Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    B) Collins to Rat

      A) is probably the best pick at that price range. Although I believe Clyne might be fit for GW1 and if not then then definitely by GW2. Either one of Clyne or Tuner would be best.

I'd be nervous about Collins even for GW1. Try not to have set transfers in place post GW1 though. Its almost wasteful spending too many transfers on budget defenders whom you will rotate. Remember every transfer is worth 4pts.

Ward -> M.Turner (Norw) gets you three decent defense starters

      except you should also do

Collins -> Clyne (Sot) gets you a more nailed on starter... albeit Clyne is only 75% for GW1, but take it...

Collins is in doubt for GW1 more than Clyne
      Shaw out for GW1

if you find another .5 in your travels leading up to GW2, check GW1's Newcastle defenders and get one of them for GWs 2 through 5

(should I feel bad about dropping Everton colors for a season to support Moyes in his transition year at ManU? back to Everton next year...)

        Could go to Brayford/Chester/Cole/Turner/Clyne

and then if Clyne is good to go (website has him at 50%, though), could have Cole/Turner/Clyne in lineup with Brayford as first def sub.

I'll have another 1.0 when I flip Cole after DGW.

Hoping Yanga wins spot in Toon defense

Hmm, re: colors, mine are staying Blue. Moyes did great service but he has moved on. He won't come back and I'm not sure it would be good if he did come back. You just can't dial back the clock. I'll wish him well, for sure, but won't wish him THAT well. He does keep making noises about stealing Baines away, after all. And Fellaini. And he DID take a bunch of the staff with him.

Yes... this is key. Only should have Cech if you want him long-term. Otherwise, there's plenty of cases to be made for cheaper keepers, and that Cech will be cheaper by GW4.

I'm taking Cech for the season because I trust Mourinho to
        a) put Chelsea in more DGW situations than any other team this season...
        b) lock down his defense like in the good ol' days when The Special One managed the team before this Happy One took over...

This was my response to trigger earlier regarding the issue. Just my opinion but I think it makes sense.

"I don't know why exactly but I'm just far more confident with a Chelsea defender than I would be with Cech. This is possibly because it gives you the chance to assess the defender options out there after GW1. It gives you a chance to know who who the first team players are and whether they look like good prospects. From there its easy to trade the Chelsea defender for the defender you weren't confident about before GW1. There is nothing to be learned from trading Cech for Mignolet after the DGW, we all know Migs will be a decent option already."

Yeah but thats an emotional argument. The point for Cech which has merit, is that its no different than getting defender for a DGW punt. Both will cost you a transfer but at least Cech is nailed on for both games. My point above is that getting a defender instead gives you more options as to who to trade in once the DGW is over.

Not really, as I have a 4m defender spare for Ivan who will play, I either go 4.5m gk with Cech or sub him . . .

What Chelsea defender is more nailed on than Cech?

Trying to have the best nailed on players I can to maximize scoring... have a good player in a great matchup that doesn't play doesn't help my score.

Check the point totals for last year. Cech outscored all Chelsea defenders (by 1 point over Ivanovic).

I don't want to piddle around transfers on GK. I can always find good defender match-ups.

Over the whle season Cech is a great option. However I'm not convinced he's a good short term move unless you plan an early wild card. Its a wasted transfer to get rid of him otherwise.

Each to their own. I don't see it that way. It's a transfer that can be kept until necessary. Concentrate on getting the rest of your GW3 non-starters out without taking a hit. You have another sub keeper who can definitely start for you that week.

This is why I think he's a great option, if you haven't read it already.

Some of those stats refer to his long term prospects, in this discussion I'm keeping it purely to his short term prospects. For a DGW I think its better to go with a more explosive option like Ivan whom you can trade out for someone you weren't quite game enough to get for GW1. Basically if you want to trade a player, is it better to trade a keeper or trade a defender? I think the later

I think it makes no difference.

                  Short term pros of Cech:

                  Penalty saves (ok... slim)
                  Save points
Less chance of cards than defenders
Less chance of being subbed off before 60 minutes
                  Higher chance of starting both

I'm just holding him and letting Boruc play in his stead GW2 & 3. Not a big deal. Beyond GW3, Cech becomes a differential for me as majority will have WC'ed out.

I wouldn't want Cech long term personally but I can understand the appeal. Mourinho is quite good defensive manager. They will get more clean sheets this season imo.

Here's one for teh Deadzone clinic:

I have two possible teams... I need to decide between:
    A) Cech Boruc Toure Mert Coutinho Dzeko

    and

    B) Mignolet 4.0 Komp Ivan Snodgrass Sturridge

    Any salient thoughts?

Sounds good, and I have considered Newcastle defence, but the 4.0 is a gk slot. I could sacrifice my 4.0 def (currently Chester) though.

The trouble with B is Mig plays Man Utd early on, and I'd have to play him.

I reckon he'll come good, but might be a bit of a punt to start off with.

I think most people are so concerned with Man City and Chelsea teams (will Dzeko play, who'll be in the chelsea back line, how much gametime will Mata/Hazard/Lukaku get?) that they're looking for a degree of certainty elsewhere. He's not played in the PL before and he's coming into a team who didn't exactly bang them in last year - I think this explains his lack of interest.

Yes I think its a bit simplistic to suggest players will automatically be rotated in the Villa game. I'd expect a few players to play all three. They might simply be subbed to keep them fit and ready.

Nice team. maybe put a 4.5 mil mid in instead of Koren and upgrade Terry to Cole for GW 1? He more likely to play both games. The trans Cole back out after GW1 for maybe Zabaleta as City's fixtures are just oh so nice. That'll leave another .5 to upgrade somewhere else too...

Just a couple of queries if any scouts are around regarding the Team News section which I find useful and use on a regular basis:

    1) I see Cazorla isn't included in the Arsenal predicted lineup, with a front 6 of Walcott Ramsey Arteta Podolski / Wilshere / Giroud. Sure about this? I assume the starting lineup for the City game was an influence but Ox started too as did Podolski and neither were first choice in their positions at the end of last season (Podolski started ahead of Giroud at CF in the final game but we're expecting Giroud to be back there). I guess the other factor is the Spanish friendly, though I'm not sure how much gametime he'll actually get. Overall I would think he would be played if possible and he has had a long post Confed Cup break.

    2) Okore ahead of Clark in the Aston Villa predicted team?

no such thing as in the hole in Spurs. spurs will play 4-3-3 for as long as Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro(if fit)/Capoue.

Zab for Terry GW1 - he's bound to get at least one CS, possibly two and might (might) even pop up with a header....
