City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I know you didn't ask me, but I reckon the defence is up in the air apart from Reid and to some extent Collins.

I would say that Rat, O'Brien and Demel will all get similar game-time.

I'm sorry but how has Dzeko not been awarded the first assist? Shots that get saved count as assists but slightly deflected crosses don't? Makes no sense

A saved shot was a shot on goal that set someone else up to score. The ball usually ends up in play right on the goal mouth

A deflected shot could go anywhere and the defending player has the last influence on it, intentional or not.

Thems the rules - as long as it is consistant it should be fine.

Sure, but at least a deflected cross is attempting to set up a team mate to score? Surely thats worth an assist more than a shot at goal that doesn't go in? Obviously last season with crosses that were headed out given as assists was stupid, but Dzeko's was different. Just don't see that as consistent

I didn't mean it has to be consistant with a different set of rules from last year. Just that if they are consistant this season if should work out.

E mail the FPL for clarification if you don't think it is correct.

Lambert no longer 100% starter, I fear, at least once Os has settled in. Saints tend to play one outright striker through the middle, and they aint paid £14m for bench fodder. Rickie still no.1, but definitely prone to rest and rotation I reckon

      D. But it's tricky as you're technically swapping one rotation nightmare for another. Possibly A with that in mind, but i'd want rid of Lukaku. Dzeko was very involved.

Get rid of Lukaku as priority IMO. He's not going to get enough minutes & is taking up a precious striker spot.

Dzeko is a very short term replacement though

Both Hazard and Ivan will probably go by GW3, but I was originally planning to free up cash for my attack (perhaps to get Bale) by doing Ivan > Collins this/next week.

The question is, is it more important to get a City attacker (Silva) or defender (Zaba)? I'm starting to wonder whether Ivan > Zaba would make more sense than Hazard > Silva.

Silva was gold yesterday. He is pure class player. I am still not convinced if he's good FPL asset though. There are plenty of great midfielder options, even for less than 9M.

I am going for Zab as I have no Citeh now and can't see myself going without for their upcoming games.

In a bit of a pickle for next weeks transfer due to Kos sending off.

    Was set on Lukaku > Lambert/Van Wolf/Dzeko

but now my back lien looking massively dodgy. Currently...

Terry - Clyne (inj?) - Turner - Brayford - Kos (banned)

So, hit required? Or just take out Lukaku?

    Sturridge, Benteke, DZEKO

    OR

Argh. I guess I lean towards B, because Lampard/Dzeko and a 4.5 are three potential duds every week. Although if Lampard and Dzeko get enough minutes A looks significantly better to me.

Can someone please remind me why we're all so desperate to lose Lukaku?

I know that there are other forward options out there and he's a rotation risk but is he really such a bad option for GW2?

Especially as it uses up a valuable FT.

I was just about to post the same thing Sporting. Torres was hardly on fire against Hull and Lukaku looked decent when he came on.

Quite possible that Mourinho was using a home fixture against Hull to try and get Torres's confidence up but Lukaku still his first choice.

I'd be quite happy to play my 5th mid (Jedinak) and have Lukaku as an option for the games afterwards.

    Morning all

so my team I have hazard and Ivan left to play really hoping that someone does something against villa! the likelihood is that I will more than likely lose out CS as teke is going to get at least one past chels 🙁

Have no city cover so I took a big hit last night so far only 49 points 🙁

What would you do with this team?

    Boruc (Davis)
Dawson - Ivan - Mert (Parr - Brayford)
Hazard - Zaha - Snodgrass - Wally (Poz)
    Soldado - RVP - Lambert

    0m in the bank

would like to get some city cover in and also possibly liverpool as well, im open to WC but I did want to leave that till GW3

    Cheers guys

I was looking back through at some of the posts concerning Dzeko and whether to get him in. I'm actually pretty tempted by the move, but there was one thing that confused me, people say a negative of Dzeko is his rotation factor due to Negredo's presence, but surely Aguero is equally as doubtful if not more at risk considering Pellegini's comments?

I don't think so. Negredo/Dzeko are both less versatile, sort of classical number 9s. Aguero can play in support of the striker, all the way forward, or on the wing. He could still get rested, but I think he's a little safer than Dzeko.

I'm surprised there's not a lot of love for Aspas as a replacement for those looking to get rid of Lukaku? Looked good against Stoke and is nailed on for the next 5 weeks with good fixtures. I'm considering it at least until I find out who is guaranteed game time at City and how much Lambert will be affected Osvaldo

What's the opinion on Taarabt now?

He played full 90 minutes, and Martin Jol is a keen admirer, we know. We also know that he's a creative player, and if he keeps on starting and is allowed freedom to roam forward and use his creativity, he can be a bargain at 6.0. Plus, Fulham strikers are going to rotated with the addition of Bent. Heck even Berba's not safe for points now.

More importantly, i like their fixtures too. ARS, new WBA che CAR STO cry sot in the next 8. Only Chelsea away in GW5 that looks really a downside. Any takers?
