Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

Whittaker can be replaced with another 4.0, Toure & Coleman to play every game.

Good point re Lamps...perhaps i'm better off keeping Hazard and downgrading Walcott?

Assuming there are no injuries to deal with, which Chelsea player should I lose first? Lukaku or Ivanovic? At the moment, it would be Lukaku to Lambert or Ivanovic to Zabaleta. I may leave both and have the luxury of 2 FTs in GW3 but it seems right to ship one of them later this week.

I'm someone with Lambert on my team and well it will make sense to take out Lukaku to put in Lambert, but as the whole Osvaldo situation is on the cards now that he is a southampton player, Lambert may be part of a rotation with Osvaldo, maybe, or he can even start in a 4-4-2 with himself and Osvaldo up front, but for now, you should wait when this site makes a new article about Osvaldo

i don't think it's as much about the long-term, as it is the captaincy.

his 250pts overall actually translates into about 400 with all of the captaincies

as someone planning on weaking overall line-up for GW4, must say it is a bit concerning WR when even he scoring a double doesn't represent value!!

i fully expected him to get his goal a game while i was a non-owner, now i'm questioning lightening a midfield AND a striker slot to fit him in

definitely hold on. if you liked him pre-season, it couldn't have been with a big first few weeks in mind? cardiff's draw is a little hard early, but he looks the best of the 5.0 mids

Doing decent this week, 57 points, Lukaku, Hazard and Zabaleta to play. I've formed a game plan for the next few weeks, which, unless injuries strike, should go okay. However, this week, I'm taking out Lukaku, partly due to the blank GW, partly due to rotation risk. Who do I bring in, Lambert or Dzeko? Both have very good fixtures for the next few weeks. Obviously depends on whether Dzeko will be nailed on or not.

@ sanchez or any other non rvper

As a non rvp and non early wcer like me,

What are your plans to bring him in? I suspect his price will rise before next week? Or certainly before week 4.

Man utd vs Liverpool is typically a goal fest is it worth taking a - 4 to get him in after gw2? Hazard - - > 5.5/5 then Soldado or benteke to rvp? (depending on performances and fixtures)

      I have this plan

      Ivan to 4.5
      Lukaku + 1m to Aguero

Then week 3, Hazard to West Ham mid

      Week 4, Aguero to RVP

That allows me a 6.5m mid for hazard when he blanks.
If rvp rises, that lowers a bit.

His price is sort of slow to rise though as upgrading wont be easy for many.

        Ah okay,

I've done lukaku to Lambert +0.5

Next week I plan to do hazard to a playing 4.5/5m

Then Soldado to rvp... But if Soldado benteke Lambert have a stormer I am in such a tough spot next week. And may stick it out without the van man

Well this knee has jerked. I cannot, in good conscience, live without RVP.

I suppose it was only the temptation of the Chelsea DGW that stopped me getting him in the first place, so it's Lukaku and Hazard gone, RVP and Barkley in (I left 1m in the bank to make it possible).

Leaves me needing to play a budget option every week - and I wouldn't normally knee jerk for someone like Barkley, but his price is set to go up, and home to West Brom is a decent game that he should feature in.

Yeah, you're right. But my money's always on players ahead of teams. If no one from Chelsea or Man City will play every week, then you're probably better off looking at nailed on targets from elsewhere in the league. Benteke got god knows how many points last year for a team that nearly got relegated.

Also, missing out on Chelsea at the moment is fine - they've got no fixture GW3, and I only really punted on them at this stage for the double game week. I'm happy to wait and see if anyone emerges as a must have.

Every single year I never seem to do that well in the 1st GW. Too many unknowns in terms of team selection and systems. Plus new managers coming in and new players to the league. All we have to go off is pre-season friendlies which can be very misleading to say the least (Lukaku 😕 )

So anyway, just want to say we should all keep our knees in check. The cream always rises to the top. Just keep playing your game and don't let others persuade you to make rash transfers and chase the points already scored (Coleman!!!!).

Stick to your game plan & may god be with you 😉
