West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

Assuming price wasn't an issue, Baines is the obvious choice.

I have a feeling that Everton will be conceding more this year, though. Not too keen to get either this time around.

You clearly don't know that much either. 😉

They tend to play with a back 3 which is likely to consist of Figueroa, Chester and Faye. Elmo and Brady operating as wing-backs with Koren either in the hole behind a front 2 or playing deep in a 3-4-2-1.

Because Liverpool won't start the season with only 2 recognized CB's and every player I had heard linked is established would be very strong competition for Toure. BR doesn't like Skrtel at all due to his style of play and so wants a long term replacement.

Well I think this band of no-hopers are long overdue a good slating:

    .........................Mignolet ★ Boruc
    ....Johnson ★ Agger ★ Rat ★ Collins ★ Yoshida
    ...Hazard ★ Oscar ★ Mirallas ★ Dorrans ★ Quinn
    .................Soldado ★ Lukaku ★ Dobbie

    (7.0m in the bank).

The plan is to do either Oscar -> Walcott or Lukaku -> R.V.P. in GW2; and to do the transfer I didn't do in GW3 (though depending on how things go, I may take a hit to do both in GW2).

My main worry is Dobbie. Will he start? I don't care if he plays reverse OOP in midfield so long as I can call on him when I need him. He rotates well with Quinn and the two will rotate with Dorrans as well. I will sometimes play four at the back to make up for the weak mids, and the defence works as a three-way rotation itself.

This is all a bit complicated and I grant you it doesn't look pretty - but if everyone's a starter I can see them working together quite well.

Sorry for the length of this RMT. But if you made it through, I'd be glad of any help / critique.

    Thanks!

Does gayle work instead of dobbie (don't know his price). They spent big money on him and I can see him doing pretty well if he palace start well.

I'd probably downgrade one of the pool def to a city def (lescott looks safe for at least the first few gws and possibly longer. Pelegrini might reinstate the title winning partnership long term imo) as this would allow you to squeeze sturridge in if utd bomb gw1

Quite possibly! Though he's 5.0m 🙁 I am scraping the barrel a bit, wish I could get hold of that extra 0.5m.

City defenders are like Chelsea defenders...too risky in my book (except the pricier Kompany).

I am really interested in discussing whether Coleman is really nailed on?

I've seen Hibbert, Heitinga and Stones play a role in pre-season, and I'm not sure if Martinez is going to stick with 343? If reports are to be believed, Toby Alderweireld is on his way, meaning a back three of him or Heitinga, Alcaraz/Distin and Jagielka, which would free up Coleman (or possibly Hibbert) on the right and Baines on the left. However, if he reverts back to four at the back, I'm not sure that Coleman is as assured. TA/Hetinga could always shift to RB or Hibbert could always slot in as he is more defensively inclined than Coleman.

I know that I have sufficiently confused myself with the possibilities to steer clear of Coleman. What are your thoughts? With Verts injured and Caulker gone, surely Dawson is a better bet for 5 mil? I also think he will be a good bet for bps given the new scoring system?

He went to a team that was clearly going to play him out of his favoured position and that had way too much risk of rotation which does not suit his style of play or what he was used to.

I am not saying anything negative about him or Spurs just that we all knew he could have gone to a club and make a real impact but for many reasons ended up at the wrong place for his legacy.

My first RMT. Be easy on me!

    Mannone - Boruc

    Shaw - Brayford - Coleman - Turner - Collins
    Hazard - KDB - Snodgrass - Silva - Sissoko
    Lukaku - Giroud - RVP

Sissoko is there for now because i need a player who i will bench the first gwk and will play the next two or more. He has decent fixtures for gwk's 2 and 3 but i can easily swap him for someone if anyone has any idea of someone for gwk's 2 and 3 priced at 6.0 or under?
Also, im not sure about my keepers but i dont know anything regarding rotations and whatnot.
    Overall, what do you think?

I really like it for an RVP team. My problem with KDB is not the rotation risk, is the rotation fact. Mou will rotate midfielders, possible 1 pointers in the horizon

Thank you, i think its reasonably strong for an RVP team. I toyed with hacing Dzeko for a while but i thought id go Silva because im assuming he is more nailed on? I see what you mean regarding KDB. It's just that quite a lot has been said about Spain having a game a few days before and that pretty much rules Mata out for me, and the majority of people on this site from the RMT's i've seen. Do you not think KDB would play atleast one game in the first gwk? He isnt a long term pick, its just a one week punt. I will get Mirallas in for KDB gwk 2 and possibly Soldado for Lukaku.

yeah he could grab a start. But don´t forget that even without mata the 3 attacking midfielders spots are pretty tight. Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle, Moses (who´s having a good preseason), even lampard if he´s played in the hole. Nothing certain except for hazard. I´m going with Oscar myself.

Ahh yes, thats very true. Although i am ruling Lampard out for playing in the hole. I think i read something regarding Moses where Mourinho said something about throwing him on to inject life on the pitch so i assume he will be a sub mostly. He could start one game but i fancy De Bruyne for one atleast. Oscar is a good shout but he seems a little overpriced in my eyes. Also, i think i read that KDB got around 10 goals and 10 assists last season so he may very well be worth a punt imo. Thank you for the feedback though!

Dorrans (5.0m) at WBA has been flagged up tonight as an interesting option (by WildRover). Apparently he's on pens and has been scoring goals. Last season he was hampered by injury and was played further back, but this could be his year.

Hmm, he's an intersting option alright. I couldnt possibly try predicting WBA's starting 11 though, i do know he had quite a decent year the year they got promoted, but he hasnt lived up to expectation in the PL. I will keep an eye on him though, thank you.

When Aguero is back to full fitness, do you guys think its possible to see a starting eleven without dzeko and negredo (i mean not always but is it likely). fernan, yaya, jovetic, silva, navas, aguero. Or that attacking force doesn´t look like an option?

I would not use the word possible but the word PROBABLE instead. Pele is going to play 1 lone striker and Aguero is the best that they have. Jovetic can actually tackle as well as pass and score and so will balance nicely with Navas or Nasri and Silva should fill the hole nicely.

I can also see Milner and Barry getting some game time with Yaya pushed up against the bigger teams and all of this spells disaster for Dzeko and imo especially Negredo's game time as Dzeko has proven time and time again that give him 20 mins and he will make one chance count. I have seen a lot of Negredo and every time I watch him he doesn't score until at least his 4-5th chance which is not the way to steal starts from the bench.

Courtnho might not be able to continue at rate he did, it was a very small sample.

On the other hand Sturridge might have to share points with Aspas and Court plus he very injury prone

So get a Chelsea defender in there and give someone cheaper the forward slot. Luiz/Terry/Ivanovic/Cole could be on for two cleanies alone, ignoring their attacking threat. Which one will start both games is the question?

But this is not last year....... they are a worse defensive unit this year....... IMO ..... No commanding keeper, weak RB and suspect CB's ....... I'd be surprisrd if they get more clean sheets than any other team in the top 7 this year ......... but thats me looking forward

They had the same uncommanding GK, weak RB and CBs last season, so why would thy suddenly be so much worse this season? The way they play is the main reason they keep CSs not the individual players as such.

A truly baffling statement as its exactly the same defense and keeper that kept the 3rd most in the league last season and the 7 of those 14 came in the last 13 GW's showing if anything improved form as the season progressed.

    Evening all.

My first RMT this season, with a few thoughts.

I've not had my laptop for a few days, so this is subject to change in terms of rotations once I get to see them again. But the approach would still be the same.

    Boruc - Mannone
Murner - Collins - Clyne - Amorb - Brown (all 4.5 rotating uber)
    Hazard - Oscar - Silva - Mirallas - Brady
RVP - Sturridge - Chamakh (if he goes to Palace)

Thoughts on team? I think it looks pretty balanced without Bale or RVP:

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Ivan, Mert, Garrido (Chester, Parr)
    Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Snodgrass (Thomas)
    Lukaku, Benteke, Soldado.

    Thanks all.

I am not a hater but because "he'll at least start GW1" which seems to be the best case scenario and even at that is a punt its a striker slot that at 7.5m may not be expensive but is also not cheap by a long stretch.
