Mikel Arteta has been ruled out of Arsenal’s home game with Villa. Andre Villas-Boas is set to be without Gareth Bale for Spurs’ trip to Palace, where Jerome Thomas is sidelined for a couple of weeks for the hosts, Liverpool have good news on the defensive front and Southampton are still doubtful over Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw.

Our team news section has been updated on the back of the latest press conferences and will be refreshed as today unfolds – keep an eye on this and our twitter feed ahead of what is set to be a hectic next 24-hours for Fantasy managers:

Arsene Wenger will head into tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa without the influential Mikel Arteta. Speaking to the press in the last hour, the Gunners boss admitted he is uncertain when the Spaniard will return, though according to The Mail, the playmaker could be out for up to six weeks with the injury – potentially handing spot-kicks duties to Lukas Podolski and forcing Jack Wilshere into a deeper role alongside fit-again Aaron Ramsey in front of the back-four.

Although he ruled out the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Ryo Miyaichi, Wenger failed to mention Theo Walcott, Bacary Sagna or Santi Cazorla this morning. The first two had picked up minor problems on international duty, while Cazorla was late flying back from Spain’s match in Ecuador amid worries of fatigue – Fantasy managers will be optimistic the trio are fine, then, though some confirmation would have gone a long way to easing our fears as we finalise our squads.

Elsewhere in north London, Andre Villas-Boas looks set to be without Gareth Bale for Tottenham’s trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Welshman hasn’t played for three weeks due to injury and, when asked whether he would be available to face Ian Holloway’s side, Villas-Boas replied:

“No, because he’s been out injured for most of pre-season. He was involved in the games against Brentford and Swindon but not any others, for different reasons; pulled a muscle in his gluteus that prevented him from being involved for two weeks and he’s been complaining of pain in the foot. I think the most natural thing is to see him not involved against Palace.”

With Bale out of the equation, it’s possible that Gylfi Sigurdsson could tuck in behind Roberto Soldado, with Nacer Chadli on the left, if the visitors line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, though the Belgian has also been fielded in “the hole” during pre-season. Alternatively, Villas-Boas may opt for the 4-3-3 shape he preferred at Porto – a scenario that could see Paulinho as the most advanced central option, with Sandro, Mousa Dembele and new boy Etienne Capoue offering plenty dynamism in the middle of the park.

Brendan Rodgers has received some positive news ahead of Liverpool’s early kick-off with Stoke tomorrow. The Reds boss expects both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel to be fit to face the Potters, though while the Dane will return to the starting XI, Skrtel is likely to warm the bench – Kolo Toure is firmly ahead of the Slovakian in the pecking order and has started every pre-season friendly he has been available for.

Martin Jol will hand Alex Kacaniklic a late fitness test as Fulham make their way to Sunderland. The Cottagers boss has admitted Adel Taarabt’s fitness is still an issue and with the Moroccan only likely to make the bench, Kacaniklic could be in line for a starting role on the left wing providing he gets the all clear after impressing in pre-season, according to his manager.

Southampton full-back pair Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both remain doubts for tomorrow’s trip to West Brom. Speaking to the press yesterday, Mauricio Pochettino revealed the pair are making good progress:

“We’re very happy because Luke has responded well throughout the week. With one training session left tomorrow, I think he could be in the 18 players called up for the game against West Brom. Clyney has been recovering from a little niggle that he’s had since Austria. [His involvement] depends on the training session tomorrow but, if he’s not in the group for West Brom, he’ll be most probably available for the game after. “

Clyne pulled out of the midweek England Under 21 game against Scotland after being withdrawn in last weekend’s friendly win over Real Sociedad, while Clyne has yet to feature over the summer. Pochettino may turn to Danny Fox and Callum Chambers in the event of any potential absence and the Saints boss also conceded he has yet to assess the fitness of Gaston Ramirez and Maya Yoshida, who both featured in the Japan v Uruguay friendly on Wednesday.

Michael Laudrup was awaiting the return of Wilfried Bony yesterday, after Swansea’s new forward turned out for Ivory Coast against Mexico in New Jersey in the early hours of Thursday morning. Laudrup – who will be without Jonathan de Guzman due to concussion – seemed far from happy with the situation as he prepares for tomorrow evening’s match against United:

“Bony will be back late on Thursday with jetlag, which is not great. To play for your country is great and the club should be proud of all our internationals, but having a friendly three days before the start of the season is strange. This is the last year when it will happen fortunately. That’s an intelligent decision.”

Ian Holloway handed Fantasy managers a heads-up after announcing Jerome Thomas is ruled out for two weeks with the ankle problem that saw him limp off against Lazio after just 22 minutes last weekend. Yannick Bolasie added to Palace’s boss with a hamstring injury that will keep him out “for some time”, according to the Eagles boss. With his options on the flanks limited, Holloway could keep faith with Jonny Williams as an option out wide – fortunately, he comes in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same price as Thomas, and looks secure for game time in light of yesterday’s news.

RVP still has 43% ownership. the only way he will rise in price is if he gets a hat trick or a huge point haul. I just have to hope that doesn't happen.

When a lot of the n00bs get rid of him for getting less points than a 9.0 mill striker you can then get him for a little cheaper if you feel he is needed.

I for one will be staying clear of RVP. And getting Evra in GW4. He has the clean sheet bonus and I can see Man UTD being quite sturdy at the back with Moyes. He also provides a lot of attacking threat and at 7.5 cheaper. Hello!

I have an interesting view with Baines. Not wanting to start any Baineswagon or whatever, and pretty sure it won't happen here. But just wanna share it out.

We all can't deny the quality of Baines as a player. Good going forward, good set pieces, etc. He's popular with the casuals, but not around here. Why? Mainly because his price 7.5m puts people off.

Coleman is 2.5m cheaper, is playing the same position. But really, the main attractiveness of Baines is his set pieces - where no doubt he'll get way more goals and assists compared than Coleman. I don't see the prospect of getting a CS for Everton under Martinez, I'd rather get Toure on that price range.

There's also Mirallas at 7.5m. I can honestly see Baines as an alternative to Mirallas. Both are very attacking players, both are OOP. I know it's not an potato to potato comparison. A 7.5m midfielder does not equate to 7.5m defender. With Baines, you'll get the cheapest midfielder (4.5m), and with Mirallas, you can have a cheapest + 0.5 (4.5m) defender. So you can say, Baines is '0.5m more expensive' than Mirallas, is more or less same dangerous attacking wise, but nailed on with the set pieces.

This is the common back four and five mid of template team.

    Ivanovic - Kos - Clyne - Collins - Brayford
    Hazard - Wally - Coutinho - Mirallas - Kim

Kim 1st bench, 2nd bench whoever between the rotating Clyne/Collins, 3rd benchfodder Brayford.

Going with Baines, it'll change to

    Ivanovic - Kos - Clyne - BAINES - Brayford
    Hazard - Wally - Coutinho - THOMAS - Kim

People are put of because in this case you'll have to play Kim as the 4th midfielder, but why not consider playing 4-3-3 instead? I mean yes it's unorthodox but if that's where the points are then it may not be such a bad idea.

Kim still the 1st bench, Thomas will be 2nd bench, 3rd benchfodder still Brayford.

I know the downside you won't get a rotating backfour which is suckish but hey Baines points. But if a Stoke-esque defense emerge this year, why rotate? I played Cameron every week last year, And if you get the odds CS, it'll be a bonus. He's supposed to be more attacking than the years before, so you may expect him to score a few more goals or assists to offset his probable less prospect from CS.

So yeah, there you go. Anyone might be interested? I'm not, for now. But as the season goes, if Martinez do stick with 3-4-3 and Everton somehow still tight at the back, I might consider Baines.

Nice post, makes some sense. But without clean sheets, Baines only scored 5 and got 7 assists. I don't think that's enough for a 7.5m mid, personally. With the extra defender points, that's 6 goals and 7 assists. Maybe I'm asking too much.

I don't know if you're aware but you're on an old article. We're 17 pages deep into a new article now. Maybe you did it on purpose to keep the comments slow.

Yeah didn't aware of it. I typed this up before I went earlier today and forgot to post it. 😉

Have copied it to the new post.

He may score 5 and 7 assist last season, I can see him scoring 7-8 goals and getting a double digit assist playing OOP, which is probably still decent for a midfielder. And if we add up the odds CS with the new baps which is has in favour of, he can be a pretty good pick.

But yes there's a lot of IF in this case. I'm just putting this out there. Definitely on my watchlist

    In two minds about my attack, wondering if its worth keeping money in the bank to transfer players in that I'm not sure on now or just get them in and hope for the best. Here are my options;

    A) snodgrass, Nolan, aspas lukaku
    B)courthino, Morrison, dzeko lukaku
    C)courthino, Morrison, v.wolfswinkel, lukaku
    D)Walcott,Morrisson,aspas, lukaku
    E)snodgrass, Nolan, sturridge, lukaku

My plan is to have enough to upgrade lukaku to soldardo after seeing how he does against palace but with option a I also have room to manover either seeing who is likely to be nailed on for city or see if sturridge and or Walcott are fit, I like having money in the bank but I don't want to be taking hits to sort my team out all suggestions welcome

Yeah, that won't happen for a few hours. It's probably 3:40 where he lives if that's any consolation.

    Currently have defense of

    Mignolet Lewis
    Koscielny Coleman Toure Chester Burner

Always prefer to rotate but their value seems too good to turn down, any combos you prefer to this?

There's some good value defenders in the 5-5.5 range. Mine is very cheap:

      Mignolet, Lewis
      Toure, Collins, Murner, Shaw, Chester

Am similar but going Ivan for week one and Koac from next GW.

So not for me. Have Murner over Toure though
