to get off to the best possible start to the season.

Many are looking towards gw3 and thinking that they would rather not spend the point hits transferring players out. My plan is to spend 4 points between gw1 and gw3, and I will still be able to put out a very strong team for gw3 (all it means is I cannot have 3 bench fodders as my 4th/5th defender and 5th mid). The way I see it is that by going with this strategy, it will give us a big advantage. By taking the 4pt hit after gw 1, it allows us to take out two of our 4 players with a blank, and jump on some bandwagons. The transfer market is usually busy after gw1 as we know, so the 4 points spent could potentially earn 0.4-0.6m in team value over that one week, while also allowing us to bring in players that had a great gw1 so might be carrying a bit of form.

    Make sense?

Makes sense and I wish those taking the risk the best of luck.

However, a couple of injuries and you will find yourself in trouble and forced into WCing.

People are going to be trigger happy after GW1 anyway, as starting lineups become known and bandwagons emerge. I don't see it as a bad thing to expect to take a -4pt hit and hence 3-4 DGWers is good by me

Yea you're right Milan, he's wrong, Marca's wrong, every other journalist that's reported it are wrong, they only have inside knowledge of what's going on, what could they possibly know? But Milanista who posts on fantasyfootballscout is right, he knows exactly what the truth is.

All I originally told you was to stop posting transfer speculation as fact. It is the equivalent of fake goals shouts and fake lineups. You ignored that and continued to spam the site despite multiple people telling you to stop. Then you bitch and whine.

The simple truth is you don't know anything and neither do I. The difference is that you don't know BS when you read it.

Yet you say it's "BS" as if you KNOW it's BS

Numberous DIFFERENT sources are reporting that Bale wants to leave and that Madrid have made an offer, therefore I'm inclined to believe them.

NO-ONE is reporting that Madrid don't want him and that Bale wants to stay, despite refusing to sign a new contract.

Because a player wants to leave, and a club makes an offer does not add up to the player leaving. He still belongs to the club.

Yesterday you constantly posted that Bale had been sold to Madrid as if it was a fact. If you don't see what the issue is with that then you are, to be frank, deeply stupid.

The way you posted it was if it was a fact, no point claiming otherwise. You did this over and over again.

I don't shoot down every piece of news, I merely pointed out that the news you were posting was unsubstantiated. This is exactly what I did about the tweet you posted above and you've gone on another wild rant against me.

I've always rated Gabby very highly. Electric pace and finished off the season well. 2mil less than btek seems good value considering im only putting one Villa player in for the DGW. Was caught between Noble and Brunt in the end...

Im not too sure id be overly happy with Hooper at 6.5m. I watched him for a bit and dont think he merits a 6.5 price tag. I may be proven wrong but I am paying the extra .5 for RVW

Wrote this on last page if it helps

      My thoughts on Hooper:

6.5m - decent price if he's nailed on, question marks on whether he's going to be playing with RVW or sharing time with him.

When watching SSN or final score, always seemed to be on the score-sheet on a ridiculous basis, the counter to this, SPL is easier league and scoring goals is a lot easier.

The counter to this then naturally is that he has better players around him now, should still be supplied the ball effectively and unlike his time at Celtic, not every team is going to park the proverbial bus when playing against norwich which should give him some more space.

In conclusion, and in my opinion, if he gets regular playing time then he's definitely in my team and a great option at 6.5 for third striker spot. Just my thoughts, cheers

        Thanks for your thoughts mate.

Firstly, I think RVW is the marque signing and he will get the most gametime (to start with at least)

When I look at the transition from Scotland to England there are few that surprise me. Kris Boyd would have been on SSN a lot more but he struggled even in the Championship. He might get more space but hes coming up against much better defenders. Teams in Scotland dont tend park the bus against the OF.

    Mig (Lewis)
    Coleman, Toure, Collins (R.Bennet, Clyne)
    Hazard, Nolan, Coutinho, Walcott (Thomas)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Benteke

Aguero is there as temporary, on form he'd be first name in the team but i think he'll have a good season. Otherwise ill upgrade to RVP and downgrade a mid.

Interesting how everyone jumps on the Chelsea DGW bandwagon but nobody notices that in GW3, Chelsea don't play, Spurs play Arsenal, ManU play Liverpool.

    And Man City have Hull.

    At home.

Difficulty is whom at Citeh? So many options, little hint as to which will play regularly. ON form, Dzeko looks the man, but that could be beyond brave to crazy.

Benteke will be going out soon after the DGW. Silva might well go out before it...

Great on paper Deano. Haven't seen much of him but saw brief Confed Cup and I worry (as a Spur). Does not appear very quick and seems to play as box poacher. That's a worry for a poss 4-3-3 fluid front three line-up. I would assume he's very decent with ball at his feet, poss clever passer etc, but looks far too much like a striker that needs and waits for service.

I wonder if Remy might have been a better punt. We'll see.

What are your thoughts on the Bale situation?
Has anyone taken him out of their team already thinking he will either certainly go or not have the right mindset if he stays?
Without Bale more options become available to strengthen your team elsewhere, so would it be a welcomed move or not in most cases?
    What's your favourite colour?

Prefer him to stay as I like watching him play, would be a loss to the league.
No point, not doing anything until the move is announced.
I wouldn't like if he moved, some people are saying it'll become "easier" to pick a team, I don't think so.

      I think he's leaving.

Simple truth it he's too good for Spurs, and Spurs could do with 75ish millions.

I don't see anyone really gaining by him staying for another season. Nobody is going to sign for Spurs just because Bale is there, because everyone knows he will leave. And if you look at the actual gameplay, Spurs becomes more and more centered around one man, which can't be good for them in the long run.

Also for PR reasons. Next to Bale the rest of the squad look like crap. Spurs are getting laughed at as a one-man-team.

      It just doesn't fit.

Per RMT, looking at GW1-19 (ie up to the Jan window), Mignolet/Boruc only scores 4.5 more points than Speroni/Boruc. I think that's persuaded me to give up on Mignolet, partic with Toure at 5m.

The keepers on RMT are very dodgy, something to do with assuming they'll play, just use your own judgement.

No, this isn't true- the keepers are not "dodgy". The numbers you see are their expected number of points, but sometimes RMT might suggest you bench a player with lower expected points.

For example: suppose you have De Gea as your goalkeeper and there is some uncertainty as to whether De Gea or Lindegard will play. De Gea's expected points might be lower than your other goalkeeper, but there's still a good chance you would want to play De Gea over your other keeper. This is what I tried to explain in the video!

Might be easier in numbers since a load of people don't seem to get this:

Utd keeper expected pts if they play - 4
De Gea chance of playing - 80%
Lindegaard chance of playing - 20%

Cardiff keeper expected pts if they play - 3.5
Marshall chance of playing - 95%
Lewis chance of playing - 5%

            --> De Gea RMT score = 3.2 (4x80%), Marshall RMT score = 3.33 (95%x3.5)

But, if DDG does play, he'll get 4, if he doesn't Marshall subs on -> Pick De Gea first choice

Expected points = 4 if DDG plays, 3.33 if he doesn't, ie better than just picking Marshall and only expecting to get 3.33.

              More detailed even:

              Picking Marshall -> Expected score = 3.33
Picking DDG -> Expected score = 4x80% + 3.33x20% = 3.87, so comfortably better than just picking Marshall even though his individual RMT score is higher.
