City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Agreed, incredible that he didn't get a goal last night. On a good day he could've scored 4.

Of course he could. But for the next two, I think he looks the main man untill Negredo establishes himself in the team. Plus Dzeko looked the most confident I've seen him in 2 years almost. And the football City were playing was brilliant.

Cardiff and Hull. Can't ask for more than that. I wouldnt be able to enjoy the game if I didnt have any City players. Thats another reason.

All true but last night he played against a woefully bad Newcastle team and he got 4 pts. Don't get me wrong he as potential to score big but he also has the potential not to even play. I think zab, sliva , and yaya are better city picks

A lot depends on how long you plan to have him for. I'd say for the next two weeks alone, maybe even 3, he is one of the best options to have.

Zab and Silva are nailed on. I've got them both - contemplating Dzeko in as well for the next 2. The upside is worth the risk against 2 promoted defences.

Not that incredible, I'd put a fiver on City to win with him to score anytime. Obviously he was going to miss at least 8 chances.

      The City Conundrum

So, we have a team that could well win the league, with a manager who likes to play attacking football in charge of the best squad of attacking players in the league, with excellent fixtures.

Normally that would be a reason for getting at least one, and possibly two city attackers.

But here's the problem as I see it. City are too much of a team. By that I mean that every one of their midfielders and strikers carries a goal/assist threat and, as we saw last night, it is very conceivable that they could win 2/3/4-0 again and again, with different scorers and different players providing the assists.

Unlike RvP at United, Benteke at Villa, etc. there is no real "focal point" of the attack. You could argue that we've only seen one game, but given the squad Pellegrini has and his desire to tailor his team selection to the opposition, rotation could be a nightmare.

I really can't see any City players worth getting. Dzeko won't keep starting - yes he looked threatening, but also spurned a lot of chances. The only real regular will probably be Silva, as he is their most creative player through the middle. But how often are we going to see him play the pass before the assist, say a defence-splitting pass through to Navas, who squares to Dzeko/Aguero/Negredo/Jovetic for a tap-in.

My instincts are telling me to get a City attacker, but can anyone really make a persuasive case for it?

Well said -I have Negredo and I went for him over Soldado , I knew city would win at a canter and I wanted coverage without having to go down the Silva route .
Tbh I'm ginna hold tough on Negredo for the weekend as I think he will start with Aguero - whom I believe along epithelial Zabaletta to be the only 2 worth having for the long run.

Good point about Zabaleta (and by Matakuko below)

My only worry at the moment is their defensive injuries - if Kompany is out even weak teams have a chance of scoring at set pieces... so I'm not sure, I would like Zabaleta but don't yet know if I can trust their defence!

Same boat, I think I'm going to stick with the RVP/SolDADDY combo until we get a better idea if there are any crucial city players. For now, I think 1 regular at the back who gets himself forward (Zaba) is the only real option for city coverage.

My instincts tell me to get 3 City attackers and hope two play, cos they'll still score more than 3 from elsewhere.
As long as I have a playing bench.

That's an interesting approach, and perhaps it makes more sense than getting one attacker. But it might be tricky to manage, and would make choosing a captain a nightmare!

I do like the guts of it though, just go for complete saturation and hope the 2 that play make up for having someone aweful (but playing) on the bench

I would say it's a risk to take the hit. Chelsea could well score at Old Trafford, so I would get rid of Terry and keep the others. Taking a hit would mean Silva would need to score or get 2 assists to pass break-even, and that's if the Chelsea player you get rid of does nothing!

nowadays with all those 'astronomical' sums that clubs like City, Real, PSG, Chelsea are able and sometimes eager to pay, I am not sure anymore what 'worth' means. Because it is all about how much this or that multimillionaire is gonna pay.

Tough I gotta agree - 28M for these 2 players is not the money I'd sell them

They didn't get to where they are by not chancing their arms with asking price for top players though. They could do with Fellaini more than Baines I reckon. Moyes has Evra and Buttner , possibly Varela also as LB cover. Baines is nearly 29, looks good at Everton where they don't have as many attacking options as United.

Insulting is nothing to do with it. They will pay the minimum they can, or will be trying to - if they have pitched this too low then it might be embarrassing but it isn't insulting.

I know, sitting back and looking at it its pretty good, im just so annoyed with the choices I made last sat morning(11.20am), no coleman or dzeko when they were in 90% of my previous draft teams. its going to take me 2/3 transfers ( possibly 4 point hits) to get to the team I should have started the season with .ggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

yeah after replies here i'll put the w/c on hold and I can wait until fri/sat to decide what I want to do regarding luk >dzeko. still not convinced on dzeko though on goalscoring or gametime and hes never going to be a viable option as captain imo. but their next 2 fixtures could get huge returns for the chosen city frontline.

it all depends on your strategy.

                  I am leaning towards Zab + Coleman being played every week + 2 x 4.5 to rotate + 4.0 back-up

Very tempted to save my FT - too many unknowns at the moment and the Coleman and Barkley bandwagon could backfire. Gives me another GW to assess whether I want to:
                a) Downgrade Hazard or Lampard
                b) Swap out Lukaku
                c) Dump Mertesacker

All 3 options have plenty of good players I good bring in based on the 1 GW so far........

I think that is risky I think alot of people are going to have Dzeko because Lukaku - Dzeko is such an easy transfer and its going to hurt if he scores big.

Ivan + Lukaku to Clichy + Aguero (-4) a no brainer right? Planning on captaining Aguero even if he is going to be subbed off after half time.

                Transfer Advice please!
Clyne -> Shaw (and hopefully pick up £0.2m profit by next week in the process
                OR
Walcott -> Silva (add £0.5m to the kitty. Not sure why I didnt start like this in the first place to be honest).

Clyne is the better pick long term
Walcott plays a reserve left back this weekend

Great advice on the latter. I am still considering the first tho for that £0.2m. I can always transfer Clyne back in at a later date for the £0.1m profit on team value. Im really happy with the rest of my team so happy to use up 2 transfers for the profit.

What's the point? Clyne and Shaw are very similar; Walcott won't always get 2 points. Calm down.

                    Both seem like sideways steps

What happens next week if Walcott bags a goal and assist and Clyne/shaw both get 2/3 put past them? Wasted transfer IMO.

Benteke and Hazard are season keepers. Ivan can go. Lamps will be rotated at some stage. I'd do:
                      Ivan > cheaper, say Coleman/Shaw
Lampard > one of teh following you don't have: Coutinho, Silva, Walcott etc

Looked good, in the box a lot, mainly central. A lot of City players looked great, but due to the rotation of the front men, i'd only feel confident with YaYa or Silva. Even 7.5 strikers on the bench is stupid in my eyes. If i'm spending that money, I need to be confident he'll play.

                Good day people.

2.5m itb but not really sure what to do with my team:-

                Cech Marshall
                Toure Lescott Clyne Murner Chester
                Hazard Nolan Walcott Nolan Kim
                Dzeko Lukaku Sturridge

I think i'll keep Cech for GW2, potential CS or save points even if CHE concede at OT. I reckon CHE will be tight at the back this season, that's how Mourinho played it last time around.

                Options are:-
                1. Lukaku > Soldado (solid captaincy choice this week)
                2. Haz > Silva (and have 3 MCI players for their lovely fixtures)
                3. Haz > 6/5.5 mid (probably Jarvis, with Lukaku > RVP straight swap later in mind)
                4. save FT

Not necessarily. at 9.5m, i expect my player to be the key figure in his team for points (Walcott, Cout, etc.) but CHE mid is rotation nightmare and i don't like my player to share points. Plus, he kinda off form too.

Is anyone else feeling pleased with gambling on aguero? Him, Coleman and mingolet have been my gw1 successes, hoping hazard and Lukaku can step up tonight

I gambled on Shaw. That made me happy.

I'd be feeling reaaaal good if I gambled on Aguero from the start. Nice one.

Thoughts on this team for Gameweek 2:

                Lloris, McGregor (SUB)

Evra, Kompany, K Toure, Yanga M'Biwa (SUB), Bruce (SUB)

Hazard, Paulinho, Santi Gazorla, Shelvey, Yacob (SUB)

                Bony, Negredo, Torres

Toss up between playing Celustka (sou / Lambert) or Figeuroa (NOR / Wolfie)

Yes folks, my life is THAT exciting.

I suppose the homeboy advantage wins.

Kind of dampens my decision to bring in Wolfie though.

No, it doesn't. You are after points, not supporting a team.

Rip van Winkle is untried so far though.

Mignolet (Boruc - to start GW2)
                Toure / ShawX / Coleman / Garrido / Koscieleny
                Hazard / Silva / Coutinho / Morrison / Snodgrass
Lambert (thinking of C for GW2) / Dzeko / Lukaku

Will wait for mid week game but leaning towards Lukaku > Soldado purely based on rotation risk and Spurs favourable draw

                Currently 1.5m up my sleeve

Any other advice for the next few weeks. Keep faith with Kosc / Snodgrass ?? Like to have clean sheet options but is defence too expensive?

                Cheers

Can someone explain why no player has dropped. Last night there was a few that should of dropped. Morrison was on 84% and this morning he was on 64% and no price drop

Because they need to get to 100% to drop, I believe.

Maybe people bought him in or the required % to drop were changed.

He wasn't going to drop at 84%.

FPL have clearly moved the goalposts on transfer numbers. Maybe in celebration of goal line technology.

If money was no obecj would you go with AGUERO , DZEKO or NEGREGO in your team?

Aguero surely still the main man and clearly back in form?....

Im keeping Sturridge and Benteke, but need to get in a city striker for Lukaku....

Think I will go with Aguero with those fixtures and his nailed-on-ness.....

Aguero -> Dzeko -> Negredo in that order. I'm guessing Dzeko/Aguero starting against Cardiff, with Negredo getting 30 mins. But what do I know.

Negredo starts with Aguero, he was on Spain duty and is just being eased in. But what do I know, maybe he did buy him for backup to Dzeko...

Back in form based on one game against a disjointed Newcastle, had far fewer chances than Dzeko, will face sterner tests. I'm holding off for a bit.
