City run riot against a sorry Newcastle, with Edin Dzeko the standout protagonist and fit-again Sergio Aguero amongst the scorers. Three of Manuel Pellegrini’s midfielders grab a goal apiece, though City may have issues at the back ahead of the weekend trip to Cardiff. For Alan Pardew, the concerns of last season are far from over:

Pellegrini Praise for Dzeko
He may not have found the net last night but Edin Dzeko produced plenty to demonstrate his new manager’s show of faith. The Bosnian picked up an assist and the Man of the Match award for a display that tormented Newcastle from start to finish – he produced eight efforts on goal and was defied time and again by the heroics of Tim Krul. With a trip to Cardiff and home game against Hull up next for City, his confident showing made a persuasive case for inclusion in our Fantasy squads and looks an in-form solution for those looking to ditch Romelu Lukaku.

Dzeko deservedly earned Pellegrini’s plaudits after the game but with Alvaro Negredo afforded a brief sub appearance and Stevan Jovetic omitted from the squad entirely, there’s still a danger he will be rotated, as his manager once again underlined his plans to utilise the depth of his squad over the campaign:

“I trust Edin Dzeko, it was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances and he played very well. We knew with the ball that he’s a very good player but I think he played very well without the ball tonight. He had some important chances and he deserved to score today. I spoke to him when I first arrived and I told him that he will do very well for us. I am sure we are now going to see the Edin Dzeko that City bought from Wolfsburg two years ago…I’m sure when Jovetic and Negredo come in and play 90 minutes they will do very well too. I’m very happy with the squad we have this season; we will need all of them.”

Options Aplenty for City
The return of Sergio Aguero to the first-team fold was something of a surprise after the Argentine failed to feature over the summer period but he wasted little time in serving a reminder of his attacking capabilities. A goal and assist, with the maximum bonus points also accrued, proved a decent night’s work before he made way on the hour mark, with Pellegrini careful not to over-exert him. With a six-day break until the trip to Cardiff, Aguero looks to be in the driving seat to continue up top – as his 12 point haul against the Magpies showed, he looks a real captaincy contender over those upcoming pair of fixtures.

With goals from midfield trio David Silva, Yaya Toure and substitute Samir Nasri – on for Aguero as Pellegrini switched from 4-2-2-2 to 4-2-3-1 – the arrival of Pellegrini looks to have reinvigorated City’s attacking options after they stuttered to just 66 goals in Roberto Mancini’s final term at the helm. While a more open, expansive style of play will bring Fantasy investors flocking, picking through Pellegrini’s various options from one week to the next could prove tricky – nevertheless, Fantasy managers eyeing up an exit route for Eden Hazard in light of Chelsea’s trip to United and following blank are likely to be swayed by last night’s performance, with Silva looking particularly dangerous in a dazzling display on the left.

Worries at the Back for Pellegrini
City went into last night’s opener without Matija Nastasic, allowing Joleon Lescott the chance to partner Vincent Kompany in the heart of the back-four. While Pellegrini’s side opened their campaign with a clean sheet, they don’t have their problems to seek ahead of Sunday’s trip to Cardiff after the Belgian was subbed off with a groin problem midway through the second period. Kompany will be assessed by the club’s doctors today to ascertain the extent of the problem and in a post-match interview, Pellegrini admitted he is uncertain over the severity:

“We will see what happens with Vincent tomorrow – the doctors will look and then we will find out how many days he may miss. I can’t tell you exactly what happened. It may be a serious injury, it may be nothing – I don’t know.”

Certainly, if the Belgian is forced onto the sidelines, Lescott’s security of starts looks greater right now, though reports have indicated Nastasic is expected to return to training this week and could be in line for a return at Cardiff. With Micah Richards admitting via twitter he is out “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury, Pellegrini could turn to Javi Garcia to partner Lescott if both Kompany and Nastasic fail to recover in time.

Problems Pile Up for Pardew
The Magpies arrived at the Etihad on the back of Arsenal’s bid for Yohan Cabaye, with the Frenchman resultantly left out of the matchday squad. They ended it bottom of the league and devoid of Steven Taylor’s services after the centre-half earned a straight red card for violent conduct. Taylor is now set to miss the next three matches (Gameweeks 2 and 3 and next week’s Capital One Cup clash with Morecambe), with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – filling in for the injured Davide Santon at left-back – likely to move into the middle to partner Fabricio Coloccini. With Jonas Gutierrez subbed off just before the break due to a hamstring issue and Cabaye potentially on his way, Alan Pardew is also facing a real headache in midfield ahead of the weekend – the Magpies have one of the best schedules of any side over the next four (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) but with confidence low on Tyneside, Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to take a punt.

What's the verdict on J Cole? Did he seem to play ok? His values for threat here on the scout seems to suggest he's potentially a real bargain.

Thinking of bringing him in to make room for rvp, who started a little better than I had hoped...

    From the guardian:
"With Vincent Kompany out for maybe two weeks or longer, according to Manuel Pellegrini, because of the groin injury he suffered in Manchester City's 4-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday evening, this should concentrate minds even more on the recruitment of a central defender. As Matija Nastasic's availibility for Sunday's trip to Cardiff City in the balance as he recovers from an ankle problem and Micah Richards out for "weeks" due to a pulled hamstring, the manager may have only Joleon Lescott fit as a recognised first-team operator in the position, with the fringe player Dedryck Boyata also offering a choice. Real Madrid's Pepe is the player City continue to pursue with Martin Demichelis of Atlético Madrid also on his radar. Pellegrini's emergency options run to Javi Garcia and Gareth Barry."

Could Chelsea defender ---> Lescott be a move worth doing now folks?

Yeah Lescott could be a decent option short term but I'd be surprised if they don't strengthen at CB now so he could find himself out of the team in a few weeks.

Quite a few good options at 4.5-5m too and I think many will be saving £ for RVP GW4, if they don't already have him.

Definitely. Javi Garcia will play in Kompany's absence, but when Nastasic is back, I don't know whether Pele would play 2 left footers. So Lescott could be short term until Nasty comes back.

If Kompany and Nasty are only missing a week or two then Lescott is a very short term move. Kompany out doesn't help their CS prospects either, though the immediate opposition are weak.

Right, been doing a little analysis between team sheet predictions from the scout and the Guardian Squad Sheets. Since, if I remember correctly, Guardian don't do team sheets for mid week oddities like the one upcoming I'll call this gameweek "complete". While some of the inaccuracies from both sites were mooted in their own blurbs about the match I had to draw the line somewhere. I may look at continuing this to see if there are any trends with certain sites being more accurate about certain teams or favouring a certain player, along with just who is more accurate over the season.

Therefore, for Gameweek 1 I present the results!

Of the 220 starting players Guardian correctly predicted 190 of them. They also scored a perfect XI with their expected Sunderland team sheet. FFS weren't far behind, naming 188 / 220 correctly, unfortunately they do get the award of worst team sheet, only naming 7/11 correctly for the Norwich XI, however they redeemed themselves with the only other perfect XI of the weekend by correctly predicting the Spurs line up.

Here's where it all went wrong..

    Both got wrong:

    ARS - Cazorla > Chamberlain
    CHE - Lukaku > Torres
    CPL - Chamakh > Dikgracoi
    CPL - Grandin > Wilbraham
    CAR - Smith > Gunnarsson
    EVE - Gibson > Barkley
    FUL - Amore > Hughes
    FUL - Ruiz > Kasami
    LIV - Allen > Henderson
    NEW - Cabaye > Gouffran
    NOR - R. Bennett > Whittaker
    NOR - Snodgrass > Redmond
    STO - Adam > Palacios
    SWA - Bony > Canas

    Guardian also failed on:

    ARS - Podolski > Rosicky
    AVL - Okore > Baker
CHE - Schurrle > De Bruyne
    CHE - Essien > Ramires
    HUL - Livermore > Koren
    MCY - Garcia > Aguero
    MUN - Kagawa > Cleverly
    NOR - Hooper > Hoolahan
    SOT - Clyne > Chambers
    SOT - Cork > Rodriguez
    SOT - Puncheon > Ward-Prowse
    SWA - Ki > Shelvey
    TOT - Kaboul > Vertongen
    WBA - Reid > Jones
    WBA - Rosenberg > Brunt
    WHM - Rat > O'Brien

    Meanwhile FFS incorrectly guessed:

AVL - Tonev > El Ahmadi
    CPL - Williams > Dobbie
    FUL - Kacaniklic > Taarabt
    HUL - Huddlestone > Mayler
    HUL - Livermore > Sagbo
    MCY - Negredo > Aguero
    MUN - Zaha > Valencia
    NEW - Santon > S Taylor
    NOR - Tettey > Howson
    NOR - Olsson > E. Bennett
    SOT - Do Prado > Ward-Prowse
    SOT - Fonte > Hooiveld
    SUN - Cuellar > Valentin
    SWA - Hernandez > Dyer
    WBA - Dorrans > Brunt
    WHM - Rat > Demel
    WHM - Morrison > Diame

Make of it all what you will!

I think the best thing to do is track it first few weeks to have confidence levels when looking at the only team sheets of any worth we have in future weeks.

Be nice MVTaylor if you can come up with some sort of formula of running confidence level for particular teams, positions or just overall.

At the moment, confidence for Guardian is 86.3% vs 85.5% for FFS.

Be interesting to see if that margin opens up. Also interesting to see if for example Sunderland's confidence can remain 100% There may be some teams that Guardian is better at (due to supporters at the paper, or contacts) and other teams, where FFS are solid (i.e. non rotating teams).

Looks like everyone is going for a hit this -4.
Was thinking abt saving my transfer to make the switch easier in GW3 bt after yesterday's match I m really worried.
More of a worry is I can't afford Aguerro & Dzeko is the only choice...Not nailed on...can expose my team for GW3.

Can anyone play the piano? This should be sung to the tune of The Elements.

    The Premier League

    There's Coutinho, Paulinho, City’s Fernandinho
Wenger, Moyes and AVB, Rodgers and Mourinho
Small Shane Long and Big Frimpong, Sessegnon and Seb Bassong
Hazard, Mata and Van Ginkel, Hooper for Van Wolfswinkel
Kyle Walker, Stephen Caulker, Dwight Gayle, Gareth Bale
Berbatov and Senderos, and Wanyama, Bigirimana
Given, Bannan, Distin, Coleman, Colback, Welbeck, Westwood, Holman
    *gasp*
Cornelius. Helenius. Ron Vlaar. John Parr

There’s Nic Anelka, Jagielka, Amorebieta, Azpilicueta
United, Stoke, and Hull and Swansea, Walters, Adam and Nzonzi
Wes Hoolahan’s a little titch, Di Canio’s a stroppy bitch
Jelavic and Nastasic, and Suarez bit Ivanovic

There’s Nemanja Vidic, Kacaniklic, Bryan Ruiz, David Luiz,
Shearer, Lawro, Stelling, Souness, Fulham’s Giorgos Karagounis
Rodallega, Stephen Taylor, Coloccini and Borini
Speroni, Bony, Mignolet, Tavernier and John O’Shea
Off the bench Adel Taarabt, on the bench it’s Razvan Rat
Conway, Kone, Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas, Papiss Cisse
Johnson, Dudgeon, Dawson, Lowton, Lennon, Larsson, Garvan, Howson
    *bite*
And Garrido and Fabio and Becchio and Soldado.

Currently got Giroud. Hope Cazorla gets the night off as he was knackered. A fit Cazorla with Walcott on the other side could be good for scoring goals. Fulham knows they're weakened at the back and should be looking to go for it at home.

If you had 5 in the bank, and could upgrade either J.Rodriguez or Lukaku, what would be your move?

I am currently thinking of Lukaku -> Dzeko, followed by J.Rodriguez->RVP in gw4. If I get Aguero now, there is no way I can afford RVP in gw4.

But I also can't get around the fact that Dzeko will definitely be rotated unexpectedly. It isn't something that is to my liking.

Pratik, I think you're right to be worried RE: Citeh strikers. I'm avoiding, it could end up being and endless transfer-fest chasing last week's best scorer. If RvP is the plan GW4, do something that plays to that strategy.

        Name your 15.

It sounds like you'll make 11 for GW2 wihout a transfer.

Koscielny will be back in GW3 so you'd even have 10 outfield players and a keeper then without transfers but as Lukaku ain't nailed-on yet and City might have a handy fixture you could get Dzeko. Still have 2 FT for GW4 after International break.
