West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

These bloomin' striker spots are an absolute headache.

The only one I'm sure about is RVP!

i keep swapping the remaining 2 between Sturridge, Dzeko, Lukaku and Giroud; all very viable options in their own right.

Anybody else in a similar dilemma?

Lukaku and Dzeko are the two who I have at present.

Although if Chelsea didn't have their DGW, then I probably wouldn't even consider Lukaku. And with Chelsea having Utd away in GW2 followed by a blank, I'm wondering whether Lukaku is worth the risk. At least with Giroud/Sturridge, you'll be getting guaranteed gametime with good fixtures.

I'll try - though it is good. Let's start with Pool....

Defensively, GJ is the way to go so you can ship Mig. This article suggest the best way of doing that. Forwardwise, I think Sturridge over Coutinho. Less sure about this but his ppmin last season was a little higher than Phillipe. If i can get a striker for the same value as a midfield, I'd opt for the former.

Finally, you want City coverage or GW3 will become quite scary. If your bold, go for Gecko but the smart investor will probably go for Aguero.

Early WC is a waste, imo.

And assuming that a GK will compensate a hit with a DGW is wishful thinking. If his CS odds are 70%, he'll get you about 9.6pts. Defenders give some upside and are easier to transfer.

And an early WC can be very powerful. Just look at Spiderm4tt, last years winner. He WCed straight after GW1 last season, to get the optimal set-up immediately, and clearing the DGW rubble.

i'm getting some slack for this but i'm genuinely under the impression some people don't realise.

i watch every man utd game basically so that's enough for me to form an opinion watching van persie's finishing every match but here are some numbers to back up my worries.

RVP scored in 6 of his last 20 matches last season. 2 of which were pens.

RVP scored in 14 of the 20 matches before that. 0 of which were pens.

i'm a watford fan and in so many ways van persie's season mirrored vydra's. scored for fun for 2/3 of the season then hit a wall, a wall which he appeared to break through in a match where vydra scored a brace including a wonder left foot volley from a long ball over his shoulder (van persie's hattrick v villa) but then even that maybe gave some false hope.

don't worry i don't take pre-season that seriously, but i'm looking for any glimpses possible to quell my fears and make me part with 14.0 this season. right now i'm still waiting

Are you actually arguing that his finishing got worse over the course season? That's just no realistic for a player at his age and his calibre. All forwards, barring perhaps Messi & Ronaldo, go through barren spells. He hit one towards the latter part of last season. It doesn't mean his finishing all of a sudden got worse.

He'd played he first full season for Arsenal ever, then went to the euros, then a full season with Man U. Its alot of football for a guy used to having a few months out with injury every year. With no summer competition this year he should be fine for the whole season.

      Good points.

If people are worried about Chelsea's Spanish players because of the Ecuador game, surely this applies equally to Soldado. Add to this the fact that he's new to the league and hasn't played much pre-season and there must be a considerable risk he won't start against Palace.

Spurs play Sunday 18th, game is on Wed 14th. Of course there's travel but Soldado may not even play and I think people are over emphasizing travelling.

Preseason fair point, I dunno if he's had any with Valencia or not. It looks like he's gonna play this weekend though and Spurs don't have the luxury to the extent Chelsea etc do to rest and rotate. 26mil man, he will start IMO

I think the guy is class, and if he is doing well enough to nail down a starring role, he's doing well enough to justify the 8m price tag and then some.

If he's in and out, i'll be steering clear until he does fulfil that undeniable potential

Nice to see a different team. Far better options than Faye and Gabbidon but apart from that it looks good.

FPL is the only one that counts. The others are simply to give me a greater FF workload and feed the addiction.

FPL. Have not tried any others honestly. I think i tried making a Sky team, but gave up. FPL is enough for me.

".. the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year.."

Sorry to be a paine, but it was Corinthians who won the brazilian title in 2005, not SP. They did whoever win the Campeonato Paulista (state championship) in 2005, followed by a brazilian league title in 2006 (and 2007,2008)

Lugano was great back then. Not sure now. It is a wait and see I guess

Mert & Collins. based on watching Everton in pre-season. I don't think they are comfortable yet in 3-4-3 or 3-5-2

I'm no pro and really respect the views of the posters here, but rather than do the gazillionth RMT wanted to ask the following:

      1. How can people use one of the 3 striker spots for Dzeko until it becomes clear he is locked on or someone gets hurt? Feels crazy to me and amazed that almost every RMT has him, feels like a lot of 35 minute appearances to me...

      2. How can people jump on the Soldado bandwagon so quick when that looks like a team that can struggle with the loss of Bale (like the Arsenal hangover last year). Easy enough to swap him in once he proves it?

      3. Why are fewer people not going with 5 strong MFs when the likes of Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Silva (for the early strech of easy games) and Mirallas are sooooo locked in. Tough to see passes on any of these guys when you can get a solid GK pair, solid rotating defense and 2 strikers out of Sturridge, Benteke, Lukaku (for the DGW) and Giroud. is the 343 THAT much better than a 352?

I agree 100% on the first 2, and I think the third is really debatable (which means that the 3-5-2 may be more viable early on this year).

        1. New manager said he is his number 1 striker
        2. Others could look to fill the star role Bale left behind. Someone will fill it.
        3. Silva is not the Silva of past seasons, and Coutinho is being rightfully overlooked for Sturridge iny my opinion.

I'm not necessarily supporting loading up in midfield, but you could easily replace Silva with Michu and make the same argument.

      Mignolet | Boruc
      Luiz | Mertesacker | Collins | Shaw | Brayford
      Hazard | Walcott | Coutinho | Mirallas | Kim
      Lukaku | Giroud | Dzeko

      bank: 0.5M

Luiz & Lukaku out for Coleman & Soldado before CHE blank. Hazard benched for GW3, but Kim has EVE (H), so not bad.

Sounds like a good team and plan..? 😉
