City run riot against a sorry Newcastle, with Edin Dzeko the standout protagonist and fit-again Sergio Aguero amongst the scorers. Three of Manuel Pellegrini’s midfielders grab a goal apiece, though City may have issues at the back ahead of the weekend trip to Cardiff. For Alan Pardew, the concerns of last season are far from over:

Pellegrini Praise for Dzeko
He may not have found the net last night but Edin Dzeko produced plenty to demonstrate his new manager’s show of faith. The Bosnian picked up an assist and the Man of the Match award for a display that tormented Newcastle from start to finish – he produced eight efforts on goal and was defied time and again by the heroics of Tim Krul. With a trip to Cardiff and home game against Hull up next for City, his confident showing made a persuasive case for inclusion in our Fantasy squads and looks an in-form solution for those looking to ditch Romelu Lukaku.

Dzeko deservedly earned Pellegrini’s plaudits after the game but with Alvaro Negredo afforded a brief sub appearance and Stevan Jovetic omitted from the squad entirely, there’s still a danger he will be rotated, as his manager once again underlined his plans to utilise the depth of his squad over the campaign:

“I trust Edin Dzeko, it was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances and he played very well. We knew with the ball that he’s a very good player but I think he played very well without the ball tonight. He had some important chances and he deserved to score today. I spoke to him when I first arrived and I told him that he will do very well for us. I am sure we are now going to see the Edin Dzeko that City bought from Wolfsburg two years ago…I’m sure when Jovetic and Negredo come in and play 90 minutes they will do very well too. I’m very happy with the squad we have this season; we will need all of them.”

Options Aplenty for City
The return of Sergio Aguero to the first-team fold was something of a surprise after the Argentine failed to feature over the summer period but he wasted little time in serving a reminder of his attacking capabilities. A goal and assist, with the maximum bonus points also accrued, proved a decent night’s work before he made way on the hour mark, with Pellegrini careful not to over-exert him. With a six-day break until the trip to Cardiff, Aguero looks to be in the driving seat to continue up top – as his 12 point haul against the Magpies showed, he looks a real captaincy contender over those upcoming pair of fixtures.

With goals from midfield trio David Silva, Yaya Toure and substitute Samir Nasri – on for Aguero as Pellegrini switched from 4-2-2-2 to 4-2-3-1 – the arrival of Pellegrini looks to have reinvigorated City’s attacking options after they stuttered to just 66 goals in Roberto Mancini’s final term at the helm. While a more open, expansive style of play will bring Fantasy investors flocking, picking through Pellegrini’s various options from one week to the next could prove tricky – nevertheless, Fantasy managers eyeing up an exit route for Eden Hazard in light of Chelsea’s trip to United and following blank are likely to be swayed by last night’s performance, with Silva looking particularly dangerous in a dazzling display on the left.

Worries at the Back for Pellegrini
City went into last night’s opener without Matija Nastasic, allowing Joleon Lescott the chance to partner Vincent Kompany in the heart of the back-four. While Pellegrini’s side opened their campaign with a clean sheet, they don’t have their problems to seek ahead of Sunday’s trip to Cardiff after the Belgian was subbed off with a groin problem midway through the second period. Kompany will be assessed by the club’s doctors today to ascertain the extent of the problem and in a post-match interview, Pellegrini admitted he is uncertain over the severity:

“We will see what happens with Vincent tomorrow – the doctors will look and then we will find out how many days he may miss. I can’t tell you exactly what happened. It may be a serious injury, it may be nothing – I don’t know.”

Certainly, if the Belgian is forced onto the sidelines, Lescott’s security of starts looks greater right now, though reports have indicated Nastasic is expected to return to training this week and could be in line for a return at Cardiff. With Micah Richards admitting via twitter he is out “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury, Pellegrini could turn to Javi Garcia to partner Lescott if both Kompany and Nastasic fail to recover in time.

Problems Pile Up for Pardew
The Magpies arrived at the Etihad on the back of Arsenal’s bid for Yohan Cabaye, with the Frenchman resultantly left out of the matchday squad. They ended it bottom of the league and devoid of Steven Taylor’s services after the centre-half earned a straight red card for violent conduct. Taylor is now set to miss the next three matches (Gameweeks 2 and 3 and next week’s Capital One Cup clash with Morecambe), with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – filling in for the injured Davide Santon at left-back – likely to move into the middle to partner Fabricio Coloccini. With Jonas Gutierrez subbed off just before the break due to a hamstring issue and Cabaye potentially on his way, Alan Pardew is also facing a real headache in midfield ahead of the weekend – the Magpies have one of the best schedules of any side over the next four (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) but with confidence low on Tyneside, Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to take a punt.

If you were Arsene Wenger, today you would buy...

Here is a piece I would like you fantasy managers to actually be manager for a moment and declare your moves! Maybe they should just buy 'arry, he'll spend the money for them 😆

    - Willian (be the gazumper for a change and come over the top of your silly neighbours)
    - Ashley Williams (i've seen this guy nose-to-nose with players before. Need a hard man)
    - Fellaini (height, size, power. Back to the Patrick Vieira/Petit days. Cabaye is so "meh". You have a number of cabayes already - Jack, Ramsey, Arteta...)
    - Dzeko (not sure whether it's for price or man management from Pellegrini, but the man is surplus to requirements. Make them an offer they'd be silly to refuse).
    - Casillas (new manager and same old story... on the pine. I'm sure he'd much rather be playing a Champions League qualifier).

Willian- bit expensive in an area we have a lot of players anyway. Additions are always helpful, but we need to priorities the lighter areas.
Williams- seems a no brainer. Give them what they want. I think a Williams-Koscielny partnership would be awesome.
Fellaini- would be decent, but I think he is overpriced. He is good on the ball, but I don't think good enough for Arsenal. Marti an an alternative?
Dzeko- we have no chance of getting him. He would be amazing to get though. I always liked him as a goalscorer, but his link up play last night was exceptional.
Casillas- too big a name for us I think. He would be an amazing addition, but I just cant see him taking that step down, let alone Ancelotti selling a club legend in his first season. I think Cesar would be the obvious choice. Begovic if you're willing to spend a bit of money. I think Wenger is oblivious to the goalkeeping situation that we have suffered for half a decade.

i didn't realise he got that much criticism tbh... thought it was just me that thought he was a clumsy goof. he's a pelican. looks like he could trip over his own feet at any time. Is a poor man's dzeko. point man yes... touch = average, turn = non-existant, speed = none

I don't know about 'awful', but neither of them are RVP/Suarez/Aguero calibre and that's what Arsenal need (among other things) if they want to go from challenging for top 4 to challenging for the title.

Shaw 12mill - From last season he has shown he is going to be top class.

Fellaini 20mill - Don't rate him myself, but could do a job.

Benteke 27mill -Yes I know he's signed a contract, but he will get 20 goals a season anywhere.

and would forgive Vermaelen too. Remember his first season. As a fellow centre-half, I was in awe of watching him play. One of them centre backs that can do things most can't. Like Rio back in the day

I don't think Verm can be forgiven, he makes too many mistakes for me, and positionally he is poor. Arsenal look more solid without him, Villa result was partly down to lack of protection from midfield imo.

Mourinho has made it clear that he's after another striker, possibly Rooney, so he wouldn't spend 40 million on a player he's not going to play. It's a long season and maybe with a few injuries in the squad Lukaku could nail down a starting role, but I just don't see it happening yet. The lad is only 20.

    Defenders BPS Stats:
I created two stats tables in the members area, that shows the key factors positively/negatively influencing defenders scores in the new BPS.
The positive table only considers those with >30 passes and more than 70% pass completion.
Negative table only considers those with at least 1 conceded foul.

Because 'cover' is meaningless. There are midfielders at 9.0 or less who will score more points and that's all that matters.

The new baps system is heavily weighted towards CS-keeping defenders and goalscorers (forwards more so than mids), and Silva and Navas just aren't prolific enough to benefit from it.

Had too many players I was not happy with or were not involved. So I bit the bullet and used my wildcard. Anyways with free choice of any players it has gave me great confidence to move forward. I had Coleman/Mirallas/Dzeko/Sturridge/Coutinho/Collins from the start so 9 changes in all.

    ............................Hart/Davis............................

    Collins/Shaw...........Coleman.............Clyne/Reid

    Mirallas......Silva.......Coutinho......Barkley/Jedinak

    .........Dzeko.............RVP...............Sturridge.......

Going to go with Hart every game so not bothered that Davis will not play.
Will play 2 x West Ham defenders when they play at home and rotate with 2 x Saints defenders.
I know there is a risk doubling up like this but I am happy to do this.
Coleman is staying in there for now especially as they play west Brom at home this week but have 1 million in the bank and plan to upgrade him.
I am sticking with Coutinho and Mirallas and Silva should score big in the next two game weeks.
Barkley and Jedinak will rotate in my 4 man midfield for as long as Barkley is still in the first team.
Dzeko will hopefully stay first choice and be hitting the net in the next two GW's and Sturridge and Van Persie will always get me goals.

    Any comments please?

Having watched the Liverpool game I am not happy to part with my cash on any of the Liverpool back line. One of the worst teams in the EPL could have got three goals at Anfield. I'd rather go elsewhere. Plus surely Hart is nailed on for two shut outs in the next two game weeks 😉

I wouldn't knee-jerk this one. surely Negredo/Aguero is the main strikeforce?

I would think he got a break after south america trip and potentially start next time out. If he starts the time after that as well, you have a first choice City striker in your squad. wait and see

Out of interest, what are people's opinions of the international break wildcard money making strategy? If you did it last year do you feel it was a major benefit?

I went for the second international break last year and suffered from smaller price rises as a lot of driftwood teams are knocking around by then. Always feel there is a lot of security in keeping it free for postponements/DGWs etc. but then I guess you miss early bandwagons.

You wc at the start of the break and bring in everyone who rises, before they rise obviously. Then if anyone rises by 0.2 you can sell them in the same window for a 0.1 profit. So you are free to bring in people you don't want as long as they rise in price, then at the end of the period change to your real team.

With the way price changes work you can, in a very select number of cases, game the system and get some extra money.

Say... Zaha has an absolute blinder against Liverpool in GW3 and then also has a nice run of fixtures coming up along with being 90% of the way to a price rise already. If you're wildcarding over GW3 you can immediately get him to your team and get the first price rise. Since people are bandwagoning on him massively he goes up AGAIN during the international break, +0.2 since you bought him. Then the Friday before the next gameweek he does his hamstring in training and is out for months, since you're wildcarding you can get rid of him, get a 0.1 profit on him due to the price rises, and then get in another player you do want.

I've done it both of the last two years. The year before last it went well and I made a good amount of money, last year not so much. So I suppose it's fairly hit and miss. If your team are doing well you may get a good number of the price rises that week anyway from your current squad. I'd say only do it if there is more than one reason (i.e. to make money + you can't put out 11 etc. - rather than to simply make money). Myself I've opted for the immediate wildcard week 1 this year; had a team based solely on GW1 point scoring with a longer term team forming over this week before GW2. Not that that has gone entirely to plan either!

ivan to shaw or collins & lukaku to sturridge for a hit (which will free up 1m & i'll have a forward nailed on assuming he stays injury free)

Newcastle were a mess last night, but surely the only way is up performance wise. That coupled with easy fixtures and a potential Cabaye departure (thus most likely giving HBA complete freedom to be the creative force) sways me towards a HBA punt. He is only 7m, and out of any Newcastle player did have a few moments last night - against anyone other than Kompany he may have carved out something.

Dzeko or Bony for Lukaku? I've been of the opinion that Dzeko is too much of a rotation risk, but I'm struggling to see many alternatives with nothing in the bank. I will possibly downgrade Ivan or Hazard at some point to allow me to get Sturridge, but for the next few weeks it looks like it's one of these 2.

      442. Not sure if that will change when Alcaraz is fit though

A version of 4231 / 433, but the full backs were playing like inside forwards.

I can't decide what to do.

    Can go Ivanovic - shaw
Ivanovic - Zaba but already have clichy.
    Ivanovic + Anelka - Shaw + Dzeko
    Hazard + Gabby - Koren + Aguero

Any advice? Tough decisions ahead about this city team.

      Ivanovic + Anelka - Shaw + Dzeko

This is the exact transfer i'm craving to do, but its a -4 hit and I want to give anelka more of a chance, also Ivanovic could very well keep a clean sheet against utd

Yeah I don't think Everton will be particularly good defensively given Martinez style of play so not to worried about Anelka being away to them. I I could always spread my two transfers out and hope for no price rises.

Almost forgot, could do Hazard + Gabby for Coutiniho + Dzeko. Have Oscar as well.
