Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

It's so far achieving the agenda they had for it (artificially boosting defenders' scores), but it in no way reflects who the 3 best players in a match were.

I don't think the old system was great either, but this one is very poorly designed. No way should Chesny be getting baps because he conceded a penalty (-1 bps) and then 'saved' it but not really (+5bps!). Terry, Cahill & Cole don't deserve baps for sleepwalking through a match in which they barely had to do anything. Defenders scoring half as many bps for a goal as forwards do seems weird.

I'm all for defenders getting more baps, but arbitrarily assigning them some isn't the way to go about it.

Same here! People are saying to weight until after the Villa game. But the way I see it, even if Lukaku starts that game and does well there will still be too much rotation at Chelsea to keep him. No?

Sick of complaints about bonus system in fairness people are not going to be happy with any system regardless of how fair it is. The only system that could possibly pass without complaint is if every player got 3 pts. I want to keep them because they make the game more exciting but quit complaining.

I for one think FPL have done a great job with the Bonus system to keep the game alive and not favouring just the goalscorers. Whatever means are used to derive bonus points there will always be grumbles. However FPL have at least made it much more transparent as to where and how the bonus are compiled - so well done them. Loving this season already, even though only had an average start.

Such a good season ahead - so many good options that a 'template' side is going to be difficult to arrive at. Wide open folks - do your worst! 🙂

No outstanding displays from forwards that make them a must have except RVP

I think Kaboul will likely take Dawson's place, it's just a question of how soon. I expect Dawson to mostly play cup and Europa matches.

Today's line up is first choice, however I expect them all to be rotated at some stage. Vert would be least likely to be benched however imo

Bap system is deffinitely crazy, defenders are getting rewarded too much for keeping a cleen sheet
Examples: terry 2.cole 2. cahil 2,LOVREN 3,shaw(just an assist 3pt),Vert 2,Dawson 1.hangeland 3,Hughes 2,obrien 1 , reid 1,johnson 3. I would even put Mignole and especially Schezny with 1pt although he was Awfull and didnt even save the penalty properly.

I think its fair...If your teams scores only one goal and you as a defender kept a cleansheet...you helped win the game just as much as the scorer did....Would be a draw if you didn't keep it tight at the back

i dont agree, chelsea and tot defenders were not pushed at all , and even if they get something it should not be 2 or 3 points

Evening guys. Off to a good start, much thanks to you!

What's the news on Brayford? Was far as I could see he was not in the team at all. Injuried?

If selling Ivan, who would be a good replacement. Have Shaw, Debuchy/Y-Mbiwa, Toure(already have Migs) in mind. Current defs are Coleman, Zab, Collings and Chester

Not sure that toure is worth the extra .5 over either of them Whom do you prefer, shaw or clyne?

Is Fiso now unreliable? Seems to be way behind according to transfers in on the FPL homepage.

The numbers are never the same, there appears to be a factor dividing the fpl numbers down. Buts its always been like that.

You'll still get any points he scores against Villan if you transfer him out today.

Do you have any money in the bank? Someone to captain next week?

If you can stretch to Soldado or a City striker ( if one becomes a viable option after tomorrow night) then do it.

Best like-for-like price wise is probably Bony who has great fixtures from GW6 onwards too.

If you want to save a bit of money to upgrade someone else i n the near future, JRod looks a good shout.
