City run riot against a sorry Newcastle, with Edin Dzeko the standout protagonist and fit-again Sergio Aguero amongst the scorers. Three of Manuel Pellegrini’s midfielders grab a goal apiece, though City may have issues at the back ahead of the weekend trip to Cardiff. For Alan Pardew, the concerns of last season are far from over:

Pellegrini Praise for Dzeko
He may not have found the net last night but Edin Dzeko produced plenty to demonstrate his new manager’s show of faith. The Bosnian picked up an assist and the Man of the Match award for a display that tormented Newcastle from start to finish – he produced eight efforts on goal and was defied time and again by the heroics of Tim Krul. With a trip to Cardiff and home game against Hull up next for City, his confident showing made a persuasive case for inclusion in our Fantasy squads and looks an in-form solution for those looking to ditch Romelu Lukaku.

Dzeko deservedly earned Pellegrini’s plaudits after the game but with Alvaro Negredo afforded a brief sub appearance and Stevan Jovetic omitted from the squad entirely, there’s still a danger he will be rotated, as his manager once again underlined his plans to utilise the depth of his squad over the campaign:

“I trust Edin Dzeko, it was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances and he played very well. We knew with the ball that he’s a very good player but I think he played very well without the ball tonight. He had some important chances and he deserved to score today. I spoke to him when I first arrived and I told him that he will do very well for us. I am sure we are now going to see the Edin Dzeko that City bought from Wolfsburg two years ago…I’m sure when Jovetic and Negredo come in and play 90 minutes they will do very well too. I’m very happy with the squad we have this season; we will need all of them.”

Options Aplenty for City
The return of Sergio Aguero to the first-team fold was something of a surprise after the Argentine failed to feature over the summer period but he wasted little time in serving a reminder of his attacking capabilities. A goal and assist, with the maximum bonus points also accrued, proved a decent night’s work before he made way on the hour mark, with Pellegrini careful not to over-exert him. With a six-day break until the trip to Cardiff, Aguero looks to be in the driving seat to continue up top – as his 12 point haul against the Magpies showed, he looks a real captaincy contender over those upcoming pair of fixtures.

With goals from midfield trio David Silva, Yaya Toure and substitute Samir Nasri – on for Aguero as Pellegrini switched from 4-2-2-2 to 4-2-3-1 – the arrival of Pellegrini looks to have reinvigorated City’s attacking options after they stuttered to just 66 goals in Roberto Mancini’s final term at the helm. While a more open, expansive style of play will bring Fantasy investors flocking, picking through Pellegrini’s various options from one week to the next could prove tricky – nevertheless, Fantasy managers eyeing up an exit route for Eden Hazard in light of Chelsea’s trip to United and following blank are likely to be swayed by last night’s performance, with Silva looking particularly dangerous in a dazzling display on the left.

Worries at the Back for Pellegrini
City went into last night’s opener without Matija Nastasic, allowing Joleon Lescott the chance to partner Vincent Kompany in the heart of the back-four. While Pellegrini’s side opened their campaign with a clean sheet, they don’t have their problems to seek ahead of Sunday’s trip to Cardiff after the Belgian was subbed off with a groin problem midway through the second period. Kompany will be assessed by the club’s doctors today to ascertain the extent of the problem and in a post-match interview, Pellegrini admitted he is uncertain over the severity:

“We will see what happens with Vincent tomorrow – the doctors will look and then we will find out how many days he may miss. I can’t tell you exactly what happened. It may be a serious injury, it may be nothing – I don’t know.”

Certainly, if the Belgian is forced onto the sidelines, Lescott’s security of starts looks greater right now, though reports have indicated Nastasic is expected to return to training this week and could be in line for a return at Cardiff. With Micah Richards admitting via twitter he is out “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury, Pellegrini could turn to Javi Garcia to partner Lescott if both Kompany and Nastasic fail to recover in time.

Problems Pile Up for Pardew
The Magpies arrived at the Etihad on the back of Arsenal’s bid for Yohan Cabaye, with the Frenchman resultantly left out of the matchday squad. They ended it bottom of the league and devoid of Steven Taylor’s services after the centre-half earned a straight red card for violent conduct. Taylor is now set to miss the next three matches (Gameweeks 2 and 3 and next week’s Capital One Cup clash with Morecambe), with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – filling in for the injured Davide Santon at left-back – likely to move into the middle to partner Fabricio Coloccini. With Jonas Gutierrez subbed off just before the break due to a hamstring issue and Cabaye potentially on his way, Alan Pardew is also facing a real headache in midfield ahead of the weekend – the Magpies have one of the best schedules of any side over the next four (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) but with confidence low on Tyneside, Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to take a punt.

Morning all, really gutted about last night's game. Had £1 on Silva at goal and City 5-0 at 100/1, £1 on Negredo last goal at 9/2 and Silva and Negredo in my team. Robbed of a perfectly good Negredo goal at the end by an incompetent linesman. So frustrating.

I seem to be in the unfortunate situation of owning Lukaku, Cabaye and Zaha. My fault really, lining up a starting team with 2 punts in it.

Looking at Joe Cole - is he nailed on? I assume when Carroll is fit he will just slot in to the main striker role?

    Repost. again. sorry.

What's the opinion on Taarabt now?

He played full 90 minutes, and Martin Jol is a keen admirer, we know. We also know that he's a creative player, and if he keeps on starting and is allowed freedom to roam forward and use his creativity, he can be a bargain at 6.0. Plus, Fulham strikers are going to rotated with the addition of Bent. Heck even Berba's not safe for points now.

More importantly, i like their fixtures too. ARS, new WBA che CAR STO cry sot in the next 8. Only Chelsea away in GW5 that looks really a downside. Any takers?

i was reading the comments on the previous article , as wel as all articles since the first gw started, and see that a lot of people trying to squeeze rvp in after his first gw but also a lot of u that are saying that it was just 1 good gw and he wont score in the tougher matches ahead. Do u really see swansea being that weak a side?

For me it was a very impressing match, swansea looked amazing in the second half and were unlucky not to score more. Bony is a beast in the final third and also, what the hell happened to shelvey in the last 3 months? I swear i never saw him play like that at liverpool. Vision, nice passes, good dribbles and an overall solid game from him in my opinion.

As for van persie, i really dont think he will have to struggle much to fine the net vs chelsea and liverpool, or city for that matter. I admit i struggled a lot with myself before putting him in, and i wouldnt have if i wasnt such a fanboy. But i always thought the world of rvp and i think the sooner u guys get him i the better.

I realise my team wasnt too good since i will probably get about 50-60 points but that wasnt due to poor team becuasse rvp is expensive, its poor judgement from me picking clyne over shaw and olsson over coleman ( got them both in one night before the gw), not to mention rat not playing denying me a clean sheet. so i would be 70+ if i just didnt change my mind about those 2. Not bad for a team with rvp in it .

But they won't have tickets if they are sold out online? Im going to Manchester, don't want to waste the whole day going to Birmingham if i don't get tickets anyway 😀

May just go to Liverpool and watch Mirallas thrash wba.

What did you all make of Silva yesterday? Back to his 11/12 point-scoring performances? I'm thinking of using my FT on Lampard -> Silva and then holding Lukaku for the Utd - Che game because I'm still not sure on who I want to be his replacement yet. Whereas with replacing Lampard it's just a choice between Silva/Coutinho/Michu

Getting rid of Lamps at all would be a shocker. Especially for Silva.

In footballing terms he looked excellent, but as a Silva owner I'm slightly anxious about him playing quite wide/"assisting the assister". I will definitely hold for City's upcoming run though.

Negredo looked scary good, unbelievable reactions and placement, I was nervous when the ball was coming his way. Reckon he'll oust Dzeko by November

Dzeko works harder than Negredo, so I still see edin being the main man

So I wildcarded last night leaving me with:

    Mignolet | Rudd
    Zabaleta | Coleman | Shaw | Ward | B.Turner
    Silva | Walcott | Coutinho | Mirallas | Barkley
    Benteke | Bony | Dzeko

The next 3 GW's are really nice for Man City which is why I have trippled up.

After GW3 Silva will most likley become one of Hazard/Mata.

After GW4 Dzeko & Zabaleta will become Sturridge & Chelsea defender.

I do however fancy keeping one of these, most likley Zabaleta so may try fit him in alongside a Chelsea defender

What a stupid comment, the games bigger the RVP you know.

Won't be getting RVP at all this season.

i can't believe that is your forward line after a WC - no RVP (fair enough you don't want him) but no soldado, studge, aguero - what will you doe if suarez comes good, you'll need to spend a few FTs. need a larger priced forward IMO to keep options open. IMO its too early for WC, theres only been one game, don't want to chase last weeks points....

Benteke will score against anyone, Dzeko has good fixture to score in the next 3 then Sturridge will come in who again can score against any teams.

Then Bony I personally think he's going to get a lot of goals this season. Very happy with it myself.

Also not chasing points, already had Coleman Mignolet & Benteke just saw some good fixtures for Chelsea & Southampton coming up and see it as an ideal time to try take advantage of these.

Scout Suggestion - long post incoming!

Tl;dr - have player names as smilies that can be tagged in posts!

As part of the comments, possibly for members only?, allow posters to 'tag' players in their posts, either directly within the post (like some sort of smiley system where names are inserted from drop down) or as hidden metadata/underneath the post in smaller/less visible font, again chosen from a list.

Benefits/Possibilities of this as I see it

    1) 'sort comments by: player/team' to help repeat questions on X/Y player

    2) allow members to see stats on who is most talked about, could work into the RMT functionality somehow?

    3) standardising player names in posts, one of the bigger issues for me as a semi-regular is the abbreviations and nicknames for players.

    4) would allow abbreviations to be used in the post, while providing detail for non members and members alike- non members may hover over/click where it says RvW and see the full name, for members clicking on it would take to members area page on van winkle.

I'm sure there are many other useful things that could be done with a system like this.

Just my two pence. Comments welcome!!

Lukaku needs 20k transfers out to drop. Check again tonight but you should be fine to wait. If he gets a brace tomorrow he'll start getting transfers in, lots of them.

    Defenders BPS Stats:

I created a custom stats table in the members area, that shows the key factors positively influencing defenders scores in the new BPS. It only considers those with >30 passes and more than 70% pass completion.

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/3399/

Have a look and let me know what you think.

So Dzeko has a stomer - 4 points.
Aguero does little and is taken off after an hour - 12 points.

He had 8 shots, 7 of them in the box and he didn't score. That doesn't even include the great chance where he fell over!

I know, that's what is even more annoying! But things like the 'assist' for the first and a potential one on the disallowed goal (I think, anyway) could have been better for him.

I need to downgrade Ivanovic by the end of the week. I decided to let the Coleman bandwagon go, I just felt it was not the way to go.

So I now have in mind:
Lescott, who will get me some clean sheets
    or
Shaw, who is much cheaper and has a bigger attacking potential
