Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

Oh missed the 2nd part. Soldado, as AVB stated, lacked sharpness. I think he should be a great forward, but Benteke, Sturridge, Giroud, and Bony offer cheaper alternatives, not equivalents, but alternatives nonetheless.

true. BUT if you have Soldado I think you should keep him. especially since getting out dgwers before the blank should be more of a priority and I think Soldado will still do well, and only get better as he gains sharpness

Wanted to get RVP in my team somehow, but can't see the best possible way to do this.

Other plan, is to leave my team as it is next week, and then after GW2 - Ivanovic + Lukaku OUT, two other players in.

    My team is as follows:

    Foster, Boruc
    Toure, Coleman, Ivanovic, Turner, Chester
    Hazard, Mirallas, Coutinho, Walcott, Kim
    Soldad, Lambert, Lukaku

    Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated 🙂

We have the exact same team except I have Migs and different sub defenders.

I too want rid of Lukaku next week, fancy keeping Ivan for the long run. MAY downgrade Hazard, not due to performance but more the abundance of quality midfielders Mourinho has.

Reasons why you needed to start the season with him.

IMO, if you were planning to get him for GW4 you should have just bit the bullet and gone with him from Day 1.

The guy is a threat to put up points on any given GW and wasn't it better to have built your team around him when you had unlimited free transfers to do it in, rather than now have to take points hits or spunk your WC for him?

I would look at Lukaku to Aspas, to free up some cash for Rvp if that is what you want.

Aspas looked really good and will only get better as the team starts understanding him better and vice versa.

Everyone seems to be saying that everton wont keep many clean sheets with martinez, but i disagree.

When he was at swansea they were brilliant at the back and even when wigan got the results against the likes of united keeping a clean sheet and winning 1-0.

Norwich played well but the 2 goals they actually got were pretty lucky in all fairness.

Also everton have generally better defenders than wigan so I think they'll do well at the back.

      Could go either way mate.

As a bitter Boyce owner of last year, I know how frustrating it is to solely rely on attacking points when that defender is 5+

I remember seeing 2-2 yesterday and thinking "thank fook I didn't get Coleman". Oh, how little did I know...

I think that is a fair enough point. Moyes sorted out cleanies at the back end of last season and the back 4 is the same - as long as Johnny Heits doesn't get a look in then they should be pretty tight at least at Goodison.

Ok, if you filter FPL by transfers in (round)

    Barkely 42,660
    Coleman 33,454

37,000 is needed for a rise

Barkley will rise tonight, Coleman will be touch and go

Anyone else tempted to hold onto Koscielny and just bench him for this week?
After observing that the bonus point allocation seems to favor central defenders and the fact that chelsea look very solid at the back i think that i will be brining in luiz after his GW3 blank. This move would have to be funded by lukaku to RVW - is this worth it?

I'm keeping Kosc for a week. One week on the bench doesn't significantly alter my perception of him as the best value at 5.5 for a defender. Of course, another couple bad weeks for Arsenal could change that perception.

I caved and shipped him for Coleman. Nothing to do with the suspension though and everything to do with Arsenal's defence / injury list.

I am in a game "last man standing"

50 people, £10 each, winner takes all.

You pick a side who will win each weekend.
If right, you survive. If wrong, you are out.

BUT. ONCE YOU USE A CLUB, YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM AGAIN.

As Chelsea have Utd, blank, Spurs, Fulham derby, Everton, I used them today in easy home to Hull game.

Who would you all use next week
I think I will stick to home sides.

    City week 3
    United week 4.

Will Spurs be wise next week?

Don't you want to use some weaker teams rather than lose all the top sides straight away? Everton at home to West Brom looks good to me. Maybe even Stoke at home to Palace but obviously more risk there.
