Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

I've done some analysis of the BP's from GW1 so far

    Goalkeepers - 4pts
    Defenders - 29pts
    Midfielders - 15 pts
    Forwards - 17 pts

Interesting stuff I think and shows that perhaps the cheapo defence may not be the best option this year. Also from the defenders, only 2 of those that got BPs - Shaw and Coleman with 3 BPs each contributed goals/assists.

Early days but it is interesting, and it seems that we dont need to wait for 0-0 draws or goals/assists like we did last season for BP's to go to defenders

Wouldn't go 5 but depending on fixtures 4-3-3 may be more appealing than in the past.

This would be interesting. If we have a a few teams who are good defensively and hit good fixtures, fielding 4 or even 5 at the back could be a viable tactic, but remember, it's only up to 3 extra points

Trying to avoid knee-jerking (we've seen almost all this week's football now right...?)

    What do we think of:

Lukaku -> Soldado (beginning to think that he's a season-keeper)
Hazard -> Sigurdson / Paulinho (erring towards Siggy since he's on corners and some free kicks it seems)

Will probably wait but with Spurs upcoming schedule this seems sensible (can't afford Soldado witohut making another transfer... so its two or none this week)

I am not sure about downgrading Hazard. He did get into the box quite a lot in the opening minutes, had 3 or 4 shots blocked or they would have been goals. Anyway, you'll have to see really, not many mids performed this week, keep an eye on Ben Arfa if you really want to, has some good fixtures from GW2.

    Posted on the wrong article.

Anyone still thinking of not going with RVP?

My thinking is that, under Moyes, there might be a midfielder (hopefully) who will share some attacking returns. And everyone here has been talking about his value, I honestly think that he offers decent value if you captain him week in week out, but there are so many strikers over 8 million and so this season compared to last season, makes me wanna think that maybe we could do well still without having RVP in. For example, RVP + Anelka would cost you 19.5 million, whereas 2 of Soldado, Sturridge and Benteke would save you a million (or more) and you could still score higher than the RVP pairing with Anelka. It's all about finding the right captain choices now, and I think the options this year are in abundance.

not worth dropping either arsenal player, none of their next 3 opponents played particularly well opening day and they look set to make some signings before the window closes

I wouldn't really bench anyone worth that much, only if they had a blank. But Mourinho's probably thinking it.

Deffianately a moyes type player. Zaha will have to learn how to defend before moyes plays him.

“Stekelenburg says it is a bad injury but hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks now," Jol said. "He had it before on the other side and it’s not dislocated but it is painful and could take more than a couple of weeks.”

No f*cking way. Quotes from Mourinho a few mins ago.

"We will try until the last day to add a new player to the squad. A striker. But in this moment every striker has a club, every striker belongs to somebody so I won't name players who belong to other clubs."

    Another striker 😯

Selling Rooney to Chelsea would be the worst possible start for Moyes. Really can't see it unless they super secretly have Ronaldo lined up or something.

Got an insatiable desire for points. Reckon I could break 100 this gw and still need more.

Man City and Newcastle have the nicest looking fixtures upcoming, will definitely be waiting to see who is on form tomorrow before making any moves.

Oscar speaks portugese as does Mourinho.

I have seen relationships built on less.
