While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Parr may have a slight knock, didn't feature in their last preseason game.

Why is everyone getting coutinho, 9.0 for an unproven player is kinda rash for me. I brought him in January, he did well but just like michu, I think 9.0 is too risky. Or is there something I'm miSsing?

I think he'll have stats similar to Mata and his price will rise to 10+ by the end of the season. There have been other January signings in recent years who have failed to be as good in the following season, but Coutinho proved so good that without Suarez he is the architect of everything good attacking wise Liverpool are doing and i think the team will be built around him. Hope I'm not wrong.

Not weird, he scored the most points last season out of 4.0m keepers available and so the uneducated masses go for him. The exact same reason that Baker, Colback and Moore also have the highest % in their respective bargain buckets.

I'm not sure. It depends if I can fit him in. I want Dzeko, Sturridge, Soldado as my front 3 but I'd have to get rid of Walcott i think or downgrade to the cheapest defenders. If he's 9.0 then it's possible. 9.5 just about possible. 10 probably no chance.

Roberto soldado is not worth 9.5 million.

People are talking about his goals in Spain and thinking he'll score loads straight away. Other people are saying he'll take a while to settle.

I think neither of those things. He's going to be a disaster. 10 goals maximum in all competitions. Better options out there lads.

Well as a tottenham hotspur member, having access to SPURS TV i can assure you from the brief bits of training us members get to watch he looks very sharp in training and so does Paulinho.

Soldado, is worth 9.5 if Negredo is, fact. Both similar but with the squads, soldado will definitley be the main man so he gets the nod over Negredo for me.

It's up to you what you do with your team, but i can guarantee you'll end up putting in by week 3/4 he's and unbelievable striker in his peak.

The amount of chances Defoe and Ade messed up last season....if the same chances arrive, soldado will score...he's a natural predator.

It'd be an error not to include him, especially with tottenham's opening fixtures.

      I'll be honest....my opinion anyway....

      Keepers - not bad.

Defenders - Brayford and Parr are the best 4.0's you can get, so good job. Ivan is good for the DGW although he is a liabilty at times with his cards. Mert a standard pick. Vidic an error in my opinion, not nailed on anymore + injury prone and pricey...drop him to a 4.5 and spend the extra in the middle.

Midfielders - Kim going to be great and hes cheap. Snodgrass standard middle of the road player, should do well. Mirallas had a great pre-season so good pick. Carrick, may benefit from new bonus system but he doesn't get that many points although he starts alot, hes not great from a fantasy perspective. Ramires not nailed on, chelsea midfield could be anyone...hazard only guaranteed starter for gw1.

      Forwards - nice work.

My opinion....replace Vidic, Ramires and Carrick.

It's a difficult one if I drop vidic to a 4.5 change Ramires to hazard that leaves me with .5 to change carrick, I do think he is one of the MU players who are most likely to start mid most often... Who would you suggest a good replacement for carrick then?

get rid of soldado, he has just joined spurs and will need time to settle in and at 9.5 he is a gamble.

Agree with this I think just as like the likes of negredo / paulinho etc we need to see how they fit in, or you can go for the complete gamble of course and hope it pays off!

remember the tip: keep an eye on cheap def for BPS and get them in your team as soon as possible and build a strong MF and strike force. cheap def FTW with BPS, because defenders only will give you 6 points max with a clean sheet.

    Chelsea defender conundrum

Picking a CHE def for this GW without much data has been a headache for me (and probably many on here). Last year it was easier and I was lucky, picked Ivanovic.
    A. Cole doesnt appeal to me for any reason although he and Cech are probably most nailed on

So I am left with Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Luiz, Azpi as viable options. I have absolutely no idea who to pick although I am going with Terry for now (just a hunch) - my hunch is solely based on wanting to play Terry in 2 home games BUT there's also the case of GW3 v Man U, will JM want his experience in that game?

I'm trying to shy away from Ivan solely based on a hunch too...he may have used up all his GW1 Karma BUT after Terry he's probably the next defensive goal threat

I need one who will definitely play both games & I dont think we can guarantee that.

Having followed pre-season, and Mourinho's statements, Ivanovic just seems like the way to go. JM likes versatility, and Ivanovic gives that to him. Also he has spoken of how he sees him as a right-back who converts to centre-half when needed and not vice-versa. So on the back of all the pre-season time he has over Azpi, and his general experience within the side. Also as RB you're looking at a better frequency of assists/bonuses.

Ivanna just seems the better option. I don't see Terry cutting it like he used to. Don't get me wrong though. I love the guy and sincerely hope he proves me wrong.

Also I think Azpi is heading out for an international during the midweek before the season start.

Can anyone point me to the stats on distribution of total tranfers for each gameweek in previous seasons?

i.e. GW1 total transfers, Gw2 total transfers .... GW 26 total transfers etc

I'm interested in possible periods (August or maybe January) when it maybe ok to take hits on points if, like me, you place too much importance on team value.
