Steve Sidwell grabs Fulham’s only goal in a home draw with Spanish side Real Betis, as Adel Taarabt prepares to move to the Cottage on a season-long loan. Ravel Morrison bags a brace and Kevin Nolan is amongst the goals as West Ham hit back to see off Sporting Lisbon. Jose Mourinho hints at Chelsea rotation, Daniel Sturridge returns to full training for Liverpool, while Pablo Hernandez could be back in time for Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo this week:

Fulham 1 Real Betis 1
Martin Jol named three of his summer signings in the starting line-up for last night’s draw at Craven Cottage. Maarten Stekelenburg, Fernando Amorebieta and Derek Boateng got the nod in a side that contained Kieran Richardson at left-back and Bryan Ruiz and Ashkan Dejagah on the flanks, with Jol selecting Dimitar Berbatov as the more withdrawn forward behind Hugo Rodallega as a result of Ruiz’s move to the left wing. Ruiz supplied the assist for Steve Sidwell’s opener thanks to his corner-kick duties, though he was withdrawn later in the match as the Fulham boss made five alterations as the second period progressed – Rodallega had an effort disallowed but the hosts were unable to add to their goal haul and settled for a stalemate.

The main talking point occurred after the match as Jol confirmed Adel Taarabt was undergoing a medical with a view to a season-long loan deal.

“I was too late to sign him when he went to QPR and he did ever so well there. He was over a £10m player 12 months ago and hopefully he will show his potential here.”

Depending on further acquisitions, the Moroccan’s arrival may have a knock-on effect on the likes of Damien Duff – if a new forward arrives and Ruiz is shifted to the right, Taarabt looks likely to slot in on the opposite flank, given that Jol is clearly a fan. Certainly, the Fulham boss is hopeful on adding to his squad before the season gets underway:

“All I can say is we have several doors open. But the new Chairman is not here to burn his money; we have to find a healthy way to do our business and we will find the right players. I’m excited about the youngsters and if we can get some players to this Club then the future will be bright. I want to do better than last season.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 West Ham 3
Sam Allardyce shuffled his pack for the first of two games in the space of 24-hours last night. The Hammers boss handed Joey O’Brien and Matt Taylor the full-back roles, with Joe Cole and Matt Jarvis flanking Modibo Maiga up top and Ravel Morrison in midfield. Razvan Rat replaced Taylor on the left at half-time and his endeavours down the flank proved instrumental – a cross was flicked on by Maiga for Kevin Nolan to notch the visitors’ first before Rat teed up Morrison to fire the Hammers ahead. Rat also played a part in the third – his shot deflected to Cole, who supplied the assist for Morrison’s second of the match as Allardyce’s side won for the seventh time in eight pre-season encounters.

Former United man Morrison seems to have finally settled down and justified the hype heaped upon him earlier in his career – he has now notched five times over the summer, the Hammers top scorer, with Nolan next best with three goals to his name. After the match, assistant manager Neil McDonald spoke highly of Morrison’s upturn is performance:

“He has certainly grown up a touch. With all due respect, when he first came from Manchester United he thought he was the top kid and he was going to walk straight into our team and it certainly doesn’t work like that. We sent him away to get the experience at Birmingham and he’s certainly come back and he’s used that experience. He had some experience around him as well [in midfield] with Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble pulling and pushing him, as you’d expect. If we can get him on the ball in the final third then he can produce and he’s produced two goals on Monday. He missed his penalty at the end but that’s good experience for him. He’s come back in good shape, just like the rest of them.”

In Other News
Jose Mourinho has served notice of his intentions for the season ahead by hinting at the possibility of rotation amongst the Chelsea attacking midfielders. The Blues boss praised the recent displays of Victor Moses over the summer and with several high profile players vying for the three positions behind the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1, he admitted he was keen to ration out game time across the busy schedule, with the number of options on the left hand side particularly generous:

“Where can I can fit all the players in? I hope to play 60 matches. So we will use a rotation of players that’s for sure. Victor has been terrific, working very hard. In his position, we have Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle, and with Victor, we can change during a match and give new life to the team.”

Bearing in mind that Mourinho feels that Hazard, De Bruyne and Schurrle – along with Oscar – can play through the middle, Juan Mata certainly looks to have less competition for places on the right. The Spaniard has mainly featured in “the hole” over his two seasons at Stamford Bridge but with his manager admitting he prefers a left-footer on the right, his consistency of starts looks likely to remain strong.

Daniel Sturridge has given Fantasy managers plenty to mull over after returning to full training yesterday. Yet to feature in pre-season due to an ankle problem, there was some uncertainty over whether he would make the start of the season but, speaking to the club’s official website yesterday, Brendan Rodgers seemed pretty confident the January signing will be ready to face Stoke on Saturday August 17:

“Daniel had his first training session today with the team and I thought he looked very, very sharp. He’s worked very hard along with the medical guys who have done a great job with him. It’s a great testament to him he’s kept himself fit and it was just waiting for the right time to introduce him. It’s important he has another good week’s training and it was great to see him back today, because for me he can be one of the top strikers in the Premier League this season. He’s played no part in the pre-season so you put him in at the top end of the field with his pace, power and his quality and we are able to add something more to the group as well. So it all bodes well for us for the beginning of the season and sets us up nice and solid and exciting for the first game.”

With Luis Suarez suspended for the first six matches of the campaign, the stage is set for Sturridge to shine from the off. Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas have both caught the eye with three goals apiece during the summer and with Rodgers’ side winning all five of their matches so far, they are approaching the Potters clash in fine form. The Reds face just one of last term’s top six in the opening nine fixtures and with 10 goals and five FPL assists in just 14 appearances last term, Sturridge is the joint-fifth most popular forward in the FPL game, with almost 16% ownership thus far.

Pablo Hernandez is hopeful of a return to action in time for Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo on Thursday. The Spaniard missed the first leg against the Swedish side after picking up a groin problem in training but with the Swans racking up a 4-0 win, it’s uncertain whether Michael Laudrup will risk him. Hernandez has been one of the Welsh side’s star performers over the summer and scored four times in the first seven friendlies but with the season opener against United less than a fortnight away, he accepts Michael Laudrup may decide to keep him fresh for the showdown against the champions:

“While training, I felt a pain in my groin, but in less than a week I should be able to play again. It’s possible I could play in Malmo. The leg feels good, but I will have to train with the team before the game. It feels good now, but I have to be patient. I want to play, I think for me it is better to play in this game. My fitness is good, but it is more important to make sure I am 100 per cent over the injury. It will be good to play against Malmo, but I can wait for the next game against Manchester United. I was feeling good before the injury, I was concentrating on my work in the games. I know it’s a very important position for me and the team. It is always bad when you get an injury, but it’s not a serious injury and whether it’s against Malmo or Manchester United, I have to make sure that I’m fit.”

It's the four defenders that Hull will play each week, usually consisting of a pair of centre-backs plus a left-back and a right-back.

The problem I have is I've got 3 Chelsea players, Benteke and Dzeko...

I can ship out Cole and Lukaku for GW3 and leave Benteke and Hazard on the bench for a week. But it's a hell of a risk to have someone who isn't nailed on and rely on them for that game.

Problem with Noble was you relied solely on set pieces for points almost. So that was bound to go wrong, which it did for me, since he didn't perform when you played him but did when you didn't play him.

You always know what you get with Nolan.

The same difference is not evident with JRod and Lambert, although Lambert will probably score better with the set pieces.JRod might still be better value though.

    Only looking at first four:

Rotate Jarvis and Koren (or other pair summing up to 10.5) for CAR,NOR,STO,CAR.

    or

Play Ramirez or other 6.0 midfielder (benching Thomas) for wba,SUN,nor, WHM.

Or just in general, what do people prefer? Rotating or no rotating?

The problem with rotating is that you end up playing a (most likely) poor player every week.

I would play Jarvis and downgrade Koren to someone like Thomas and bench. That extra 0.5 might be put to use somewhere else?

Yes, but it's either playing one less than average good player in a good fixture each week.
Or play a slightly better player against all kinds of opposition each week. While you also have a player in your team who's only benched each week (which I genereally don't like to do with a midfielder).

If I could get the 6.0 player to a even better player, it might be justifiable to have the 4.5 midfielder. But with the price distribution I have now, I'm looking at distributing 19.5 over my two last midfield spots.

    Vorm
    Coleman - Riether - O'Shea
    Hazard - Mirallas - Walcott - Kagawa - Silva
    Soldado - Lukaku

Bench: Boruc - Anelka - Brayford - Parr

If Soldado is 9.5 I'll still have 1.0 in the bank to upgrade Vorm or a defender. Was planing on to Lukaku to Bony after the DGW or use my 1.0 to get Sturridge instead. Thoughts?

If nailed on at £5.5m for: NEW, car, HUL, sto then I'd say so but as Mithrandir pointed out, there is the spectre of Richards at centre back with Kompany.

Not to mention Garcia who's been getting pre-season gametime there. Lescott is favourite but it would be an unpleasant moment when Demi broke the teamsheets and your 5.5m Man City defender is on the bench.

I don't understand why noone thinks Dzeko can nail down a starter role. How come people think Negredo is better? Negredo is an average striker that has some goals in him nothing special. He's no better than Darren Bent or Defoe. A 15 goal per season striker at best with an occasional 20 goal season. He has no experience in European competitions and unproven against tough opposition.
Dzeko is a world class player and has been for a long time. He was the best striker in Bundesliga for many seasons with Wolfsburg. He is proven againt tough opposition. His only problem in City was Mancini. If Pellegrini's tactics need a no9, a classic striker, a target man and Dzeko is in form as he has been in preseason he will use him. If Dzeko continues in form he will challenge RVP for the top scorer of EPL.

    Mingolet (Boruc)

Terry / Kocselny / Coleman (Clyne / Parr)

Mirrilas / Hazard / Coutinho / Walcott (Morrison)

Lambert / Dzeko / Soldado (to hopefully get him at £9.5m)

I plan to downgrade Terry after the DGW and put that money upfront. All money I make will be going on that forward line ASAP?

    Is Benteke in Your team????

I have warned two posters yesterday about this and to my surprise, today (in these 6 pages) I have seen another 5 teams when people have Benteke AND both Arsenal and Chelsea defenders in their team!

They even got praises for having a strong and balanced team from people who should know better.

If Benteke scores, your Chelsea and/or Arsenal defender is a waste without a clean sheet. If Benteke doesn't score, he is a waste for a valuable attacking spot.

In other words.....You can't have both these options in your team.

    Rant over.

Maybe people are thinking longer term than the first week...

Plus players like Luiz have goalscoring threat. But I agree, I wouldn't have Benteke AND an Arsenal defender, but a Chelsea one is fine in my opinion, particularly a player like Terry or Luiz with a lot of goalscoring threat.

This is faulty reasoning in my opinion. If you were realistically demanding maximum points from every player then you'd be right. But when does that happen? Almost never, so ruling out players on the basis that their score contradicts another score is daft. Betting on multiple outcomes is perfectly sane.

Anyone entertained the thought of having just 2 Chelsea players for the double?

    Benefits:

    - Probably less/no hits needed the following 2 weeks
-Less chance of being screwed over by rotation

    Drawbacks:

    - Less players in your team potentially playing 2 games
    - Mourinho might not even rotate at all, and the 3rd player you don't pick goes onto do well in both games
    - A general one.. you would lose the advantage on paper over people who don't load up, and be behind from the start.

Seems very risky i think, because there are plenty of players who could outscore the Villa DGWers and i dont think Rooney, if signed, will do so in time to feature in the double. Plus he's injured. This is rooney so his fitness must be so bad right now, having had no pre season. It has the advantage of you probably having an above average GW 1, and allowing you to see better options from GW 2 onwards, but i don't think it's enough time for any patterns to emerge, or general consensus to be formed about the players worth getting from GW 2. Plus there's the blank to negotiate. Assuming you don't have Chelsea players after GW 1, you'd want them again after GW 3. There's also the international breaks which are better times to wildcard for money reasons, and injuries i think. Wow.. sorry for waffling on. Anyway, hope this changes your thinking if you read it.

I am entertaining it, but at the moment I think I'd want Lukaku/Benteke just because I cant' see too many good striking options. With Sturridge and Soldado coming in though, hmmm... might go with defender + Hazard.

I actually have Benteke with 2 Chelsea right now. Would be some comfort to everyone loading up, as he's guaranteed 180 imo.

I always go for a minimum of 4. Did six last season for Pool-Swans last season to great effect with no hits necessary. You could do the same here but I'm doing 4.

People on this site will have you think it a season-ending disaster if you take a hit in your first 3 weeks.

      Risk vs Reward.

    Winning Team Here!!!!!

If anyone has any doubts, criticism, suggestions or improvements they would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Mertesaker, Coleman, Collins, (Brayford, Chester)
Hazard (C), Coutiniho, Mirallas, Kim (Wanyama)
    Van Persie, Giroud, Lukaku*

I will replace Lukaku with Soldado after GW1

Personally, I am not sure about Coutinho and would like a Chelsea defender for the DGW, so I would downgrade Coutinho to Kagawa and get Cole.

With Nastasic out, who will join Kompany at CB?

    Richards or Lescott?

Richards will get injured in training, or the warm up.

      Dont make this mistake.
      4-6 weeks. Call that 4.
Now remember game 1 is 2 weeks away. So 2 game weeks.
Nasty will be back for Hull.
And he is young. Injuries repair quicker when your young.

I got Lescott in straight away, it would be quite a slap in the face for him if they put Richards in.

A little advise would be appreciated..
    Mignolet Davis
    Mert Terry Toure Clyne Turner
    Kagawa Hazard Oscar Mirallas Thomas
    Giroud Soldado(9.5m) Dzeko

2m in my bank to tinker with after gw1 and gw2 as I know front line are not all guaranteed playing time

I have to have Hooper. His price, his years of high goal tallies, everything.
