With plenty of clubs set to take part in friendlies over the next few days, Norwich were the only club on our radars last night. Gary Hooper bagged a brace as the Canaries snatched a draw against Braga, while elsewhere, Thomas Vermaelen is ruled out for the start of the season, Newcastle take a step closer to signing Bafetimbi Gomis and West Brom add to their defensive ranks with the capture of Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano.

Braga 2 Norwich 2
Chris Hughton rolled out a 4-4-1-1 formation for the Canaries’ trip to Portugal. Michael Turner returned to action for the first time this summer after a minor operation, while Ryan Bennett was named as part of a back-four which also saw new boy Martin Olsson feature at left-back. Robert Snodgrass started on the right as Nathan Redmond dropped to the bench for the first time in five matches, while Leroy Fer and Gary Hooper were also given the nod, with Wes Hoolahan tucking in behind the former Celtic man. Hooper seems to have wasted little time in carrying over his form at previous club Celtic – the new signing grabbed both the visitors’ goals before being subbed off as one of six second-half changes by Hughton. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel climbed off the bench at the break and partnered Hooper in a front two before the latter made way for Jacob Butterfield.

Prior to the game, Hughton revealed his delight after Turner had taken part in an open training session at Carrow Road the previous day. The Norwich boss also courted caution when discussing Seb Bassong, who has yet to feature this summer after he, too, underwent surgery:

“That’s probably the most pleasing one (Turner’s comeback). Michael has missed the majority of the pre-season, he’s been back in training now for over a week so it’s really pleasing to see him back…He’s (Bassong) had a very minor operation in the summer, which has set back his pre-season. We’re hoping he’s going to be training next week and for us of course it’s always that race to try and get him fit for that first game of the season. What is more important is that he makes sure he does his rehab in the right way because it’s very much about the whole season and not just one or two games.”

Hughton also made assurances over John Ruddy’s game time in the season ahead. The Norwich boss started Mark Bunn between the sticks last night but confirmed Ruddy will be his main stopper next time out:

““Yes, he (Ruddy) will be my number one. He is a quality goalkeeper. Last season was disappointing for him with injury but in Bunny we had someone who came in and did very well. That is another area you need competition, but John is a very good goalkeeper. The England is down to one person and all the players can do is perform well on a consistent basis to ask questions. I would expect any English player operating in the Premier League on a consistent basis to be knocking on the door.”

In Other News
Arsene Wenger rolled out a team news update ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates Cup match with Napoli later today. The Gunners boss revealed Santi Cazorla will feature for the first time this summer after an extended rest due to Confederations Cup duties with Spain, while Wojciech Szczesny is fully fit after a recent back problem prevented him from playing in each of the last couple of friendlies. The Gunners boss also spoke on the fitness of a couple of defenders, with only a fortnight now until the new season kicks off:

“Vermaelen is out for six more weeks [at least before returning to training] and Monreal will start [light] training on Monday. Vermaelen is developing normally but he has a stress fracture in his back which takes time.”

While Monreal’s potential return is likely to deter many from investing in Kieran Gibbs, with the duo vying for the left-back berth, Vermaelen’s absence is set to afford Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the chance to continue the central defensive partnership established towards the end of the previous campaign. Given that Arsenal face only one of last term’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks, the schedule affords them plenty opportunity to rack up the defensive returns and replicate the resilience that saw them concede just 37 times in 2012/13, the second most impressive backline in the Premier League.

Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano took to twitter last night to announce he has signed for West Brom. The 32-year-old rolls up to the Hawthorns on a two-year deal and follows fellow free transfer Nicolas Anelka to the club as Steve Clarke continues to be somewhat frugal with his summer spending. Given that Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson both missed just two games apiece over the course of the previous campaign, Lugano’s game time seems far from assured, despite his wealth of experience – we’ll have more on the new Hawthorns recruit in an upcoming Scout Report over the next day or two.

Reports indicate Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Bafetimbi Gomis after agreeing a fee with Lyon for the forward’s services. The French club’s president Jean Michel Aulas revealed:

“We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is eight million euros (£7million), plus two million bonus. The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents’ fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.”

Yet to make a single acquisition since the appointment of Joe Kinnear, the Magpies have so far been thwarted in their bid to bolster a faltering attack that scored just 45 times in 2012/13. They are believed to have pulled out of a bid for Darren Bent – leaving Fulham as favourites for the Villa man’s signature – but Alan Pardew is still keen on QPR’s Loic Remy, with a season-long loan deal mooted. With Papiss Cisse back in contention after resolving his dispute with the club, and Hatem Ben Arfa a viable option on the right of a front three, it remains to be seen just what system Pardew has in mind if he manages to snap up both Gomis and Remy before the transfer window closes on September 2.

So torn between Lukaku and Benteke I thought I'd just go for whoever had the lower ownership. Just checked the figures -

    Lukaku = 22.8%
    Benteke = 22.7%

    Helpful.

I thought I'd write a bit about Liverpool transfer target Diego Costa:

Standing at 6ft 2ins, Diego Costa is a powerful striker that offers a strong aerial and physical presence upfront, qualities which Sturridge and Suarez lack. He isn’t afraid to throw his weight around and go to war with defenders. Even though he has a tall and stocky physique, he is quite a mobile player who often likes to dribble with the ball and drive at defenders to draw fouls.

His goal scoring record of 20 goals in 44 appearances for Athletico Madrid may not scream prolific but you should consider that he was often played as a winger or just behind Radamel Falcao last season. He often aids the team in defensive duties and closes down nearby defenders. So he would provide Rodgers with more options due to his versatility and defensive work ethic. He isn’t a world class finisher but he is an intelligent forward who often finds himself in strong positions in the final third. While he may not directly fit with the high possession based pass and move style Rodgers is trying to implement, he could provide the key to penetrating stubborn defenses when the opportunity arises.

Costa is known for his fiery temperament and for winding up the opposing defenders. Insulting defenders, elbowing, spitting and head butting are methods of provocation he has used. He is almost a mini Suarez in terms of his temperament and competitive nature. However he is more subtle in his delivery and often gets away with no serious punishment from the referee. 15 yellow cards, 1 red card and a four match European ban backs up his fiery temperament, so Rodgers will have his work cut out to change his character and cut out the diving and play acting as well.

Overall Costa is a solid striker who should adapt to the style of the Premier League very quickly and at 24 years old, the best is yet to come. He will offer Liverpool a new dimension to their play and a significant physical presence up front. He may not be the most graceful or skilful Brazilian but he has the potential to be extremely effective, something Liverpool have been accused of lacking.

How much do we think Costa will.... wait no

How much will one have to spend to acquire the services of Costa? And with your valuation do you think he'll be worth a punt?

Is he definitely going to be in the market as a striker? I never know these days given that the area between a real nine and a false nine is becoming increasingly grayer (and so is determining whether a flase nine is false enough to be a midfielder or not)

That last question may seem daft but Rodgers will play strikers in (arguably) midfield positions given that he's signed a few

"Younes Kaboul is not involved in the match vs Monaco. His long term fitness is in serious question after spending more than a year out. Very unclear when we'll next see the centre-back in action."

Dawson is now most definitely the most nailed on defender for Tottenham right now, with Vert still recovering from the injury. The transfer of Caulker to Cardiff City is looking more and more ridiculous.

Chester out for Brayford maybe? (No one knows a great deal about either of their prem ability)

Also with Michu's tricky run of fixtures maybe put in someone else such as Navas/Silva/Coutinho and let them increase in price whilst hopefully Michu decreases then swap around? (Very speculative I know but isn't that what it's about?) This can be negated by the fact that lots of players do get pts vs big teams but it just seems a bit safer and potentially will get you ££ in the bank later on

And Given Lukaku and Dzeko being unreliable in terms of game time I'd only have one of the two personally. Give the other one a 'wide berth' (

Considering boruc (70mil attack) but dont see southampton doing much defensivly despite changes plus migs is good long haul.

    Example attack

    Hazard Walcott Couthino Miralles Thomas

    RVP Lampert Berbatov

All front line peno takers plus in top 5 last year.

Corrigan, that would be madness. All the informed Spurs fans will tell you he's our best LB but AVB doesn't seem to like him. Rose has been in the spot most pre-season and did reasonably well last season at SUN.

So Rose likely to start season with BAE back-up. Verty occasionally, but you don't play your best CB at LB long-term.

FuzzyWarbles - long time! Hope the recuperation is going well.

I'm a fan of Deuce, but I think his timing for being at Spurs wasn't the best. Bale keeping him out of the team, and at the same time he kept Siggy too far away from the XI imho.

With Deuce gone, both he and Siggy will get the play time they so definitely deserves.

Will remember him for his winner at Old Trafford

I've got both at the moment but it feels like a massive risk. I doubt I'll be feeling as bold when the deadline is closing in and I need to have players who I'm confident will start.

Nonetheless, good opportunity to wait and see what Pellegrini and Jose are saying before taking anyone out, but probably worth having other options in mind in case it starts to look increasingly unlikely that one or both will play.

Any nuggets of thoughts for this team?
      GW1:
      Szczesny
      Toure - Lescott - J.Collins
      Walcott - Hazard (c) - Michu - Silva
      Giroud - Lukaku - Aspas

      Subs: Boruc - J.Thomas - Clyne - S.Coleman

Starting 11 are all playing home games. My one dilemma is the Silva - Aspas combination vs. Coutinho - Dzeko. My current selection of the former saves me .5 million in the bank, but do people think they could outscore the other pair?

if Gomis joins NUFC what do you think will be his price? And will you rate him as a good prospect?

I think he should be the same as Cisse (8.5). I don't really rate him tbh.

7.5M was my first guess, but you might be right. For 8.5 I prefer Giroud 😉
