With just hours to go until the start of the new season, the community has been applying the finishing touches to their teams. We round up the hottest topics from the last week and also catch up with the latest action from your community leagues. If you have a community league that you would like us to include in these weekly round up articles, be sure to email me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Hottest Topics

The fifth midfield slot is often the final decision for Fantasy managers. Luckily, The Puntmaster was on hand for those looking at a rock-bottom priced player to fill that spot with a new section in his evolving spreadsheet comparing the 4.5m midfielders on offer in the Fantasy Premier League game. Other updates include a comparison of Manchester City and Liverpoolโ€™s respective luxury midfielders David Silva and Philippe Coutinho. Moidawg has also been helping out those looking for a cheap fifth midfielder by running the rule over those in the 5m bracket.

Another issue to vex our community has been which of the Premier Leagueโ€™s star Belgian strikers, Chelseaโ€™s Romelu Lukaku or Aston Villaโ€™s Christain Benteke, to pick for the double Gameweek 1. Among those answering Demiโ€™s discussion topic on this issue were Milanista who plans to opt for just the Chelsea man, while Pepin is taking no chances and wants both.

Moidawg has once again been burning the midnight oil during the deadzone, which takes place during the early hours, to look at the three key emerging template teams. According to his analysis,ย  โ€˜go hardโ€™ team manages to squeeze in Robin Van Persie and two other expensive strikers such as Lukaku and Roberto Soldado at the expense of good defence and midfield, while the โ€˜RVP budget teamโ€™ opts for a pricier midfield as well as the Manchester United striker. His final template, the RVP less team, is dripping with talent in every position but crucially lacks last seasonโ€™s top goal scorer.

With many familiar players already gracing the majority ofย  teams, SqueakyBumTime has been on the search for some differentials to help the community take an early lead in their mini-leagues. His epic trawl through the unfashionable picks with a low ownership is in three parts, covering strikers, midfielders and defenders.

Fancy a punt on Southamptonโ€™s cheap striker Jay Rodriguez, who is priced kindly in the FPL game at 6m? Perhaps you might think again after reading TexanRed‘s thoughts on the matter.

Meanwhile, our resident video expert Brutus619 has been at the pause button again to analyse the skills of some more Premier League imports. This timeย  heโ€™s been casting his eye over Liverpoolโ€™s forward Iago Aspas and Sunderlandโ€™s Jozy Altidore. Altidore, in particular, has really impressed him.

With the pre-season matches now wrapped upย  ZippyTFPL, with the help of Berbatov, has collected all those useful statistics from the previous weeks’ friendlies, including total goal involvement and minutes played.

Another to provide some useful analysis from the summerโ€™s friendlies has been Couti and the Below5th, who has been assessing who are the likely starters for each team based on their pre season appearances.

Finally, no last minute team change would be complete without at least considering whether Robin Van Persie is really worth his 14m price tag. Reckoner- Ajax Trees Down has been looking at the alternative moneyball tactics on offer for set to shunย  the Manchester United striker.

Community Leagues

The second transfer window of FFS Uefa’s transfer window simulation game sawย  total of 16 deals made during the week with Arsenal led by Zep, Stoke run by Dynamic and Everton managed by Saniul ย particularly active. Some of the highlights of the round included Cristiano Ronaldo moving from Anorak‘s Tottenham to ย The Shadow‘s Norwich and Juan Mata moving from Fulham run by Peppie and Felix to Arsenal and later to Stoke. Norwich still lead the game with Fulham, Everton and 4vets‘ Liverpool rounding out the top 4. Bids for defenders and submission of midfield targets must be made by Saturday 23:59 BST.

FFS UEFA’s famed FPL leagues, which are modeled on actual leagues with community members taking real life team names, will resume next week. In addition In Tommy We Trustย  will be running a number of leagues and reminds those who have qualified to join their leagues as soon as possible. Similarly, TorresMagic informs us that he is still inviting community members to join his leagues. More details here.

Negredo and Paulinho or Soldado and Snodgrass?

Positives and negatives for both. Can see Paulhinho as the furthest forward mid so should get a good few goals/assists....

Correct me if I am wrong: last season there were 2 FFS Cups and a League system with multiple divisions. I missed out on all of them. I've just browsed a lot of articles but I cannot find any information on this topic. Are they abandoned? Not started yet? Did I miss the deadlines again?

    Video from City's press conference:http://www.mcfc.co.uk/citytv/Interviews/2013/Manuel-Pellegrini-Newcastle-United-press-conference-part-I?play=1

Unfortunately he gives hardly anything away.

Nastasic to start training with the main group next week, doesn't say he could be in contention for GW 2.

Says Aguero is fine, but doesn't appear optimistic about his involvement for Newcastle.

Says he wont stick with one formation, will decide based on each match.

Reporter asked if he had an idea in his head about his 2 main strikers, he said no all 4 will be important etc. and we will see who's the best for each week.

Great stuff. To RVP owners, my question is do you expect to score even more this season? At that price and considering it's 2 million more compared to Bale who scored nearly equivalent points, why do you think he'll do better? Is having someone to throw the armband on every week worth it?

My belief is with a team like United in transition, Rooney acting up, Kagawa being a great playmaker who has yet to fit into that role behind the striker, there's no evidence to suggest he will. As I've said before, comparing his points last season to his price this season he has one of the worst points per million (second to Benteke) among the high fliers. Another point would be his dry spell, only broken by a penalty and a number of questionably offside goals. Will he retain that luck now?

What do people think of Whittingham for their 5th budget mid?

I'm ashamed to admit it but I played Fantasy Championship the past 2 seasons. 2 years ago Whittingham was THE must-have mid with a steady goalscoring and assist rate helped by his dominance on penalties and set pieces, leading to Cardiff turning down bids of (i think) £3m from a couple of PL clubs. That form nosedived roughly before christmas last year and he was dropped to bench duties for a few months but came back in towards the end of the season.

Maybe Cardiff fans here might know, but if he's assured his place from the beginning I think he's a far better prospect than Kim.

Ben Turner or Brayford more nailed on over the season? The Scout prediction showing Brayford on the bench worries me!

Need to find 0.5 from somewhere. Should I downgrade:

    a) Coleman to Collins

    b) Turner to 4.0

Turner is on my bench and I already have Brayford.

My problem exactly. I'm probs going with Coleman + Chester.

It's either find 0.5m or stick with Terry over Ivan

Here is my first and last RMT. I am trying an all defense approach this season:

    Guzan - Boruc
Baines - Kompany - Cole - Jose Enrique - Koscielny
    Hazard - Coutinho - (Schneiderlin - Jedinak - Boateng)
Van Persie - Rordriguez - Anelka

What can possibly go wrong? How do you rate this approach?

Different, I will give you that. I just don't think 5 defenders can get enough attacking returns (especially the likes of Cole and Kos) to justify the formation. But good luck, I appreciate your approach.

I'm not sure, been reading so many articles that it's all a bit or a blur for me at the moment haha, I seem to recall seeing quotation marks so I guess it's better than nothing ๐Ÿ˜€
