Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

I see alot of chatter about not wanting to have Migs and Toure on the same team, but I fail to see the logic in this. What is wrong with double dipping if you're getting excellent return on investment from both players. Yes, it's nice to diversify but not just for the sake of doing so and overlooking an obvious opportunity in the Liverpool defense. Afterall, most of these leagues are about total points and not head to head so the occasional double whammy won't affect you that much because you'll be making out twice for the 16 or so clean sheets you're gonna get. Am i taking crazy pills or what!?

Doubling up is fine IMO, but I'm not doing it on the basis of one game against a weak attack.

You are not taking crazy pills. Figure Liverpool for 14-16 CS this year - a slight improvement on last year - then doubling up makes sense especially since you probably can't find 2 other GK/Def for 10.5 who will get that many. Just prepare for those occasional games where L'pool get hit for 2-3 goals and your total is 2 or 3 from those players.

The only problem with it is that it takes up 2 Liverpool spots. If they get a good run of fixtures you might want 2 of Sturidge/Suarez/Cout/Stevie G/Aspas

I am wondering which Chelsea players to drop out too. I have Terry, Lampard, Lukaku and Benteke - and I kind of thought they were all worth holding.

I thought Lukaku would get the start today. It seems really obvious to me that Torres has not only lost a step or 2 from his prime but lost confidence. Does he have pictures of someone with farm animals or something ? Or is it Abramovich can't admit he made a huge mistake ?

FISO...37,000 net transfers to get a rise. Last year i thought it was approx 27,000 with similar amount of players.

    Either:

    1. They have not "cracked the code" yet
    2. FPL is giving us a break.

imo....i would not rely on it 100% yet....seem a little wonky. i.e. Mata 57,000 Net transfers out to get a fall. Not even flagged!

If you intend to keep Coleman long-term, then it could be a good move.

What do you intend to do with Mannone? He didn't start obviously, but do you have any confidence that he'll get game time?

      B, first

knee jerky, but the obvious move

      ---

also, I would also your Lukaku transfer choice to RvW from Bony because:
      - Bony has bad fixtures
      - RvW has good fixtures the next two weeks leading into the int'l break (aka, the wild card bonanza where prices can really start to move)
      - and the extra 1.0 in the bank will give you flexibility to make other moves in the coming weeks (and to hold onto your own wild card until later in the season)
      - Lastly, in the same price range - 7 or 7.5 - you could also consider Berbatov & Altidore. The question with Berba is if he's is still The Man with Bent on the team (probably, he is). The question with Altidore is will he score the next two weeks and moreover, even if he did, would you want him after the int'l break when his fixtures get ugly.

The beauty of watching baseball, even Sox Yankees with loads of ARod theatre tonight, is that you have plenty of time between pitched and at bats to check out FPL numbers.

Took a look at the Bonus Points awarded this weekend, and not sure if this has been posted yet, but here's the distribution:

    GK 4
    DEF 29
    MID 15
    FWD 17

Now much has discussed about how defenders are on the rise with BPS, but what strikes me is how baps overall might be on the rise. Certainly it's early, but 9 games @ 3/2/1 dsitribution = 54 pts, while the above totals are actually 65 pts (20% more). And, 12 players got 3 pts and 10 got 2 from the nine games so far, so it isn't just a bunch of extra 1s.

I had dismissed much of the BPS talk this summer as not significant enough to influence decisions on player selection (had figured it'd be 5-10% of most of the elite players I looked at), but if these really are going to be so close and so plentifully awarded, then it might have a greater impact (perhaps 15-20%?) on player scores -- a BPS magnet might be as important as an assist leader.

***No idea if this was the case when it was PPI-based. Can't find that data, and even if I could, the game I'm watching isn't that slow.

It's a great point you make and thanks for crunching the numbers. I agree, i think there could be some value in having a few of the mid-priced defenders who are strong in the areas that accrue BPs. For example West Ham had two defenders getting BPs, Chelsea 3, etc. Reid, Terry and Mignolet have outscored my entire midfield and forward line by some distance.

The bonus structure is similar to Fantasy MLS. However in MLS, there are unlimited bonus points up for grabs where in the EPL baps are capped at 3-2-1 points given to approximately 3 players

I have been playing fantasy MLS this season and defenders are among the highest scorers because of this structure. It has almost ruined the game. Thankfully in EPL only 3 players get baps.

Interesting -- so a player could go Berbatov one match and get more than 3 baps? Could get out of hand...

More than 3 can get baps in FPL, I think; I counted 2 gk, 15 def, 6 mid, 8 fwd (31 instead of 27)

Yes, but with plenty of rotation with DeBryunne and Schurrle in the mix. Intriguing for me is whether Mourinho will rely on his old favorite Lampard as nailed on alongside Ramires. Lampard is coming from the double pivot but showed today he gets forward plenty. He was left out of the side a lot under Benitez for no discernible reason last year. I just wonder if he gets ~30 starts this year whether he'll be back in the 170+ point range.

      I'd go for Sturridge.

I'd have normally said swap Ivan out for Coleman but with the Arse defence in tatters i'd maybe take out Mert instead. No, take out Ivan - you have the blank in GW 3 to think about.

Which tranny should I do next:

    Ivanovic > Shaw
Hazard > Courtinho (already have Sturridge)

I could save it but would prefer to swap now due to Chelsea rotation risk and the fact they're against Utd next.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of ruing missed chances with people having taken out the likes of Coleman, Nolan, Soldado, Mignolet, etc. But remember it's a long season and rarely do these players then go on a string of similar performances ... from last year the only real consistent early bandwagons were Michu, Zabaleta, Baines and Jussi.

My point is: keep calm and have faith in your pre-season planning!

The hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours or monitoring pre-season, trial games, new signings, past form, position on the field, heat maps, ability to shoot off the wrong foot, relationship with the manager, manager's style of play, team continuity, out-of-position players, form, confidence, media pressers, etc.

Only to then have that player benched GW1

Arsenal were one of the top defensive teams last year. 1 game does not make a season. And you have Toure to hoover up the CS points. And Toure hit the bar. So, if Toure had scored and Migs given up the pen, you'd be bragging to beat the band.

I have Koscielny, and I'm already agonizing over what to do. The rest of my defence is playable next week, but I'm reticent to accept any price falls.
But that said, Arsenal were one of the most resilient sides defensively last year. They have an excellent run of fixtures, so keeping Koscielny, even if his price falls, is not crazy.
Were you planning on shipping Terry anyway? If so, do B.

My biggest worry is the lack of captain options...I am waiting till GW4, though. Mourinho's Chelsea won't be easy to break even at OT and then I trust the 'Pool defense to contain United. Can't see RvP having double digit hauls in the next two. Also his price isn't likely to spike up given high ownership and high price.

Oh, and going for Mignolet, Toure and Coutinho was a very bad tactical error on my part. Prevents me from getting Sturridge, who's the only replacement for Lukaku I like so far.

I already have Michu so Bony doesn't appeal given the fixture list. I am yet to check Lambert's stats, just saw he scored from the spot.

I'll be watching the City/Toon game closely tomorrow. I think Cisse could be the sleeper for this season. Given Newcastle's fixture following the City game, he could definitely be a viable option

Looking at Newcastle's fixtures, I would be very willing to give him a chance. When is Remy back as he is potentially a threat to his place, I'd guess.

Remy ruled out for the Man City clash. Could be a chance for the following week, as far as I'm aware

Yeah, but at least you didn't hold off on Mignolet because you wanted to keep the Coutinho possibility open...

Stay. Would create for a lot of team diversity - Bale, no Bale, RvP, no RvP, etc. I would love that.

yup... and that's the one thing that finally stopped my knee from jerking any further... positioned myself to go Haz -> Bale if he stays...

although, pending the Fenerbache game results, I kind of want to double down on Arsenal offense, I'm expecting some anger and goals, or goals and anger, from them.

but now I wait on Bale first.

I wouldn't hold / make your transfer plans around Bale, to be honest. Play for the most points / team value as is...if you have to bring him in, you can take a 4 point hit. Don't crippled your team strategy while waiting on him.

FPL wise it doesn't really matter I think. He could be a good option, or Coutinho/Hazard/Walcott could deliver 90% of his points at 75% the price. I hope he stays because he's one of the world's best and I'd rather he stayed in the EPL.

    Boruc Marshall
    Terry Turner(Nor) Merte Chester Turner(car)
    Cou Hazard Walcott Snodgrass Williams
    Dzeko Lukaku Soldado

    I save 2 transfers, then:

    Terry -> Toure
    Merte -> Coleman
Lukaku -> vWW or someone else

For a hit, or take an 8 points it and I ditch Snodgrass too?

    Please help?

better... waiting a bit is good

Snodgrass should be healthy next week but does have the deficiency of leading all midfielders in transfers out at this time (how he got ahead of Bale miffs me)

Forgot Aspas at 7.0 on my list of striker options before - my bad

regarding Mertesacker: Koscielny (card) & Monreal (health) should both be back in 2 game weeks... you could hang in with Mert

          so...

*if* you want Coleman before his price goes up, probably have to go Terry -> Coleman soonish

*but* I would think first whether you want Toure or Coleman more for the long term... and you have more time to decide with Toure.

I'd advise avoiding a hit (and should try taking my own advice some time), and wait until Lukaku is close to reaching his target # of going down in value before letting him go. In the meantime, you can think more on who you want to replace him

Hope this wasn't too disjointed... getting late here

I like Terry to Coleman and Lukaku to Lambert. Got same front 3 as you and probably will be doing Ivanovic-> Coleman and Lukaku -> Lambert for a 4 point hit myself. Keep Merte imo, he will come good.

As someone mentioned before I think JRod would be a bigger risk and not Ricky. He has score for England recently, Pochettino can't ignore that, at least for a few games imo.
