Steve Sidwell grabs Fulham’s only goal in a home draw with Spanish side Real Betis, as Adel Taarabt prepares to move to the Cottage on a season-long loan. Ravel Morrison bags a brace and Kevin Nolan is amongst the goals as West Ham hit back to see off Sporting Lisbon. Jose Mourinho hints at Chelsea rotation, Daniel Sturridge returns to full training for Liverpool, while Pablo Hernandez could be back in time for Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo this week:

Fulham 1 Real Betis 1
Martin Jol named three of his summer signings in the starting line-up for last night’s draw at Craven Cottage. Maarten Stekelenburg, Fernando Amorebieta and Derek Boateng got the nod in a side that contained Kieran Richardson at left-back and Bryan Ruiz and Ashkan Dejagah on the flanks, with Jol selecting Dimitar Berbatov as the more withdrawn forward behind Hugo Rodallega as a result of Ruiz’s move to the left wing. Ruiz supplied the assist for Steve Sidwell’s opener thanks to his corner-kick duties, though he was withdrawn later in the match as the Fulham boss made five alterations as the second period progressed – Rodallega had an effort disallowed but the hosts were unable to add to their goal haul and settled for a stalemate.

The main talking point occurred after the match as Jol confirmed Adel Taarabt was undergoing a medical with a view to a season-long loan deal.

“I was too late to sign him when he went to QPR and he did ever so well there. He was over a £10m player 12 months ago and hopefully he will show his potential here.”

Depending on further acquisitions, the Moroccan’s arrival may have a knock-on effect on the likes of Damien Duff – if a new forward arrives and Ruiz is shifted to the right, Taarabt looks likely to slot in on the opposite flank, given that Jol is clearly a fan. Certainly, the Fulham boss is hopeful on adding to his squad before the season gets underway:

“All I can say is we have several doors open. But the new Chairman is not here to burn his money; we have to find a healthy way to do our business and we will find the right players. I’m excited about the youngsters and if we can get some players to this Club then the future will be bright. I want to do better than last season.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 West Ham 3
Sam Allardyce shuffled his pack for the first of two games in the space of 24-hours last night. The Hammers boss handed Joey O’Brien and Matt Taylor the full-back roles, with Joe Cole and Matt Jarvis flanking Modibo Maiga up top and Ravel Morrison in midfield. Razvan Rat replaced Taylor on the left at half-time and his endeavours down the flank proved instrumental – a cross was flicked on by Maiga for Kevin Nolan to notch the visitors’ first before Rat teed up Morrison to fire the Hammers ahead. Rat also played a part in the third – his shot deflected to Cole, who supplied the assist for Morrison’s second of the match as Allardyce’s side won for the seventh time in eight pre-season encounters.

Former United man Morrison seems to have finally settled down and justified the hype heaped upon him earlier in his career – he has now notched five times over the summer, the Hammers top scorer, with Nolan next best with three goals to his name. After the match, assistant manager Neil McDonald spoke highly of Morrison’s upturn is performance:

“He has certainly grown up a touch. With all due respect, when he first came from Manchester United he thought he was the top kid and he was going to walk straight into our team and it certainly doesn’t work like that. We sent him away to get the experience at Birmingham and he’s certainly come back and he’s used that experience. He had some experience around him as well [in midfield] with Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble pulling and pushing him, as you’d expect. If we can get him on the ball in the final third then he can produce and he’s produced two goals on Monday. He missed his penalty at the end but that’s good experience for him. He’s come back in good shape, just like the rest of them.”

In Other News
Jose Mourinho has served notice of his intentions for the season ahead by hinting at the possibility of rotation amongst the Chelsea attacking midfielders. The Blues boss praised the recent displays of Victor Moses over the summer and with several high profile players vying for the three positions behind the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1, he admitted he was keen to ration out game time across the busy schedule, with the number of options on the left hand side particularly generous:

“Where can I can fit all the players in? I hope to play 60 matches. So we will use a rotation of players that’s for sure. Victor has been terrific, working very hard. In his position, we have Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle, and with Victor, we can change during a match and give new life to the team.”

Bearing in mind that Mourinho feels that Hazard, De Bruyne and Schurrle – along with Oscar – can play through the middle, Juan Mata certainly looks to have less competition for places on the right. The Spaniard has mainly featured in “the hole” over his two seasons at Stamford Bridge but with his manager admitting he prefers a left-footer on the right, his consistency of starts looks likely to remain strong.

Daniel Sturridge has given Fantasy managers plenty to mull over after returning to full training yesterday. Yet to feature in pre-season due to an ankle problem, there was some uncertainty over whether he would make the start of the season but, speaking to the club’s official website yesterday, Brendan Rodgers seemed pretty confident the January signing will be ready to face Stoke on Saturday August 17:

“Daniel had his first training session today with the team and I thought he looked very, very sharp. He’s worked very hard along with the medical guys who have done a great job with him. It’s a great testament to him he’s kept himself fit and it was just waiting for the right time to introduce him. It’s important he has another good week’s training and it was great to see him back today, because for me he can be one of the top strikers in the Premier League this season. He’s played no part in the pre-season so you put him in at the top end of the field with his pace, power and his quality and we are able to add something more to the group as well. So it all bodes well for us for the beginning of the season and sets us up nice and solid and exciting for the first game.”

With Luis Suarez suspended for the first six matches of the campaign, the stage is set for Sturridge to shine from the off. Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas have both caught the eye with three goals apiece during the summer and with Rodgers’ side winning all five of their matches so far, they are approaching the Potters clash in fine form. The Reds face just one of last term’s top six in the opening nine fixtures and with 10 goals and five FPL assists in just 14 appearances last term, Sturridge is the joint-fifth most popular forward in the FPL game, with almost 16% ownership thus far.

Pablo Hernandez is hopeful of a return to action in time for Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo on Thursday. The Spaniard missed the first leg against the Swedish side after picking up a groin problem in training but with the Swans racking up a 4-0 win, it’s uncertain whether Michael Laudrup will risk him. Hernandez has been one of the Welsh side’s star performers over the summer and scored four times in the first seven friendlies but with the season opener against United less than a fortnight away, he accepts Michael Laudrup may decide to keep him fresh for the showdown against the champions:

“While training, I felt a pain in my groin, but in less than a week I should be able to play again. It’s possible I could play in Malmo. The leg feels good, but I will have to train with the team before the game. It feels good now, but I have to be patient. I want to play, I think for me it is better to play in this game. My fitness is good, but it is more important to make sure I am 100 per cent over the injury. It will be good to play against Malmo, but I can wait for the next game against Manchester United. I was feeling good before the injury, I was concentrating on my work in the games. I know it’s a very important position for me and the team. It is always bad when you get an injury, but it’s not a serious injury and whether it’s against Malmo or Manchester United, I have to make sure that I’m fit.”

Are you suggesting Sagna is a good centre back? because i'm telling you right now that he isn't. He is clumsy and is awful at decision making. We need to buy a new defender as this should not be an option.

I am not saying he's the world best center back. But I still think he's one of the best right backs in the league. He also knows the game very well and had a decent game against galataseray. He's better than miquel that's for sure.
If you read the post I am pretty much saying he isn't the worst option as a 5th cb in case of 3 of the 4 ahead of him being out at the same time.

This is close to The team if i decide to go without RvP:

    Mignolet-Boruc
    Cole- Coleman- Turner- Collins- Parr
Hazard- Walcott- Coutinho - Michu - Kim
    Sturridge - Giroud- Weimann

Ok to double up on Arsenal and Liverpool in front 8?

Although RVP is the most consistent points scorer in the game, the money you save elsewhere by not having him is too good to ignore, even if Bale goes.

Even assuming he scores 3 in the first 3 games, and you need a hit to get him in for Palace at home GW4, your stronger defence and or midfield will more than compensate. No matter which way I look at it, I arrive at the same answer.

    No RVP for me.

The thing is at that price you probably want double figures every other gw, if not 2 out of 3. Not sure he will achieve that in his first 6 gw.

Doing a bit of number crunching actually tells me RVP is worth having. The reason for this being that his consistency makes him the perfect captain week in week out and this is where you make the points up. With Bale gone, he's the only person I'd happily have as captain every week.

Plus I don't want to plan hits or to wildcard in GW4 - I want to be forced into it.

The best player in the league as not only a differential but a captained differential is ridiculously appealing.

I am not sure about a differential? Doesn't he have high ownership? Even if you captain him in the first 3 gameweeks, and he delivers 18 pts each time (9 doubled), I still think you will more than make up the points by spending the extra money elsewhere.

He does but that's because he top scored last season. The 'better' players, i.e. the ones on here aren't as keen.

I'm looking more long term for a number of reasons. Firstly, I don't want to be forced into wildcarding. That CP game in GW4 will tempt all of those over the Euro break to wildcard. Secondly, the fact that everybody will wildcard him in shows that he's a viable option.

I'm not sure the money can be better spent elsewhere. I have Hazard and Walcott currently, so the money would probably go on Silva and Sturridge. Points-wise, RVP and a cheapie would get about as many points as these two over the season imo, although slightly less. Even if it's 50 points less, the captaincy will make this up.

      I've got RVP.

With Moyes a typically defensive manager, I can't see anyone but RVP coming to the rescue early on if scores are level.

The man is a goal scoring machine.

And preseason hasn't been any real indicator for United. Unless you really want to take a punt on Lingard.

I've got RVP and for good reason.

I was just thinking the same. If you spread the love a bit with the RVP money you can list a nice squad.

I had RvP in, whoever now I've removed him again lol. Soldado, Giroud, Lukaku (then maybe Bony later) and you can still field a decent midfield / defence.

I'm looking at going with something like this:

      Migs 4m
      Coleman Cole Collins 4m 4m
      Hazard Walcott Mirallas Coutinho 4.5m

If he wasn't so consistent & such a reliable captain's choice I'd leave him out, even in the big games you can count on him, for example he scored in all but two of the games against chelsea/spurs/liverpool/man city & arsenal last season (man city at home & chelsea at home) - 8 goals from 10 games. You just can't ignore his consistency

in any case one of hazard/oscar will havet to go in gw2/3 making space for the michus silvas etc, right?

Haz is a keeper, probably. Bench him GW 3 blank. Not sure about Oscar, could keep him instead, or sell post GW 2, depends on who looks in hottest form. I fancy both of these to outscore Romelu, obviously.

was just debated about 30 minutes ago

      summary:

      Hazard nailed on

fans on Chelsea site in love with Kevin De Bruyne (consensus that he looks sharps in pre-season)

Andre Schurrle seems more likely to get time than KDB, unless he doesn't (also more likely to shoot as per his reputation for shooting first and noticing teammates later)

Mata, in case you haven't heard, will miss a game of the DGW due to Spain friendly

Lamps hasn't played in pre-season due to injury

Ramires was not discussed... more interest in the new boys

          If I was psychic....

Personally debating between the value of one good game out of Mata versus the possibility of 2 with Oscar or Schurrle.

Mata playing for sure against Aston Villa is tempting against player X maybe playing against Hull and Aston Villa or maybe getting 40 minutes of sub time combined against both.

Kind of backward logic on the DGW... but only DGW definite two-gamers that are "worth it" are Hazard, Ivanovic, Cole & Bentenke.

Heels, yeah, it's a right ol' pickle. Does Special ONe keep same team for Villa if they bash up Hull, or rest with MU in mind? Does Mata get shoved out wide for a 40 min Villa cameo?

Minefield. I basically agree, although I se Oscar being virtually nailed, think Jose likes him a whole lot. But I'm not so sure about Ivano, CHE def is causing me problems. Probably climb off Luiz bandwagon, may jump Ivano/Terry, but could see myself going Cashley for reassurance of CS.

      Nope.

Just pointing out Baines is easy enough to fit in.

I stand by my point - I prefer Baines over Mirallas and I can see Baines having another 170pts season.

Last season me and JOA predicted it and we were correct.

      35 games = 70
      CS(8) = 32
      Goals(5)= 30
      Assist(5) =15
      Boners = 20

      TOTAL = 167

            Turner/Ivan/Collins
            Snoddy/Nolan/Haz/Walc
            Rvp/JRod/Lukaku + 2.5 m

            4m/Shaw/JT/Chester

Ivan becomes Baines(7.5) in gw 2 and Lukaku bcomes Soldado(9.5)

Feel like i'll start the season with this team - very much like the look of it

    Mignolet (Davis)
    Collins - coleman - ivan (chester/parr)
Walcott - hazard - mirallas - coutinho (ravel)
    Benteke - lukaku - giroud

1.0M in the bank to upgrade ivan to bains for gw2
Aware ravel may not start the season but could do with the extra 0.5 over buying koren/kim
Looking to also go benteke/lukaku to soldado/sturridge once the seasons started and would be happy to go walcott to nolan for the funds
    any other advice?

General consensus is if you have a top 6 keeper who you can play every week you don't need cover. If you've got a cheap 4.5 1st choice keeper you will need cover / someone to rotate them with. A third option is to get a 4.5 keeper and a 4.0 keeper from the same team to ensure you at least have one keeper who plays.

Is anyone considering a totally weak defence (bearing in mind clean sheets are usually a premium)

    If so you could have:

    Mignolet // Boruc

    Parr // Chester // Brayford // Collins // Shaw

    Hazard // Coutinho // Chadli // Mirallas // Kim

    RVP // Lukaku // Giroud

Not saying this is the right way to go, but what a great attacking line.

I can't see why would you would do that. For 2.0m you could upgrade Shaw and Parr to Touré and Mertesacker and those 2.0 could easily be found by downgrading Migs to Marshall (rotates well with Boruc) and Coutinho to Kagawa or Mirallas to Snoddgrass. That will give you a much better team imo

He can fill in at left back and center back if needed, would start as a dm for us anyway and bayern are looking to sell, so no inflated price. We are a more attractive preposition than Wolfsburg.
